World of Tanks Named Best MMO at Golden Joystick Awards

Skyrim wins big as the awards set a new record for voter participation.

As the longest-running annual gaming awards series - and the oldest gaming honors voted on by the general public - the Golden Joystick Awards have a long and storied history. This year marks the event's 30th anniversary, and the winners include... well... pretty much the games you'd expect to win. With more than 4 million votes tallied, which doubles last year's record, it's hard to argue with these results.

Some of the more interesting honorees include Minecraft for Game Most Similar to Cocaine Addiction and Slender for Game Most Likely to Make You Change Your Pants. Ok, I made those up. Check out the full list of the real winners below.

Ultimate Game of the Year: Skyrim
Best Action Game: Batman: Arkham City
Best Strategy Game: Civilization V: Gods and Kings
Best Tablet Game: Angry Birds Space
Best Downloadable Game: Minecraft XBLA
Best Fighting Game: Mortal Kombat
Best Shooter: Battlefield 3
Best MMO: World of Tanks
Best Handheld Game: Uncharted: Golden Abyss
Best DLC: Portal 2
Best Sports Game: FIFA 12
Best Racing Game: Forza 4
Best Browser Game: Slender
The One to Watch: Grand Theft Auto V
Top Gaming Moment: Visiting Skyrim's Throat of the World

For a bit of perspective on just how far we've come in the past 30 years, take a look at the image above. On the bottom is the very first Golden Joystick Game of the Year winner, Jetpac for the ZX Spectrum and VIC-20 home computers, and on the top is Skyrim, this year's overall top dog.

I see that Mass Effect 3 made it to the list /troll

Wooo, go World of Tanks! Looking forward to my next fight in it!

Also more proof I need to get Skyrim.

WoT is the best MMO according to this thing. Ehh dodgey, it's a good game (I play it) but I feel there would be something better than it. Swtor perhaps.

I did know they did not take into consideration GW2, I much assume because it came out mid-year. So next year it should be included.

I hope people will read this and not rage that GW2 isn't on the list.

What about Diablo 3 as Game Most Likely to Make You Ask for your Money Back.

I don't play tank games, but ChaosD1 made World of Tanks sound good.

I'm disappointed. You didn't mentioned the Stephen Fry robot.

And that Spec Ops: The Line didn't win best shooter.

And that the FIFA series/EA won an award for "Oustanding Contribution to Gaming"

Minecraft is a few years old. I don't think it is fair that it should be included just because it was released on the 360.

Maybe i'm just a bit sore that Dust got no mention.

I was highly disappointed with skyrim personally. I wouldn't put it on the top 10 list of my favorite releases if I made a list.

It didn't win cause most of the awards are voted for by the public so really its just a miracle that it didn't go to MW3

Yeah, I knew the reason for it. =P Still disappointed though D=

Yeah so am I, it should take the best shooter award for every year for the rest of time in my opinion.

Visiting Skyrim's Throat of the World was...dull. Top gaming moment my arse...or maybe I'm just spoiled.

Wait...

Isn't World of Tanks a lobby-based arena game?

Is 30 players now considered massive?

In WOW unless you're considerably lucky or in a dedicated PVP zone you're playing with what, the five people you're grouped with most of the time while talking to whoever else is around (Usually 10 or so people unless you're in a city).

I'd saw WOT is roughly the same thing

I still have my VIC-20, still prefer Jetpac to most things that made it onto that list, and still want you all to get off my lawn.

Whatever, we get extra swag in WoT for a while now as it won. Yay and stuff.

Andy Shandy:

Well in fairness I think it should win GOTY or best story, but there's no best story which is balls. It doesn't help our image if we miss certain category's like this.

The game itself may be deserving, but the company behind certainly is not X3. I've been in that game since the closed BETA, and I cannot remember even a fraction of all the crap Wargaming.net has tried to pull on it's playerbase. I finally decided I'm done with the game a few months ago... Things such as selling us EXCLUSIVE ONETIME ONLY PRE-ORDER VEHICLES, only to have them show up in the real-money store half a year later... That's the kinda shit that costs you a dedicated players trust!

On top of that, the game just gets boring and kinda fustrating in the long run. I can't enjoy myself in it anymore, so I'm much happier playing Planetside 2 now ^^.

You're nonetheless in a persistent world with thousands of other players.

Every time you visit a market hub there will be hundreds of players there.

No clue how WoW is doing these days but used to be that there'd be occasional world PvP involving 100+ players easily.

And WoW is by all means a light and more casual MMO.

Take EvE online with battles featuring over 3000 players at times, that's a much more serious MMO.

If WoT is a MMO then so is battlefield. So is Call of Duty. So is any game featuring more than a dozen simultaneous players. Which makes the MMO tag utterly meaningless.

thw category tends to change alot.. before mmo its been multiplayer game of the year, online game of the year, this year they are calling it MMO of the year.

wow won it last year but im not suprised WOT won.. 20 million users and the russian server has 450,000 players live most of the time. so yeah it does fit the massive description

If you're going to get pedantic: you're currently in a persistent world with billions of other players, most of whom aren't even playing the same game as you at the same time. Any game you or anyone else happen to be playing at any given time should be classified as "best MMO", since "billions" blows "thousands" completely out of the water.

...for that matter, if you're going purely by concurrent players, or even active subscriptions, have a look at Farmville's numbers: roughly half a billion (that's right, billion, with a B) concurrent players, EACH playing for over 8 hours a day, every day. Clearly, the numbers say Farmville is for the hardest of the hardcore gamers, and EVE is a simple casual game.

Except you know... real life is not a game... obviously...

And you don't know what a shared persistent world is do you?

Hint: Farmville does not have one.

Ultimate Game of the Year: Skyrim
well, i can see that coming
Best Action Game: Batman: Arkham City
people liked it so i guess thats fair.
Best Strategy Game: Civilization V: Gods and Kings
nice to see civilization get the recognition, just hope paradox would have been here, they definitely deserved it.
Best Downloadable Game: Minecraft XBLA
arent all games downloadable nowadays? or does that mean free download? but minecraft isnt free.
Best Shooter: Battlefield 3
well, at least its not COD
Best MMO: World of Tanks
This came unexpected. As a World of tank gamer i am pleased, but it being the best MMO? was MMO this year so shitty? i mean i like it and all but its far from perfect.
Best DLC: Portal 2
DLC gets thier own category. I am sad now.
The One to Watch: Grand Theft Auto V
Because in gta 5 all you can do is watch.

well MMO stands for "Massive Multiplayer Online" and you cant deny that World of Tanks, game that is dedicated for online gamining only and has a massive userbase is massive, multiplayer and online. What makes it different from COD or BF sries is that those are server-based where single server holds up to what 64 players? WOT runs 100.000 players on one server with persistent overwhelming experience system (im nto sure if its global or server-based for COD now, when i palyed it it was you had to start over for each server).
But yes, MMO tag is pretty meaningless nowadays.

I don't play tank games, but ChaosD1 made World of Tanks sound good.

Darqueling's videos on YouTube are good if you want to get a good feel for the game at most tiers. You might also what to try BohemianEagle and Highflyer15 ("The Riising Sun" - with double 'i'), but they're probably more use to people playing already. Hope that helps.

To throw in my hat on the whole "World Of Tanks" thing, I think they key is that they are using "Massively Multiplayer Online Game" as opposed to "Persistant World Game". By their terminology, most online games would count, including Farmville. If they limited things to persistant world games, you might run into a problem given that the same, enduring, games would probably win year after year. Not to mention that fewer, and fewer, companies are really working on developing those kind of games, aiming at the much cheaper to develop "arena" type games that tend to work much better with a microtransaction "pay to win" type model.

That's my thoughts at any rate.

In the future they should probably make "MMO" a catagory and further seperate it into sub catagories. I think that "World Of Tanks" should be rated exclusively against other arena-based games like DOTA (2), LoL, and others. Persistant World games should have their own catagory, as should browser based strategy/social click fests like say "Godfather: Five Families" and "Farmville", as those games share a general "wait long enough, then queue something to happen and wait again" type mechanic which may or may not include a competitive metagame (though for the most part it's generally pointless).

Odd I wouldn't even call it MMO, it's more like advanced multiplayer... but alright.
And considering they have some pay to win aspects (only money buys top items) I would mark them down on that front, but it is without a doubt the best multiplayer tank battle game out there at the moment.

If World of Tanks got rid of its absurd grinding and tested its maps a bit more, it would probably be game of the year. The gameplay itself is fun and unique, and with the exception of some balance issues and lame artillery mechanics, one of the best you'll find in the multiplayer shooter genre. But I'm never going to play it again. The grinding was just such a monumental effort and really really burns you out.

Source: I played around 6000 games and got to most of the Tier 9 heavies and TDs.

well they need the grinding to encourage people to get gold for premium accounts and to convert xp.

after playing alot of games wargaming have a lot of restraint when it comes to the cash side

Oh but it IS a game, Dude!

Ultimate Game of the Year: Skyrim
Kinda expected this to happen, but Arkham City could have got it.

Best Action Game: Batman: Arkham City
A fine choice, i enjoyed every second of the main story.

Best Fighting Game: Mortal Kombat
Decent choice, would have had competition if Tekken Tag 2 got released earlier.

Best Shooter: Battlefield 3
At least COD wasn't the winner.

Best Racing Game: Forza 4
What the? GT5 and the F1 games are much better than this pile of rubbish.

*flame shield on*

FINE, I'll get skyrim soon escapist. Stop telling me I am missing out!

They should call it most popular instead of best. Most of this list is a wank. Where the hell is best puzzle game or horror game? Why not do something interesting like most innovative?

Thyunda:
Visiting Skyrim's Throat of the World was...dull. Top gaming moment my arse...or maybe I'm just spoiled.

That was the only part of the game worth going too after you became over-powered, which is pretty quick.

Edit: Whoops. I was thinking of that crystal cave under the mountain, I meant that place. Throat of the World was pretty average.

nikki191:

True, it is basically the whole driving force behind their F2P model, I can understand why they'd want to make getting to higher tiers a living hell without premium. But I did have premium for most of the time, and it was still a pain... I think they could tone it down just a little tiny bit without hurting the tier balance too much. The endgame tanks are the coolest ones to use anyway.

Best DLC? Best DLC?

Why is there even a category for that shit?

GOTY: Skyrim
Fine, I'll give them that. It is not the GREATEST GAME IN HUMAN HISTORY AS ORDAINED BY THE ESCAPIST but it was a good game.

Action: Batman: Arkham City
Sure, I'll go with it.

Best Strategy Game: Civilization V: Gods and Kings
Shogun 2 might argue here, but sure.

Best Tablet Game: Angry Birds Space
Yeah... not even gonna comment

Best Downloadable Game: Minecraft XBLA
Hahahaha... there are about 50 games alone that go around this. It got its well deserved props when it was PC Game of the Year. Let it go.

Best Fighting Game: Mortal Kombat
Hell... NO... MK is a fighting community running joke. Dead or Alive 5, Persona 4 Arena both deserve it more.

Best Shooter: Battlefield 3
I'm gonna guess Borderlands 2 came out too recently.

Best MMO: World of Tanks
See everyone else's post...

Best Handheld Game: Uncharted: Golden Abyss
Meh... I'm a Sony fan, and I disagree here.

Best DLC: Portal 2
?????????????

Best Sports Game: FIFA 12
At least it wasn't Madden 13. I'm a sports fan, and that game was a pile of ass. MLB 13: The Show should have won.

Best Racing Game: Forza 4
Just because it is complex does not make it good. GT5 did better.

Best Browser Game: Slender
Sure... why not.

The One to Watch: Grand Theft Auto V
I doubt it.

Top Gaming Moment: Visiting Skyrim's Throat of the World
