Cliffy B Offers to Help Capcom Fix Resident Evil

It's obviously but joke. But really, if he did get a shot to help with the next Resident Evil it could go either way. There are probably plenty of guys that can work on more than one genre. He can't make it worse than what it is at the very least.

So Cliffy B. offered to help Capcom with the Resident Evil franchise. I don't see what the big deal is.

What started as a tongue-in-cheek joke meant to poke fun at RE6 for its numerous shortcomings and deservedly tepid reviews has now escalated into a full-on Cliffy B hate train.

That's why I love the internet. All aboard!

I don't think that what the Resident Evil series needs is more Steroids, and people wearing refrigerators for armor.
What it needs is a total reboot that completely obliterates with fire the entire ridiculous lore they've built up, restarting with actual, survival horror.
No more ridiculous B.S, just straight up Slender/Amnesia style Survival Horror. Actual effective Survival Horror that doesn't leave everyone angry and depressed like the last couple Resident Evil Games.

How CliffyB would fix Resi6

-Map as many actions as possible to the A button
-Include more chest high walls
-Cancel the PC port

That's it, 10/10 GOTY material.

Nimzabaat:
Considering how well the entire Gears of War series did and that there was no steady decline in that series (i'm looking at you Bioware!!!) It's really funny to think that anyone would consider Cliff's input into the next Resident Evil as a bad thing. I mean he already stated that the overly muscled COGs weren't part of his initial concept for GoW. I think he could bring a lot of good ideas to Resident Evil. On the other hand, RE couldn't get possibly any worse...

Gotta agree with this. Underneath the ham fisted aspects of Gears, there was a real sense of character and atmosphere, especially in the first game. At the very least, Cliff would ensure RE was actually a solid action game instead of a weak cobbled together survival horror action game mess.

McMullen:
Let me guess...

Resi 7 will forget what color is, will have hyper-masculine male characters with hyper-masculine idiot lines, and will be even more poorly written?

Cliffy B isn't in a position to talk about fixing things, he's better at breaking them. Maybe that's the joke.

Don't forget corridors full of waist high walls for cover and 3rd person shooting "action". Oh and a shotgun with a chainsaw attached. And fist bumping.

erttheking:
Oh wow, the Escapist really has a lot of pent up hatred.

Yeah, this is especially sad because these people who are coming on this thread just to harp on Cliffy B are most likely to claim that "opinions are subjective and there for can't be measured" when its something they like.

Sadly with all of this talk of adding "chest high walls to Resi 7" its clear that most people on this thread are just here to hate on CLiffy B like he was the new EA. Clearly not one of them has played Resi 6, which hasn't its fair share of chest high walls...

Just seemed like he was cracking a joke to me. Nothing serious planned.

I don't know, Cliffy. I actually liked Gears for what it was, and I know that the original tried to be kind of scary, but I don't think you could really pull off Resident Evil.
...though, I'm not sure if I wouldn't want to see you try...I mean, in terms of pulling off ridiculous premises, Gears kind of ranks up there. After all, it's not everyday someone pulls off a grim-dark apocolypse with the undergrond monarch of the mole people.

In all honesty, if he feels that he could pull it off, I'd like to see him try. After all, it is outside of his comfort zone to do a survival horror game. As long as he kept the chest high walls to a minimum, showed restraint with the weapons, and kept QTEs out, it might turn out alright. Maybe?

Wow I knew the Escapist had some topics that cause rage but holy shit, the psychotic Cliffy B hate is a whole new level of crazy. All well I can add liking GOW to my long list of gaming sins.
OT: considering Resi 6 was basically a GOW clone with worse controls and laughable delusions of being scary, I don't doubt Cliffy B could make a better game.

The comments, I was laughing before I even read the hate. Now that I have, i'm nearly doubled over. One tweet, frothing mouth rage. Well done Cliffy.

Who knew one sentence can spawn entire rants.

I say let him if opportunity comes. It seems like Capcom and Konami could use all the help they can get.

erttheking:

Echoed.

You just have to ask yourself one question. Is there something to lose by this point? Resident Evil neither had a good story nor much character development. Seeing that they are trying to go action route by this point, Cliffy may help Capcpom with his experience.

Huh. Sure. Why not.

UnReal and GoW were pretty well polished games. And RE can't get much more rock bottom than it already is.

If Capcom is unwilling to take a (relatively low, given how well the series sells) risk and go back to straight up survival horror, and they'd rather keep making bad action games that pretend to be horror...Why NOT give cliffy a shot? He'd at least make it feel polished with proper gameplay flow.

People realize he's joking right? The gaming community needs to learn to take a joke better.

McMullen:

Out of curiosity, what has he broken before? The games he's made were intended to be what they were, so I'm wondering where this comes from.

Even though I really enjoyed RE6 much more than I enjoyed RE5, there's no denying the game is a unfocused mess. As much as the franchise does try to appeal to the North American type of gamer, it is ultimately a Japanese product, and still heavily endeared in Japan.

I don't think that bringing in Cliffy B would be a good call. I'm not going to harp on him for making a steroid filled grunt-fest third person shooter extremely successful and a staple for an entire console. I will however harp on him for making Unreal Tournament 3 and Bulletstorm feel like I'm playing Gears of War.

Also, Raccoon City has been through enough.. Don't sink it with a GIANT WORMMMM!

I liked RE6 but I think it was so much like GOW that I can't understand where Cliff is coming from. The cover based duck n roll combat, grenades with little red projection lines, and a lot more were shared between the games. But regardless I enjoyed it and am still playing strong.

But seriously why are people still crying that RE6 isn't like RE1? You know RE1, that game that came out in.... umm 1996?? Like almost 20 years ago? Do people honestly think they're gonna rerelease the same game 6 times every few years?? Yea we get it, youre old and nostalgic and sick of COD, so great go make yourself a waffle and get over it.

Even if they did remake RE1 over and over then guess what? It'd be the same tools crying that the games are the same and they want something new. Boo-de-freakin-hoo! The best thing for Capcom to do is ignore everyones complaints and keep at it, RE6 was on an epic scale (4 huge campaigns, multi-stage boss fights, and intense action). Had it been released as a stand alone series it'd be a hit, but since it differs from its almost 20 YEAR OLD predecessor then people think its crap.

I would be a better choice then Cliff, considering that Cliff is one of the reasons why RE6 was total shit. It was the kinds of games that Cliff makes that Capcom was emulating when they made RE6. Unless Cliffy B is a HUGE Resident Evil fan and I am somehow unaware of this, I don't think he would do the name justice. I would like to know which RE games he enjoyed the most before I get excited about the idea of him touching the franchise, because as it stands now I don't expect things to be any different with him at the helm. In fact after Seeing RE6 I am surprised he didn't have a hand in it already haha

It's a shame Capcom just won't open up to fan suggestions to find out what they did wrong.
We all know what it would take to make a great/perfect RE game:

Basically, it would have the same amount of atmosphere/backtracking/puzzles/complex map design as the remake on Gamecube, and look nearly identical in aesthetics, but be in 3D instead of having static backgrounds. It would also have the RE4 control style, and be as big or bigger then RE4.

That's it! Not hard at all.

I'mma let you finish, but if sixteen = almost twenty now, then that means I'm "almost twenty-five" because I'll be turning twenty-one in three months.

Besides, more people in this thread are bitching about Cliffy B. daring to make a joke rather than the decline in quality that Resident Evil has apparently had over the years.

Wait, wait, wait. I'm confused.
When was Resident Evil a horror series? It was never frightening. It was incredibly cheesey and silly, and the later games were decent third person shooter action games, but it was never frightening.
It's loveable in that B-Movie sort of way. Like something on MST3K.
But actual horror? It's never been that.

Fuck you very much, Cliffy B, but please, stay where you belong... out of the way of every game development company in the world.

Not only is this guy arrogant and immature (which isn't an act or anything, the guy is just genuinely a child) but he's a lot like George Lucas; he gets entirely too much credit for things that other people have done.

Wasn't that Resi 5?

Zing!

I thought it was a funny joke. What made it better was when Ono tweeted him back asking if he was at all interested in Street Fighter.

I'm pretty sure RE6 is close enough to Gears of War already.

Someone else already made that game, it's called Dead Space.

That's the problem with fans - something you want to see in a game might not be what another fan wants. I would never suggest that you are incapable of knowing what would make a great game, but when fans of a series work on a game you get things like Silent Hill: Homecoming. Maybe you liked it and maybe you didn't, but that game was received with as much criticism as RE6, it just wasn't as loud.

Fans CAN have good insight, but it is not typical and a Japanese developer in particular is not likely to respond to the constructive criticism of a fan, Capcom especially.

Yes, because we need MORE player characters with biceps the size of watermelons and MORE cover-based shooting with no horror to speak of. Yep.

As if there was even a difference between RE5/most of RE6 and Gears of War to begin with. Just take a look at these steroid-abusing meatheads:

I seriously hope you're joking or just didn't read the description xPixelatedx gave.

I'm going to give Cliffy B a 10/10 for trolling with that tweet.

/Sad thing is he probably COULD make RE7 better.

It was a joke. You and people like you need to chill with the hate. Its arrogant and immature. And it backs up the stereotype of gamers being fickle to the points of rabies induced rage.

Dead Space fulfills most of the requirements on that list, excluding the aesthetics and size. I've always described it as "Resident Evil 4 in space." Yes, it's a bit more cramped, but it's a lot closer to that style of game than RE5 or RE6.

I understand if you disagree, but that was my interpretation of that contradictory description. You can't give a game the same atmosphere as the RE remake but make it bigger than RE4, because the feel of the REmake is tense because of the small, trapped-in location of the Mansion, especially if you want to make the maps complex. The bigger something is, the less complex it is likely to be, based on most of the games I've played.

But of course, everyone has a different idea of what makes for great horror. The reason I found the atmosphere to be tense in the REmake may not be the same for you.

Resident Evil saved in only four easy steps!

1. Make the franchise dig a deep hole. [Step completed.]
2. Make it stand in the hole. [Step completed.]
3. Shoot the franchise in the forehead with a high caliber pistol.
4. Fill over the hole.

At this point they'd be better off marketing a new intellectual property as the spiritual successor, than dragging out this purifying mess any further before the inevitable end.

Im going to make a point thats been made by me already, but apparently, some people fail to understand this Operation Raccoon city is not Hated on AS HARD because it was given a side name/people knew it was a new direction/attempt at something different in the franchise. They knew JUST BY THE TITLE. However, RE6 is.....RE6. People expected what they loved about the main franchise and got exactly what they didn't want because they expected the main game series/main canon to stay on track as survival horror or go back to it. However that didn't happen. So please understand this. I hate seeing it Re-explained over and over and over and over...

It was clearly a joke. No need to get so up in arms about it.

Personally, I enjoyed the Gears Of War series. I didn't enjoy GOW3 quite as much as the others, but regardless it was still a very well polished game. I honestly don't get all the hate.

Just like I don't get all the "lolololololololololol!!! U mad bro?!" comments from some users. It just makes you look like you're more interested in poking fun at RE fans than in the discussion itself.

That would be...interesting. Funny too. Have some Gears of War Easter Eggs hidden in the next Resident Evil game. I wonder how he'd fix it: The Gears games certainly weren't known for being scary, and that's what a lot of people want from Resident Evil now. If they choose to go down the action path, Cliff is probably the man to go to then.
