You Probably Use Gmail Now

The real reason these are leading is because their other services make emails non optional.
At least gmail is a decently presentable service where as hotmail... dear fucking christ I've seen porn sites with less spam then bloody hotmail, even bloody MS sends you spam mail.

I never used hotmail. I had one with lycos and excite (then they changed), and I would up with gmail because I like how it integrates with my phone and tablet. What I don't like is how google wants to tie together all of my accounts with youtube, gmail, and G+ (of which I have no interest at all) and destroying igoogle next year.

gmail is pretty fast and very practical though. I, for one, am glad I switched.

DustyDrB:
Actually, I deleted my Gmail (and all Google accounts) and switched to GMX a month or two ago. Why? I like my things to be compartmentalized. I want my email to just be my email. But then they tied Gmail accounts to Youtube accounts, while also putting you in Google plus (I discovered I mysteriously had a Google plus account when I was trying to figure out how to separate my Youtube and Gmail) without asking you. No. I don't like the direction they are going in, so I deleted my Google accounts and went somewhere where my email can just be my email.

Still using two hotmail accounts since 2004 and I've been happy since using them.

On the other hand while I am happy with G+ (I use it daily and formed quite a lot of friends since it started last year) I'm not exactly happy they linked G+,Gmail and YT all together because a friend of mine got the domino effect when his G+ got suspended and then banned he was locked and cut off from using all 3 services his email was tied it which is why I'll always use a different email service like Hotmail.

Also I'm not a huge fan of trying everything together as one since it's much easier to get locked out of using all services when they all act as one.

I still use hotmail. I can check my hotmail instantly and it updates all the time thanks to the email app of windows 8.

Hopefully google will come up with something similar and then i will switch

They have. It is called android phones. They come with a gmail app.

Gmail...? Oh, you mean the email address I use for shit I don't want flooding my yahoo (read: main) email!

I don't have a smartphone. My phone is a phone and like makes calls, but not much else. It can text, but that is it. No fancy things.

I just hope they decide to port that app into Windows 8.

Some of us can't afford smartphones

Ahh, my bad. Read it as windows phone.
They have the gmail notifier for windows. Thy looking for that one.

Outlook is terrible...Thunderbird man.

I still use my hotmail account as my main email simply because I got lucky when they started allowing Canadian addresses (hotmail.ca) and managed to get my full name without using characters or numbers. I'm starting to think about switching to Gmail simply because it looks and feels cleaner.

I was a hotmail user now that account is mainly for mmo phishing emails. :/

I do have Gmail. But it's only one out of four email addresses. I have one with each main email service. Yahoo, Aol, Msn and Gmail.

Needed a job one as advice said I should have one more professional. As opposed to stuff such as mangagirl and the like.

I use Gmail exclusively when I'm signing up for something that requires an email, and I'm almost certain it will end up sending me spam.

.. So yeah. I guess Gmail is my spam email bucket.

I do in fact have 3 email accounts.

I have a Yahoo account which I use for when I register to online forums or internet stores. Most of my email there is advertisement that recommends products I may be interested in and for the most part I am interested in those products and I do read those emails so I love that account. It helps me buy presents and it helps me determine what I want when someone's buying me something (I can never decide).

I have my hotmail account which is just random spam and sites that I registered to without knowing if I trusted them or not, or in some cases when my yahoo address didn't work.

My Gmail account is limited to personal email, bills, stuff from the university (I linked my university account to my Gmail so I get it both places) and bank stuff.

Now I prefer Gmail for its looks and I like the new layout they have come up with, so it's all up to taste.

Still on hotmail, as I use a program to check all three of my email addresses.

This happens the same time as I start finally using Gmail instead of Hotmail?

Coincidence? I hope not...

It's just for Emails.

It's like arguing who's mouse mat is better.

I use them for my professional email.

Not surprising considering they force people to sign up for one when using unrelated products like Android or YouTube.
I made one a while ago just to sign up for shit like that but I never check it.

I was one of those people who got into Gmail back in 2004. Because someone walked into the IT department in Job Corps with an account and invites. That means Gmail because the unofficial official email for us Cisco kids.

And we all loved it because it was bigger and better than anyone else. I remember an often repeated question being: "You mean we EACH get a gigabyte?".

I currently run email addresses on Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail, so ha!, I say, have!

Yahooooooooo...

Or is it y7mail now? But either way, sort of inevitable considering how the browsers have gone.

I swear i have 3 google accounts, of which none i actually use. they all get sent to my hotmail account.
I have never made one, i have just been given them, my uni and my school have gave me an email, that has been google.
Seeing how that is thousands per year, assuming it is accross the UK, then no wonder they have gained so many users.

Also i have only ever had 2 spam emails in 8/9 years, and that was my own fault, of signing in when i had a virus on my pc, other than that i never had a single one.
I'm even an IE user.

Wait people use Outlook?

Since when? I always thought that was this weird useless app that never worked and asked you every time you started it to "configure it" for some reason even if you indulged it and actually did configure it once.

I've been using Gmail for a few years now, and it's solid. I don't get much spam, it's a clean look and I don't have many issues with it. I even switched my mom to Gmail a few months ago since our email provided from the cable company sucks so hardcore.

I've got several accounts on Hotmail I never use. One on GMail I never use (except recently). A few more here and there....

And forty on a server I pay for, about a quarter of which see daily use. Because being able to generate addresses on a whim is handy as hell.

Though recently gmail came in handy when some idiot at Earthlink started keyword* blocking my stuff to people using Earthlink addresses and I had to send everything through gmail's SMTP server to get around it. Which I ended ASAP because Google knows enough about me already.

(* After much experimentation I found anything relating to piracy and porn was censored. Including "wares" and "box". Seriously. Box. Because that word HAS NO USE IN NORMAL CONTEXT.)

Pfff, I was using it before it was cool.
*puts on hipster glasses*

...ok, lies. I use it since 2006. Had yahoo before but once I switched, never looked back. It's my serious email while yahoo is now my 'don't-wanna-use-my-serious-email-for-this' email.

I thought that too, after I got my GMail invite. Then I realized that it had a better spam filter, and a cleaner layout.

Now my yahoo is my verify login creation account, then over to G-Mail for the real deal.

I use both. However, Hotmail tends to be for signing up for random junk or game forums, while Gmail is for more "serious", personal use.

Corven:
This is probably in part due to them forcing people who want to make a youtube account also make a gmail account to register.

Ditto. I was so pissed about that, that I created a thread on the Escapist asking if this was justified or just plain wrong. The basic response at the time was uniformly nut up or shut up.

I have both - but I only created a gmail account because it was required to download EBooks.

I think I've only used it the one time to make sure it was working. I should check it out at some point. Hotmail I've been using since 2007 or something ridiculous, and it's one I got with my full name that I use for official things, so there's no way I'm switching my main accounts around. Through uni and work, and also through a hotmail I made for internet friends and gaming things, I've already got 4 email accounts to keep track of.

So you can strike one of that 287.9 million off the list. Ha ha!

Captcha: Game over.

Exactly. It's not really a victory if you're forcing people to use the service in the first place.

Hotmail doesn't work properly on Opera and it was always overloaded with spam.

Similar story for me (been using GMail for nearly 8 years now) except I started using it back in high school. The benefits of hanging out in the 3d animation and engineering-club computer lab I guess.

But at the time the amount of storage was a real godsend! Boy do I ever remember getting furious at not being able to send stuff because it was too big, or having to delete attachments because I couldn't afford the storage space!

No I do not. I am still using my email address at yahoo and I see no reason to change that. Yahoo gives me the services I need (the ability to read my email and maybe press a link) why change?

Well, the storage space was really a curiosity for us, although it was nice to have a backup for our important files. For transfer, there was this other thing that was big at the time: ICQ. ICQ had this great setting for which we got to use the intranet connection instead of having to go through an outside server... so... 5000kb/s transfers!
