Examining Narrative Devices in Far Cry 3

Examining Narrative Devices in Far Cry 3

The Far Cry 3 "Story Trailer" doesn't actually reveal a whole lot about the Far Cry 3 story.

We already have a basic idea of the setup in Far Cry 3. Bro-tourist goes to a tropical paradise with friends, tropical paradise turns into a horrific nightmare, bro-tourist smokes some local mary jane and turns into an unstoppable killing machine, cue gunfire and explosions and everybody has a good time. But what's really going on here? Who are the characters driving this narrative and even more importantly, what's our motivation for inflicting all this mayhem and bloodshed on the indigenous population?

I didn't know before I watched the new Far Cry 3 story trailer and, truth be told, I still don't. It's really just a longer look at the same thing: bro-tourist, tropical hellhole, homegrown hydro, guns. Not that I necessarily have a problem with that - the original Far Cry wasn't exactly strong on storytelling either - but if you're going to release a "story trailer," it'd be good to include some kind of new information or insight with it.

Still and all, it does look pretty cool. Sadly, the Insane Edition with the cool case and the Insane Vaas Wahine and all the rest of that good stuff remains a European exclusive; those of us on this side of the wet fantastic will have to settle for the standard release.

Far Cry 3 comes out in North America on December 4 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Well, these aren't really the people one would expect a solid story from, are they now.
But I'll still be happy as long as I can run tigers over with a jeep.

Out of all the FryCry Trailers I think this one actually told me the least about the story.

Certainly not without Tom Clancy involved...and even then. Ubisoft are terrible at characters and story I agree...but I thought the world was in love with Assassin's Creed.

Is the protagonist getting vengance for the wrecking of his boat? That would be a nice throwback.

"Still and all"? Journalism... standards...?

and i thought that the story would be told by sentient breasts.

and half offensive vodoo clichés.

and stupid stoner dudes.

yeah, the story will be stupid.

Whatever happened to that multiplayer beta? Did I just miss that completely?

Isn't the story about a group of yuppi twenty somethings getting kidnapped by pirates who are going to sell them into slavery and the one who manages to get free allying with the enemies of those pirates and killing anyone else who gets in his way to free those left captive/alive?

Cause that's what it seemed like from the trailer.

I think that little blurb isn't very different from what you get before you experience most stories be they movies, novels or videogames. That seems like a good thing to me, too often trailers show too much leaving very little suspense when you go to see the final product. All those questions shouldn't be answered in a trailer they should be answered by playing the game.

As for the motivation for killing the pirates on the island, the protagonist is trying to save his friends. BAM! Question answered. By the trailer, in the middle of it when he says that.

wow im acctually looking forward to this the gamplay in farcry 2 was good but the stroy left me with a gereral ennyui so i put it down. but this looks a little more engaging.

ill just have to wait and see, but im definatley giving it a try.

Something tells me I won't be able to play this game with the kids around...

Im personally loving the main villain. I hope they put some actual character development in it.

Actually sounds rather interesting, Lurklen

This game is made by the real Crytek right?
I hope they go a more minimalistic route this time

God, i can still vividly remember skulking around those industrial plant things at night with my G36

We're complaining because someone isn't revealing half the story in the marketing build-up?

Far Cry hasn't been made by Crytek since the original.
