"World of Warcraft Candidate" Wins Election

image

Colleen Lachowicz, who was criticized by political opponents for playing World of Warcraft, has won a seat in the Maine State Senate.

Lachowicz, the Democrat candidate for district 25 of the Maine State Senate, came to the attention of gamers early in October when her Republican opponents launched "Colleen's World," a website dedicated to her World of Warcraft persona Santiaga and some of the comments she made while playing, like admitting that she was part of a "socialist guild" or wanting to "dickpunch Arthas."

"In Colleen's fantasy world, she gets away with crude, vicious and violent comments," the site says. "Maine needs a State Senator that lives in the real world, not in Colleen's fantasy world."

Soon after the site went live, a group calling itself "Friends of Santiaga" set up an account on fundraising site ActBlue that drew in more than $6300 in donations from gamers across the U.S. Arcane election laws meant that the money couldn't go directly to Lachowicz's campaign, but had to be donated to two political action committees working to get her elected instead. That fine-line distinction led the Maine Republican Party to file an official complaint with the state ethics commission, alleging that she illegally encouraged visitors to her site to contribute to the ActBlue campaign; Lachowicz acknowledged posting the link but said she was not involved in setting up the ActBlue account and had no communication with the groups that received donations.

The ethics commission sided with Lachowicz unanimously, voting 5-0 to decline an investigation into the matter. Five days later she won an even bigger victory, defeating incumbent Republic Senator Thomas Martin by more than 900 votes. Lachowicz celebrated the victory by posting a link to the Final Fantasy IV "Victory Fanfare" on her Facebook page.

Hah! That's awesome.

good for her. Glad nobody paid attention to those attacks against her hobby. Her opponents were really grasping for straws there.

I wish my state had politicians this awesome. The Final Fantasy throwback is very cheer-worthy.

Remember that saying that there is no such thing as bad press? Seems that the negative campaigning using her WoW persona led to more money for her campaign.

Awesome. Did she level up? Did Republicans drop any good loot?

Lesson learned: If you wanna attack a candidate for their hobby, make sure there aren't millions of other people that share the same hobby

Seriously, did they think this would work? I'd bet money that at least a hundred people voted for her that might not have even voted, strictly as backlash for the anti-WoW campaign

haha you win 1 internet .. good call

For the Horde!

It's good that such an ugly smear campaign didn't have a bad effect on her political career. I say that regardless of her political views (which I'm not aware of).

I wonder what epic lootz you get from being a state senator... some purpz no doubt

I don't know if she made it, but a quick google didn't turn it up anywhere else. This is clearly a woman who knows her audience.

Honestly, the smear campaign may have backfired.

i don't know what political views are but it nice have the hobby of playing video games had no
affect on her career.

i mean really if the smear champion worked i would have been surprised
dps=death per second. i couldn't make that shit up if tried

as a 40 something man all i can say is she sounds like my kinda woman.

gaun yersel' hen!

Well the Republicans dropped a Senate seat, phat lewtz indeed and her level of political influence leveled up. One can only hope that we will stop seeing negative ads when politicians realize their constituents aren't idiots who just believe and follow behind every stupid thing thrown on a screen. It's insulting more than anything.

I wonder if this will help republicans realize that it is no longer 1980. Times change as do voters, and attacking the same past time those voters enjoy isn't going to win you votes.

This makes me happy on so many levels. Stick it to those fucking prudes and show them we're not stuck in that "only kids play videogames" mindset anymore. Good luck to you mam.

all that irony.....i need a moment *sniff*

Nice to know that the rest of the populace wants to dickpunch Arthas too.

Why can't we get these kind of controversies for the US Senate? You know the kind with a cool ending.

Nooo ... there we just get old white dudes who think rape babies are gifts from god ...

actually that particular guy lost his seat...

And then we'll find out she gains substenance from devouring the souls of kittens.
Like all politicians.

Nice to see the lowest common denominator didn't win for once, though.

I enjoy seeing knee jerk gaming haters lose.
Very much indeed.

Obligatory Persona 4 battle win song:

OT: I was actually expecting that smear campaign to work, but it proved me wrong. I'm happy for her.

I guess this proves that you shouldn't mess with something as influential as gaming/internet culture or else it could backfire horribly.

I, for one, support dickpunching Arthas.

Funny thing is they thought they were giving her negative PR but instead they won her the gamer vote and most other people probably didn't give two shits about it.

I was partial to the Fark headline when I was reading it.

First Orcish-American candidate elected to Maine State Senate, living up to her campaign slogan of "Lok'tar ogar"

I couldn't read the article at work, but it still struck me as funny that someone would come up with that headline.

Yeah .. but the fact that someone who is supposed to be making laws for this country said such a thing publicly at all makes me incredibly sad for the human race.

Meanwhile this controversy reminds me that occasionally people aren't always as idiotic as you'd think.

This is awesome in so many ways...

LOK'TAR OGAR!!!

Seriously im from England so I have no clue whats going on over there past these articles but still...

FOR THE HORDE!!!

or wanting to "dickpunch Arthas."

Finally, a platform I can get behind!

its good to see this
the type of entertainment that a person prefers should not be taken into account when dealing with unemployment or infrastructure problems.
its like saying that i dont care about your bill to repave all the streets because you enjoy music and are vocal about it rather than television.

I don't see how gaming was a negative thing for her position, I'd rather she kill npcs in a game if it keeps her from paying for prostitutes with tax money.

This warms my heart ;_;

Whether she made it or not, the fact that she even posted it on her Facebook is just epic.

Your right though, this woman is clearly in touch with her audience and it showed in the election.

Good for her :D
Like I said when this was first brought up
If that's the worst thing about her, then she deserves to be elected
Hell, she deserves to be elected into the White House as far as I care
Once again good luck to her :)

I'm glad I don't vote in Maine. Can't vote a straight Democratic ticket if one of them is Horde.
