Halo 4 Scores New Multiplayer Game Type Next Week

Halo 4 Scores New Multiplayer Game Type Next Week

A popular playlist makes a return as 343 Industries begins game type rotations.

Halo 4 is barely out of the gates, and the new shooter is already getting a title update that will add a new game type to the online multiplayer suite. Scheduled to arrive the week of November 12th, the update will bring back the popular SWAT deathmatch mode, which Halo: Reach fans will surely remember.

Unlike most other Halo multiplayer modes, SWAT tweaks weapon damage and armor abilities to allow for one-shot headshot kills with any weapon. The mode also restricts the use of ordinance drops, ensuring that players only have the DMR, Battle Rifle, and Magnum sidearm with which to dispatch one another.

In an update posted on the Halo Waypoint app on Xbox Live, community manager Jessica Shea notes that weekly playlist tweaks will be the norm for Halo 4. In addition to the standard playlist sets, players will be treated to rotational playlists with varying game types. If the response to any given playlist is strong enough, it may find a place as a more permanent game type.

I hope they do, because right now the playlist that got launched with the game are very standard and not very diverse in custom gametypes.

Oh good! I was missing SWAT terribly.

Oh no! Not SWAT!

As great as Halo's defacto hardcore mode is, I am not looking forward to getting beat down in yet another generation of the game.

I stank at SWAT in Halo 2, Halo 3 and Reach, I'll bet in 4 I find it just as addictive and that I'll get womped just as frequently.

Damn you 343!

Well, seeing as my copy finally came in the mail, Im gonna have to buy a gold membership now. Though I remember playing SWAT in Reach, and sucked at it (I always aim for center mass, headshots are too much of a pain for me.)

I was hoping I'd see SWAT when I read the title - my favourite gametype returns! Pop-pop-pop all day long. :D

This gametype will be nothing but a DMR reign of terror. Let the one hit kill carnage begin!

When its a DMR fest it is great.

When your using a magnum as a difficulty multiplier it becomes a whole new challenge.

Ordnance, not Ordinance, unless they added a mode where you could call down religious orders to smite your foes. Which would be awesome.

People... Like SWAT mode? I knew it was popular, but Ididn't realise real people actually liked it. It's just Halo, but with all the stuff that makes it interesting stripped out!

And it drains people away from all the other gametypes, which leaves even less attention for the objective based game types.

I like SWAT because it keeps all the 1337 MLG FUR LOIF players in one place. Of course, that makes it less enticing to actually play SWAT, but that's the price you pay. No, I'm not impressed by your MLG avatar and yes, I can actually play more than one game type. I'm sure there must be someone out there with an MLG avatar who isn't an insufferable n00b, but you all know the type I'm complaining about. Apologies to the non-idiots, absolutely no offense intended.

Exactly. It's a fun occasional change of pace, but buying Halo so you can play SWAT is like buying a chess set so you can stick the pieces up your nose. But the perception among MLG n00bs is that screen-centering is the measure of a good player in what is supposed to be a slow-paced, tactical shooter. I never understood why they don't play a game that actually has good twitch gameplay if everything else is beneath them.

I just miss Headhunter...

Headhunter can be either super fun or super frustrating. In the end it comes down to who can get a bead on the head first.

SWAT? Fair enough, I guess, it was a popular gametype, but...but.
Firefight pls.
Srsly 343. Firefight.
Just consider it.

Cool, hopefully this means they will add more modes in the future like multi-team (love me some rocket race), firefight, and maybe even scoring mode for the Campaign.

I dunno... the only religious orders you can call in are the Sisters of Battle, and they tend to just burn everything down. Sure you'd get a lot of kills, but all the team-kills would render everything pointless...
Unless Space Marine Chapters count as orders, in which case - awesome!

I want Team Doubles and Big Team Battle back.

Remember folks, this is a WEEKLY thing, all your favourite modes will be back eventually.

Hey, woooooh...

I'm gonna start by saying that I really like SWAT, it was my most played game type, and I am the least similar person to what youve just described there, and even given my experience with that mode I'm completely unaware of what youre talking about.
Yes, I dont talk to people other than my friends on Halo, but I cant actually recall any time anybody did speak on SWAT. Ive never received any messages, nothing. Ive had no bad, nor good, experiences with that little slice of that community.

I dont see how Halo doesnt have "good twitch gameplay". Ive played most FPSs, and I'm not a fan of the genre, however I do enjoy SWAT. Maybe Ive just somehow missed those particular games that do it better, but the only game that comes to mind with that kind of gameplay is Rainbow Six: Vegas, which i did like, but not as much as Halo.

Not that this really concerns me considering I'm completely avoiding Halo 4, i just thought what you two were saying was just a little unfair.

They took out BTB for SWAT?
Are they serious? :/ Whoever makes these decisions now... just get rid of them because, it does not take an expert to realise how stupid that decision is.

>Withhold gametypes already in most every previous game
>Add them back weekly
>Call them updates

Basically if you're not a dick what I'm saying doesn't apply to you lol.

I like SWAT too. But Halo has always focused on the tactical side of things. That's one of the big things that distinguished Halo: CE from other shooters in 2001. The super fast twitchy gameplay that PC shooters offered didn't translate well to the console controller, so they toned it down a little and made it more about creating an interesting challenge that required picking the right tool for the job, balancing risk-reward, and responding to the changing situation. There are faster, twitchier games if you want something that focuses on that.

I like SWAT too, but if you want to be an elitist dick about ONLY playing the twitchiest possible game, and calling everyone who doesn't a scrub, you ought to at least find the proper venue. ->

No offense intended.

Well, I really enjoyed SWAT in Halo 3 and Reach.

Granted, I graced the semi-pro lands for a bit, but screw those guys. They were all dicks, so I got out of that. (That's beside the point)

I liked SWAT probably because I was insanely good at it, and was my go-to playlist when I just wanted to go 30-2 for a couple games. But I'm not one of those OMG MLG types by any stretch.

Geo Da Sponge:

Um. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the biggest fan of SWAT either, but...What exactly do you think "popular" means?

Anyway, that's great and all, but what about Lone Wolves(And all the game types that entails), Team Doubles, Team Swords (or whatever it was called) Griffball....And that's all I got. Seriously though, Halo 3 had metric shit-tons of gametypes.

Great... now give us firefight so the actual fun can begin! Seriously, I can't even imagine how this game was let out the doors without that gametype.

Well, okay... What I was getting at was that I could always clearly see high numbers of people playing in the SWAT playlist, but I could never imagine actually meeting someone who enjoyed it nor could I even guess at what they found appealing about it.

I heard that they added Griffball as a gametype all of its own, just like they did with Infection in Halo 3. I don't know if that means it actually has a playlist, though (I also don't know whether you own the game or not, so if you already know more than I do feel free to ignore me).

SWAT huh? Meh, it was ok, but there were too many '1337 omgz NoScopes' types there.

I'm all for the 'villain of the week' gametype rotation though :D Reminds me of those double XP weekends that were there more often than not.

wake me up when griffball is back in proper match making rotation =/

343 continues with their derp de derp handling of the multiplayer.

There is absolutely no reason for game types like SWAT to be on a rotation.

Put them up to be played and leave them there. I want to fire up my 360 to play the game type I want to play, when I want to play it. I do not want to have to pay attention to some stupid rotation to find out when I will be able to play the game I want to play.

343 has shown with Halo 4 that it doesn't understand what made Halo multiplayer what it was and why it was popular without having to be like all the other shooters.

The only thing they did right with the multiplayer is make capture the flag its own game type instead of stuffing it and other objective style games into the Big Team game type. Basically, they did the one thing I wanted Bungie to do when they did the multiplayer.

The only reason I played Big Team was to play slayer matches with the max amount of players. Which at times was hard to do, because for some "unexplained" reason in the Reach multiplayer, every time we got a list of all slayer games in Big Team, that was when we got the stupid load error that brought up a new list, which usually would have mostly CTF games, and of course that is what the numb-nuts I got loaded up with wanted to play.

Mcoffey:
Oh good! I was missing SWAT terribly.

I miss team snipers as well, but considering there are really only two maps that are good for such a game, 343 will have to really work on making good sniper maps for upcoming map packs.

Geo Da Sponge:

*raises hand and waves*

Hi, how you doing? I'm Sonic Doctor and I like SWAT.

Now you've met someone that likes it. I like it because it lets me hone my head-shot skills, and I get to see a quick kill instead of dancing around.

xPixelatedx:
Great... now give us firefight so the actual fun can begin! Seriously, I can't even imagine how this game was let out the doors without that gametype.

Spartan OPs that is why.

I felt iffy about Halo 4 when I heard that there was no firefight mode, but after playing the Spartan OPs mission and having the knowledge that there will be at least 45 more missions to come, I got over not having firefight.

I hope they're not in regular rotations. I don't want to be shoved into a gametype I don't bloody like.

Sonic Doctor:
snip

Is it going to be on rotation? As in, there for a little bit and then gone? That is supremely lame. I've liked what they've done with 4 for the most part, although it definitely lacks the bungie polish, but I' play the game on my time, not theirs.

CpT_x_Killsteal:

If it is done right, such things like SWAT will have their own section like how they gave Capture the Flag its own section(thank God).

So basically, such a thing shouldn't effect you unless you actually choose that game type form the War Games menu to play it.

But since this is 343 we are talking about, they are going to screw something up.
