Russia Considers Crackdown on Violent Games

 Pages PREV 1 2

In Soviet Russia, game hunts you.
No that doesn't work. All the peices are there, I just can't get them right. Anyone got any good ones?

OT: I thought this was going to be more about violent games in general. I could see that happening, they have replaced Nazis as main antagonist and cannon foder in most shooter nowadays.

im really curious: what if one country doesnt show any kind of violent movies or games, only harmless dramas and comedies, and someone kills few people, will they still blame games and movies for it???

They'd probably blame terrorists or piracy, or piracy terrorists, or terracy as the cool kids call it.

lol, sounds still better then blaming games all the time. but im sure these idiots will find some way to have nonsense excuse why someone would kill anyone.

This is absolutely Russia's biggest problem.

Why not ban guns rather than digital media? The government licensed him the means to kill 6 people and it's the fault of a game? I don't understand why civilians need guns nowadays anyway.

I have guns because I have land and animals. There are legitimate reasons for people to own guns, banning the guns means only the criminals will have guns.

As well as crazy people with murderous tendencies. People like that kid who recently shot and killed 6 people because a girl rejected his advances. Or that Danish bloke who shot and killed about 40 people, mainly kids!

Owning guns for the sake of owning guns is ridiculous. I bet this guy didn't have land or keep farm animals.

Having or not having a gun doesn't change the outcome. There are plenty of instances of mass murders and other heinous crimes in places where guns are banned. The reason behind this is that even though guns are banned, guns still exist inside of those countries. The issue is, they are all owned by criminals. Even without guns in the entire world, these things would still happen. Do you think they went without mass murders and other violent crimes before gunpowder was invented? The same thing happens to guns as does video games, people blame the guns for the actions of the people.

I've worked for Law Enforcement in the US, and the majority of violent gun crimes are committed with illegal firearms. The criminals obtain unregistered firearms through black market methods, the same methods they use in countries where guns are banned. So taking away a private citizen's right to own firearms only succeeds in taking away a citizen's firearm. It doesn't take guns out of the hands of the criminals.

Unstable people who go off their rockers and decide to go kill a bunch of people will find a way to do so without firearms if necessary. The same goal can be accomplished using incendiary weapons or explosives, the ingredients of which can be found quite easily (as can the recipes). So instead of being upset at the guns for shooting people, how about being upset at the crazies who kill people.

I hear this argument often enough to know the holes in the logic. Plenty of people get on fine with out guns, and that is fine. I don't have an issue with people not liking guns, and I don't have an issue with countries that ban guns. If that way works for them, more power to them. I, however, will continue owning guns, even if I moved away from the farm and into a city, and I expect it to be no different. With the exception of the firing range, I would probably never have any cause to pull it out of the safe.

A scapegoat for the more actual problem of Russia being an oppressive place to live. Blame the games, it doesn't make the problem any better.

Chess is pretty violent game too
You are forced to kill off your own troops for tactical advantage
And eventually there is full graveyard of fallen soldiers
Hell, my imagination even adds blood and screams when someone gets killed

So... maybe ban chess too?

Wouldnt his alcohol binge before the slaughter merit a ban on alcohol?

I wanna see their faces when this happens again, and they've already banned violent games. What will they blame then?

I'm guessing banning guns would make too much sense. Also violent movies ant TV shows. And obviously violence didn't exist before those things came into existence. What a bunch of idiots.

I think it's easy and wrong to shift the blame on videogames.

That being said, Manhunt's gameplay is so singularly focused on causing violent death and getting a 'nice' view on the carnage, that I really have to wonder, why make such a game? And what kind of person would enjoy playing that?

If I were a Rockstar employee and I'd get assigned to a project like that, I'd request a transfer or hand in my resignation right there. It's below my dignity to play -let alone create- a game like that, and I will have a very low opinion of anyone listing Manhunt as a favorite game.

Oh, so my country has jumped on the "let's do something about violent videogames" bandwagon at last. Yay? I bet our government will handle the issue in an even more backwards and ignorant way than they did in some western countries. Maybe we can even outdo Australia in that regard!

The problem is that many people in the Russian government don't really know what videogames are. There is a certain lack of younger politicians who understand that you can't apply Soviet ways of thinking to the rapidly changing modern world. I bet there's a similar problem in many other countries, actually. People actively trying to get certain videogames banned don't understand them because videogames in their current form are a relatively new medium, and people always act with prejudice against new things they don't understand.

i dint like the game either. i dint even bother to finish it because it was just so blunt and boring and bad to play. even when you had to use stealth, which was a plus, the game it self just had nothing compelling to keep playing.

To people who own and use guns responsibly, you sound exactly like the people who want to ban violent video games. That's all.

Haha, I immediately thought of this little 1988 gem:

The guy was drinking for 5 days prior to the act, but noooooo we can't blame it on that, the Russian vodka sales would suffer. I have a feeling they'd ban chia pets before they would ban alcohol, as chia pets clearly incite murderous tendencies.

Hmm...the guy has been drinking for five days and is upset that a female co-worker turned him down.

*Reads that he his a fan of Manhunt*

BURN IT! BURN IT TO THE GROUND! Seriously though, I'm a fan of light gun shooters and I don't go killing people because of it.

Tanis:
Stalin didn't play Manhunt and, under his rule, more people were killed than HITLER.

Huh...

Can you please stop perpetuating that shitty argument.

He is Norwegian and it was 77 he killed.

Some girl rejected him so he drank for five straight days and then killed 6 people. Clearly video games are to blame.
Wait.. I bet he also liked porn, yeah, lets blame porn for the killings.

Le gasp! I used to watch my sister play that game all the time when I was little and I thought it was a riot.

OT: Scapegoating is easy, so even though it's more attributed to booze and rejection, it's much more convenient to blame the games. Hopefully this doesn't turn out poorly for our Russian gaming friends!

*Looks at pre/post-world war 2 genocides"
Sure dudes, videogames, that's the reason.

hmm crackdown on violent videogames, human trafficing, or the russian mob hmm decisions decisions.

My bad. It's fixed now.

Hmm. Murderer had been drinking for five days and also kind of likes this one game...

LET'S BAN THIS GAME RIGHT NOW!

OK....wait

What is this Manhunt game.

And is it fun >_>
