Updated: McAfee AntiVirus Founder Wanted for Murder

image

John McAfee is on the run from Belize police following the shooting of a fellow American last weekend.

John McAfee, one of the early pioneers of the antivirus software industry, is wanted for murder by the Belize national police force. He is currently a prime suspect in the shooting of American expatriate Gregory Faull, who was killed in his home sometime in San Pedro Town on Saturday night. Reports say that the two men had been on unfriendly terms for some time, with Faull even going so far as to file a formal complaint against McAfee for firing guns and displaying "roguish behavior".

McAfee Associates, now known as McAfee, Inc., helped popularize the concept of web security as early as 1987, when the world was still coming to grips with the internet. After selling the organization for $100 million, John McAfee moved to Belize to start a herbal drug operation, which is when things got a little odd.

Reports indicate that as McAfee's herbal company stalled, he became increasingly erratic. He found himself estranged from other American expatriates in the country, and stated that he'd hired criminals and drug traffickers for his security staff. More recently, McAfee reportedly began posting on the Russian-hosted website Bluelight about his efforts to purify bath salts, a drug known for its hallucinogenic effects. In April, police arrested McAfee and led a raid on his compound that uncovered a chemistry lab and an entire armory of weapons. After discovering that everything was licensed and legally obtained, McAfee was reluctantly released.

Faull was found by his housekeeper on Sunday morning with a gunshot wound to the head and his laptop and iPhone missing. Police are following several leads, but given McAfee's behavior and relationship with Faull, he is currently considered a prime suspect in the investigation. McAfee and Faull's most recent argument appears to have revolved around dogs, most likely guard dogs kept on McAfee's property.

A representative from McAfee, Inc. has stated that it will not comment on former employees, save to say that the company is no longer associated with its founder.

UPDATE: According to Wired, McAfee is hiding from the authorities while proclaiming his innocence. The article explains that when McAfee saw the police approaching his property, he quickly buried himself in sand, placing a cardboard box over his head so he could breathe. "It was extraordinarily uncomfortable," he said, "But they will kill me if they find me."

McAfee claims that he knows nothing about the shooting, and that his position as prime suspect is due to a government vendetta against him. McAfee also claims that the authorities poisoned his guard dogs. "The coast guard dropped off a contingent of black-suited thugs at 10:30 tonight at the dock next door," McAfee said, "They dispersed on the beach. A half hour later all of my dogs had been poisoned. Mellow, Lucky, Dipsy, and Guerrero have already died."

Belize's Gang Suppression Unit denies any attempt to poison McAfee's guard dogs. "This guy amazes me every day," unit head Marco Vidal said. "We don't have anything personal against Mr. McAfee. There is no need for us to poison dogs."

I bet this a guy they wish they didn't know, let alone be founded by.

Well Mcafee stock is about to drop. even if they are not associated with the dude anymore.

I don't know that that is the case, I mean McAfee hasn't been involved with the company for 2 years

This.... this dude is utterly bizzare.

Are you sure this is all legit?.... because this sounds like some future HBO story about some computer nerd going rouge and fighting the drug war in his own unique way....

seriously, this guy's tale is just bizarre.

what exactly is roguish behaviour? Was he crouching a lot and punching people in the kidneys

Why can't no one spell this word right??

Because the idea of men putting on makeup is mildly amusing?

OT: Well, didn't expect that. I bet McAfee AntiVirus is going to have some tough times...

"why can no one spell this word right?" or "why cant anyone spell this word right?"

double negatives. bad. very bad.

OT: He really is crazy isn't he. I wonder how McAfee will hold up in the next few months. *McAfee goes bankrupt. service no longer viable*

Bath Salts were involved. Guuhh...

I think you meant "why can't anyone spell this word right?"

OT: I remember something about the McAfee antivirus program's tendency to flip out and crash, back in the early 2000s. There's a bad joke here somewhere.

Oh dear... This is embarrassing.

I often rewrite and re-word my posts like I have OCD and it seems I left two parts of different sentences as one. You'd think compulsive and lengthy editing means I catch all of my typos, but I also abandon too many posts for not being completed quickly enough. I was obviously too hasty this time.

That was my reaction when someone sent me a link to this story at work. It was so bizarre that I couldn't even come up with a humorous quip for it.

This isn't the first time this guy has run afoul of the Brazilian authorities. About six months ago, he wound up going on the run after police raided his house. http://www.alltechienews.com/posts/poor-john-mcafee-belize-police-arrested-the-antivirus-icon-and-killed-his-dog

Venturing deep into procedurally generated dungeons with no way to recover if you die.

Wait, that's roguelike...

Challenge: Say "Belize police" five times fast.

P.S. Thanks

He looks like Danny Bonaduce

I didn't know Brazil had annexed Belize.

I bloody hope so. McAfee firewall keeps blocking my internet connection. THAT is murder.

Don't you mean "Man, is this the Strange Typos Thread, or what?"

I'm sorry...we have a theme going here : )

OT: Well, McAfee has been responsible for the murder of millions of processor cycles as well as memory bandwidth, so it figures that in time the man himself would do it. What a strange story...bath salts? Chemistry lab and weapons arsenal in Belize? I still want $100 million bucks, but this shit does happen to people with too much money overnight...

So, this guy going on the run is pretty much status quo for the authorities over there?

"Well, looks like its Tuesday, time for mr Mcafee to go on the run and for us to play hide and seek."

People still think Bill Gates is in charge at Microsoft. McAfee (the company) is definitely going to have some fallout from this because people are ridiculously stupid.

According to one news article he bought a million dollar patrol boat for the Belizean coast guard out of what he initially claimed to be philanthropy, but which he later admitted was a bribe to keep them from hassling his ferry business.

Sounds like the local constabulary has it in for him.

First this guy's responsible for shitty anti-virus software and now this?!

My faith.

It is lost.

>>> Living in basement
>>> Make lots of money
>>> Feel like you can do anything
>>> Path 1: gain +15 intelligence and be mature
>>> Path 2: gain +15 Risk-Taking and do whatever you want

For people who've ALWAYS had money they grew up with the mentality of being able to whatever you want without ruining themselves; its similar to when you turn 18, do you A) go clubbing and hang with prostitutes or B) continue on with your life and be smart about restraint and choices

So this guys story is like Breaking Bad in reverse? Become a gazillionaire, THEN start cooking up the illegal narcotics, bath salts and recreational household cleansers?

On top of all that it looks like he is wearing a white dress after Labor Day. Oh the shame!

"McAfee changes name to Secure Highspeed Internet Extra Layered Defense"

I was thinking "Secure Highspeed Extra Layered Domain Online Network security" (S.H.E.L.D.O.N)

Another victim McAfee has claimed, following the death of my laptop.

Eh, his antivirus software has ALWAYS sucked.
Still, should have stopped with the guns and started with the anger management.

In Belize of all places...
