Halo 4 Makes $220 Million in its First Day

Halo 4 Makes $220 Million in its First Day

Halo 4 makes big bank but probably won't outdo this season's other big shooter.

You may want to sit down for this. It turns out that Halo is really popular and a lot of people bought the latest installment. How many people? We're not sure, Microsoft hasn't released exact sales figures, but it has released a ludicrously large number with a dollar symbol in front that I'm told represents how much the game made in its first 24 hours on sale: $220 million. That's roughly 9.16 million dollars an hour or 2436.29 dollars a second. There's a nice figure to contemplate while you fish today's supper out of a nearby garbage can.

Fortunately for us, Microsoft has taken a break from building castles out of stacked dollar bills to do some good old fashioned statistical bragging. Halo 4 has become the most played installment in the series, with over 4 million players spending some 31.4 million hours on the game in the last five days. This brings the total time humanity has spent playing Halo games to around 4 billion hours or 456318 years. That's about the same amount of time our species spends watching YouTube videos each month. Total lifetime earnings for the series now stand at $3.38 billion.

Of course, while success is nice, crushing your enemies beneath your money-booted heel is even nicer, and that's where Halo may stumble. Call of Duty: Black Ops II launches tomorrow (November 13th) and based on the performance of previous installments in the series, it'll likely out-perform Halo 4 by a solid margin - though the fact these games are competing at all kind of proves that publishers are still iffy on how the whole "release date" thing works. In its first 24-hours, Black Ops numero uno sold 5.6 million units in the US and UK alone, while its first week earnings totaled around $550 million. Modern Warfare 3 made $400 million in its first 24 hours. Of course, both of those games did have the benefit of being multiplatform releases.

Our own Justin Clouse gave Halo 4 a highly respectable four out of five, not everyone was so kind.

Still, I doubt their current abodes are hardly spartan.

Halo made moneys? The shock!

Good to see it is a success, but with Black Ops 2 being released tomorrow, I think some schools will have a few missing teenage boys...

why only teenage boys?? Why not one teenage girl who love Blackops and anime(and loves yaoi a lot)

Black Ops has the advantage of being released on multiple consoles, so it makes sense it would sell more copies.

It will be interesting to see how the 360 version of it stacks up against Halo 4, though.

Well, I suppose there is that...and I am sure there will be plenty of schools and parents complaining about how "Violent video games are destroying our youth" minutes after release...

I remember fox news saying halo 4 would hurt the elections and it didn't. Violent videogames won't makes kids violent.

It isn't the game to blame. It is the parents who don't know what the hell they are doing.

Oh well.

OT:

I am excited for Black Ops II as it looks like it will do something DIFFERENT. At least more so than these yearly scheduled releases have been so far. I hope it does well and does change things quite a bit.

I bought it, haven't played it yet though.

Rather foolishly I ordered it from Amazon, in Chinese, via Hong Kong. Looking back at the listing my mistake should have been obvious, but it's always the obvious ones that get you.

Feel free to laugh at me now.

Guys, this isn't enough. They have to make three times that much TO BREAK EVEN. As gamers, we must buy twenty copies each and buy the imminent DLC for each copy, lest we come off as entitled.

I get the whole "Girls play games too" angle. But what relevance does your consumption of faux gay pornography have to do with either Halo franchise specifically, or gaming in a more general sense? Or is your declaration of love for both Call Of Duty, and an Japanese pop-art genre renown for it's depictions of man-on-man rape your own special way of saying all gamers who identify as female aren't necessarily all stuck-up, kill-joys?

The internet told me to tell you, "Welcome home!" :P

For the next installment, we will need to help in the packaging of Doritos so that they can pay MS for our labor. OTHERWISE MS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RECOUP DEVELOPMENT COSTS.

Fixed that for you

Love the picture of Scrooge McDuck.

My wife bought my son a copy for Christmas so unfortunately I'm not allowed to play it until then. Then again my brother and half of his friends have it...

I know some girl out there is looking forward to blackops(usually a nerd who love anime and yaoi)

well guess we should expect halo is going the same path modern warfare and such. can't wait to play halo 5 next year

Sorry. but that gave me the best laugh I've had all week. Don't feel too bad though, I laughed because I did the same thing and bought the German version of Halo Wars and didn't think anyone else was that dumb. I still play the game though, and like most have come to despise the Warzenschwein rush tactic.

Its halo. You could wrap feces in a box titled "halo: the brown edition" and they would line up to buy it.

Pound bet that Microsoft and associates complain about not having enough profit from games within six months (maybe less.)

great so now, for the next gen we can spect:

more of the 2 weapon system (yay...)
a few granades (yay.....)
more linear corridors (yay)
they will be set in the space (yay....)
will have moar SPESS MEHRENS
and they will have 0 inovation

Honestly I am a little surprised the Halo IP is still so strong. It's been a while since Halo has done anything groundbreaking and I thought maybe that insane fanaticism that the games have relied on in the past would start to wear off, especially since this game looks so different from the other Halos. I guess not.

Well deserved. It's a great game.

its a great good glad to see its doing well. the only problem is the ending not bad for a first part but still i felt they could have done better

The two weapon system works great for Halo. I don't see the sense in blaming it for what other games do. Same with the grenades, it complements the tactical style of Halo. Halo gameplay is about planning and execution, balancing risk and reward. There has to be limits and associated costs to things.

Halo isn't known for linear corridors. You've obviously never played a Halo game.

The Halo series has always been very innovative, and Halo 4 continues the tradition with Spartan Ops and myriad smaller additions and tweaks like Dominion mode, a new vehicle, and new weapons like the binary rifle. This is a series where fans tear each other to shreds arguing over which title had the best online because the emphasis and mechanics change a lot between titles. Details matter in Halo. Also, Halo wins that game by default for having Forge.

Maybe you should try playing Halo. You may like it. And if you at least understand what you're criticizing, you won't come off like your just whining about something because it makes bank. God knows you could have come up with better criticisms if you would actually play a Halo game.

Believe what? That a woman can't be a stuck-up, kill-joy if she enjoys things like reading fictional fantasies that involve men forcibly diverting other men onto the Hershey Highway for a little dirt-box racing?

Yeah, I do. Now I could be wrong, as I've never met the girl. She could be a hypocrite for all I know.

Halo 4 is released on the Xbox exclusively and makes a huge pile of money.

Black Ops 2 is released on three consoles and PC and people are predicting that it will make more money than Halo 4.

In other news, water is, in fact wet.

Just playing devil's advocate here, I think that all male nerds are stereotyped into liking yuri too. Really it just seems to be an overall stereotype that "people like seeing two of the other sex getting it on" really it could be a lot worse, there are a lot more insulting stereotypes out there.

These first day numbers get larger each time! If anyone needs proof of gaming becoming more accepted in society, just look at these numbers.

Well, I'm glad it made money. But I've also really liked Halo for years. Despite hate that it garners from the internet (which, lets face it, hates everything with a mainstream budget), Halo has always been an innovative series on the console side of things. I hate seeing the flack about things like the 2 weapon system, regenerating health, and crap like that - Halo did these kinds of things to create tension. At the core of the Halo franchise, we see a mixing of the action first person shooter with layers of survival horror thrown in (play any level with the flood in it, and examine your surroundings, and what the game is having you do).

A 2 weapon system utilized correctly will force you to choose what you carry, and will directly effect your encounters. The game is designed in a way that would be broken if you could cycle between Pistol, Shotgun, Sniper, and Rocket Launcher - as well as make most of the weapons obsolete. As a level goes on, your supposed to scavenge. And regenerating health is a core mechanic to the game. For one, you're pretty fragile. For two, it emphasises minute to minute tension, instead of overall tension of "When am I gonna get a healthpack?"

Other games have misused these mechanics (or flat out stole them), without thinking of implications, but that doesn't mean Halo is bad. Thats atleast what I have to say.

As for Halo 4, its pretty alright. Aside from aesthetic, I think it lives up to the Halo name. The campaign is disappointing - we're in the dark about most of whats going on, its paced too quickly, and its not interesting, but the segments are nice enough that I can live with it. The multiplayer is pretty awesome - since Call of Duty seemed to have no problem stealing mechanics from Halo, Halo did the same thing back - and the mechanics it lifts make the game feel much more dynamic. It could use a bit of tweaking, but its certainly not a bad game.

As for being outsold by Call of Duty, thats a given. Halo pushed 220 Million copies on a single platform. If Call of Duty only pushes 75 Million on each of its launch platforms, it'll still beat Halo. Thats the benefit of multi platforms.

They already said Halo 5 is not out next year. It will all be about Spartan Ops story for a while.

im not blaming halo (even if i feel its overrated), im blaming succes and companies coping what is succesful and failing miserably
