Battlefront III Died Just Inches From the Finish Line

You should link back to that old article you guys ran about what happened between LucasArts and the devs. It was some really messy stuff. LucasArts is a bunch of heartless bastards.

From the sounds of things about this development cycle, Free Radical started work when Hayden Blackman was still in charge of Lucasarts. I really respect him. He's a great storyteller, and he had a real enthusiasm for the Star Wars Universe.

...Which is why when he stepped down from the company, everything went to shit, with the Rogue Squadron sequel getting canned, Battlefront 3 resulting in Free Radical being ground into dust, and Blackman's own pet project, the Force Unleashed Trilogy, getting cut down to two games, and the second one having half its content removed before shoving it out the door.

And for everyone saying "Now that Disney is in control, maybe we'll see something new!", forget about it.

Disney is just the parent company. The senior staff of Lucasarts has not been fired or moved. They just answer to Disney rather than Lucas. Nothing will change until they get rid of the senior staff.

Motherfucker canned a rogue squadron sequel too?! Yeah, because god forbid we have star wars in star wars. We could have gotten back with the old team, blown up star destroyers, shoot down ties, and much more, but no. We could have seamless space to ground battles, but no. What do we get? Star wars kinect and star wars 1313, which is just uncharted with star wars paint.

The old star wars is a zombie. Living on through the original trilogy and the rogue squadron, rebel assault, and x-wing series respectively.

This new star wars is just glowy swordfights and gritty clones.

THAT is painful

I mean if a half finished project is closed down its a shame. But a 99% done project.. that hurts

Why? Why would you bring back such painful memories?

What's next? Are the folks at Interplay going to come forward and say Van Buren was ready to go gold?

Not a fan... but im facepalming at the idiocy here...

Ship the bloody product and make some money. Thats the whole point of the exercise last i checked.

Unless there were legal reasons holding it back, why the hell wouldn't you release what is essentially a finished product to recoup some of the development investment?

As for the game potentially not being recognized? Battlefront II was rather beloved.
Plus, I thought the point of franchise exploitation was SELLING THINGS BASED ON THE FRANCHISE'S RELEVANCE.

I'm not clued into the particulars, but this suggests something HORRIFYING was happening at upper management at the time.

Far more likely is that the game wasn't anywhere near 99% complete, and LucasArts shitcanned the game to avoid having to pony up cash for marketing when the team went way over budget.

This is really sad as I loved the battlefront series. I doubt it'll see the light of day with Disney at the helm. It may be "99% finished" but it'd still need to be marketed and distributed which isn't cheap. Also it's an old PS2 game. It couldn't be released now. It'd be so dated. It would have to be completely reworked from the foundation up. New engine, new art assets, new sound effects, new online elements.

I'm sure Lucasarts would rather release a new game than attempt to revive BF3

Sadly this is something I doubt we'll ever see.

Dammit, I was looking forward to this game so hard.
I hope they decide to finish it and release it anyway at some point.

You know, I think I would've preferred it if you'd never told us this, Mike.

You'd think they would put it on hold until their financial situation stabilized for bug testing and other stuff but...

I think I'll take my pre-order of 1313 and go.

Zhukov:
So... what actually happened to get it cancelled?

It's one thing to bin a prospective project, but you would think that the publisher, having already spent the money to get the thing made, would want to get it on shelves rather than mothball it.

As an odd twist of fate had it, I had an odd visitor in the local GW a few years back, who claimed to be a former Free Radical employee. Apparently, the whole reason BF III was cancelled was because Free Radical wanted to take their time with it, while LucasArts were basically rushing it along. He even gave detailed story analysis of What Could Have Been.

Of course, even today I'm not sure if the guy was talking out his own arse, though it was the most detailed and convincing account I'd heard so far.

Could we hope Disney will help resurrect it at some point? Or did they set fire to every piece of work they've done after cancelling it?

And so I shan't be sharing my childhood with my own children.

Fuck, I felt a little part of me die.

You know, from the amount of interference this project got form LucasArts, I'm surprised it got anywhere near finished at all. Those guys are Free Radical must have been very dedicated to their job.

Edit:

ZippyDSMlee:
Someone who likes making money can buy the IP/assets then sell it. Someone should start a kickstarter and get crack'n on the IP rights transfer.

Wouldn't that involve basically buying Stars Wars off of Disney? If so, they aren't going to let it go for anything less than 4.1 billion dollars. That would be quite the kickstarter.

I would say a better bet is to gets lots of people to sing loud and strong about Battlefront III, so Disney knows that people want this game, and that it will sell. Then they might look into reviving the project.

**Snip**

99% complete is utter hogwash. At best it was considered "Feature Complete" (a Beta, in other words). I distinctly remember the 1 hour long video stating that the game had a lot more work to be done on it, especially in the optimization area. All these things take a long time to do properly.

It could be that LucasArts was indeed very evil and even stupid with their decision,. Keeping in mind that we only have one side of the story, as anybody ever considered the possibility that Battlefront III was utter garbage? Has anyone considered that maybe a lot of content maps and basic gameplay was implemented, but the game simply wasn't pulled together?

I realize that LucasArts' track record is pretty garbage as of late, but the fact is we know very little of what really happened to Battlefront III. In all likelihood, we will never know either. I'm not going to say that more press on the topic of Battlefront III is bad, because in reality it shows that there's still a lot of interest in seeing a sequel to the series, but take this shit with a grain of salt.

Who cares about Battlefront? This is was the final nail for Timesplitters. SAD DAYS.

HOW DARE YOU. Lucas arts deserves to burn in hell for giving this game the axe at such a late point in development. They wouldn't have needed a single cent on marketing as the game would've sold itself purely on the momentum from the last game.

OT: this sucks to hear about it being so far along and getting the axe, but meh old news otherwise, hopefully disney can find that data and someone with common fucking sense will want to fire it up.

Chances are that even if they wanted to and they stripped the star wars copywritten content out, they couldn't finish it and make any money off it now. It really depends on the details of their contract with lucasarts.

Wow, so I guess Disney is our last hope. Sure this is like using a defibrillator on a person whose been dead for a month, but if you believe in magic, miracles, and ice cream, the game may still see the light of day... or not. I don't know.

This is the single most depressing thing I have read in months, and I'm a nihilist at times.

If the project is going to get cancelled, why not dump all the work to date onto BitTorrent and let the fans finish it?

Jedi Knight 3

Wasn't there a Jedi Knight 3? Jedi Academy?
Or is this just another thing that's existence fans refuse to acknowledge?

I don't get why people hated Jedi Academy, the multiplayer was pretty fun and I enjoyed the combat (though I wish you could cut people to bits rather then just scratch them).

It also gave the world the "Re-Edited" versions:

They should have put what they had up on torrents

They were getting canned anyway.

They would be in all kinds of deep $@#& if they put what they had on a torrent. Illegal distribution, copyright infringement, that would break all kinds of laws and Lucas has teams of lawyers to deal with this.

"oops someone hacked our computers and stole the working prototype of the game, our bad."

This seems most appropriate to me:

Man, I was looking so forward to this. Thanks for bringing up the bad memories, sheesh.

What's the bet that Star Wars 1313 is just a lackluster 3rd person shooter?

Because people only want CoD/GoW... Non-two weapon shooters don't test well with our core demographic. Fuck X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter, Fuck Battlefront, Fuck Rogue Squadron. No what we want is something we can market to the frothing-mouthed bro-shooter crowd. Slap something "dark" together that feels more like BladeRunner or Ghost in the Shell than anything in the Star Wars universe so we can slap and Mature label on it and sell it to fuckwit teenagers.

Space Combat? There hasn't been a successful space combat game in years. What do you mean that's because we refuse to make them? If they were successful then we'd make them but there are no successful ones so we don't, you fucking dumbass. What do you mean people want to fly an X-Wing? What the fuck is an X-Wing?

Fuck you. Go make me Modern Warfare or Gears of War using the Star Wars license. And why don't you re-skin Dance Central with Han, Lando and Leia while you're at it because who gives a shit? Fucking chumps will by anything!

Now piss off, I'm going to check out my new Disney stock while my secretary blows me. Fuck you.

Sorry mate, but it's true. We've only got one side of the story. Battlefront III would sell, but would a massively scaled up version of Battlefront sell enough to be worth it? I have some serious reservations on that one. The Battlefront games are pretty solid, and they've obviously got a fan following, but it's no Battlefield 3 or Call of Duty in terms of popularity.

I'm stomping in frustration right about now :c

This news is 2 years old. But maybe Disney will give us all a christmas Gift by announcing it's resurrection!
If not then, they will just throw it in the Disney Vault full of Gold that only a select few get to go into to and laugh histerically at all else.

Hacking into the Disney vault?! I doubt anyone can.

darthvadernooooo.jpg

"You were the chosen one."

Et cetera.

Seriously, though, Disney... if you have any respect for the fans of Star Wars, you will buy this and make it as great as it was meant to be.

I've not been this sad since Capcom canceled Megaman Legends 3. Dammit I'm not a big shooter fan but the Battlefront games were some of the only shooters I loved to death. Damn you LucasArts, damn you to video game hell! >.<

Could someone please just quickly finish up the 1% and release it for, lets say, 30 bucks on Steam?

I have no idea if it would be worth it, but theres so many people bitching about the games cancellation, if even half of them bought it LucasArts would make a fair bit of dosh. Right?
