Honor Your Fallen XCOM Soldiers on Facebook

Honor Your Fallen XCOM Soldiers on Facebook

If you'd like to share the memory of your late XCOM operative with the world, 2K has you covered.

You're aiming for the achievement for carrying one soldier through every mission in the game. Now you're on the Temple Ship assault. This is it. Your most veteran Sniper, Aces "Snake Eyes" Ho Duck, has squadsight on a Sectopod when a nearby door opens. Out wanders another Sectopod with chest cannon at the ready. You try to find cover, but the cyberalien explodes it with a single shot. Then he takes a follow-up to wipe out Aces. You may never get a chance to see him on your in-game Memorial Wall, but thanks to 2K, you can now share your loss with the world.

In XCOM, each of your fallen soldiers is immortalized on your Memorial Wall which you can access in-game. However, if you lose your operative on the final mission, you never get the chance to see them show up on the wall. This Facebook app gives you a chance to honor your favorite lost soldiers from in-game, by allowing you to name your soldier, customize various attributes to best reflect their in-game character, as well as allowing for a brief eulogy.

Perusing the wall, a recurring theme is run-ins with Sectopods, with Chryssalids looking like a solid runner up. The wall certainly paints a grim portrait of the game, which is not surprising, given just how unforgiving it can be on anything but the easiest difficulty settings.

Catastrophic operative losses in XCOM are as old as the franchise itself, dating back to '94, and this memorial wall, while designed for the recent Enemy Unknown, could likely even be used to honor your even-longer-dead brothers in arms. So what's your XCOM horror story? Was your only loss a Rookie, too eager to prove themselves in combat against better-equipped aliens? Or was it your most experienced veteran caught off-guard, dying when your last save was too far back to justify loading? You can tell the world all about it right here.

May Biggson Gigglesworth of Africa ever rest in peace.

I remember my first game half of my squad got wiped out by chrysalids. My second game my main squad lasted the whole game on Normal, by the end they were all psychic power armour clad killbots.

My current playthrough on impossible, they are just hanging in there. Still bugs me you can't change nationality of your troops when you can change everything else

i'd rather make some hit contracts on those damn aliens with the hitman app.

REEEVVVAAAAANNNNGGGGGGEEE!(best served chilled)

I wanna check this out but facebook is derpin up.

Wonder how happy my friends will be with all their repeated brutal deaths.

This is awesome! It also reminds me I need to get back to playing more XCOM :P

Wait...
People have trouble with chrysalids?
Those things are just experience pinatas.

Not when you first encounter them, with shitty weapons and cardboard armor. Later on, yeah, they're pretty trivial, but sir, you come off as a grade A douchenozzle when you're this smug.
"Wait...people are having trouble with Smough and Ornstein? Those things are just experience pinatas."
"Wait...people are having trouble with kaizo romhacks of mario? Those things are just 1-up pinatas."

Side note: I've not had enough sleep today, so I might've misconstrued your post and bitched you out for nothing. Sorry if that's the case, future me will be very embarrassed.

It depends, once I modded the game so that any civilians that were killed always became zombies. Lets just say I never got very far from the landing zone before being swamped.

chrysalids have a major weak point of needing to get into melee range so yeah later on short of running around a corner into one they are easy. as others have mentioned though first meetings can be lethal.

i still remember the terror of holding a firing line on a highway overpassand seeing 3 chrysalids and 5 zombies advancing on my squad.
tatyana belkov call sign princess you will be sadly missed *salutes*

Well, they do have the tendency to walk straight across the map and one-hitting dudes. Overwatching will limit their ability to do so, but doing so during the first terror mission will lead to a slowness that conflicts with the sense of urgency stemming from the dropping number of civilians.

This is because they retain a memorable opening in this game. It's where most people really start taking losses.

Somehow I managed to keep the survivor of the very first (and incredibly railroaded) mission alive all the way to the end. Three of the initial recruits after that mission also made it there. They were my elite team when I needed some heavy hitters and every single one pulled through and remained standing afterward. Sadly the two medics I brought along died horribly while distracting enemy fire away from my favorite assault trooper so he could double tap the final boss in the face with an Alloy Cannon. Colonel 'Smokes' and Major 'Doc' will always be remembered as the greatest bullet sponges of the entire XCOM project.

Dammit. Maj. Ouija. You and your white hair shall ever be missed!
Ps. At least we captured that bastard muton and tortured every single bit of his body!

Let us all take a moment of silence to remember Duke "Nuke" Nukem (randomly assigned title after I named him btw). He fought bravely, yet he fell victim to a sectoid scoring a lucky bastard crit on Ironman mode...
