Xenoblade Successor Slated for Wii U

Xenoblade Successor Slated for Wii U

A new title from Monolith Soft adds giant mechs to JRPG combat.

If nothing else, you've got to give Monolith Soft points for consistency: No other JRPG developer so frequently includes the "xeno-" prefix in its titles or insists so often that giant, humanoid mechs must be part of the battle system. Take, for example, its new Wii U game. On the surface, this game shares a world, a battle system, and a general aesthetic with 2012's Xenoblade Chronicles, only now players can hop into enormous mech suits to do battle with larger foes. The game goes by the cryptic name of X for now, but looks like a bona fide part of the Xenoblade universe.

As far as content goes, the trailer has all the standard JRPG trappings. A spiky-haired protagonist wields a gun and a sword as the situation demands, as he and his party do battle with a variety of huge creatures. The twist comes later on, when he jumps into a giant mech battle suit, complete with energy weapons, flight, and vehicle transformation. That ought to mix things up a bit.

Kunihiko Tanaka of the Xenosaga series will provide character designs, and Hiroyuki Sawano, a popular Japanese TV composer, will tackle the score. If you liked the original Xenoblade Chronicles, X is a title to watch. If Monolith Soft doesn't keep the old tradition of battle mechs in JRPGs alive, who will?

Oh hell yes.

If it's ANYTHING like Xenoblade, this is gonna be good.

How good? Um, it might be the reason I buy a Wii U.

I need to get a copy of the original Xenoblade, but it's sold out everywhere.

Jesus that Mech there looks awesome.

Just one down the grinding a bit and we're good to go, I love Xenoblade chronicles but I just never had the time to get anywhere!

So... it's Xenoblade Chronicles with mecha suits?

I SO WANT THIIIIIIIIS!!!!
Xenoblade was so awesome, so if they keep all the good parts and just tweak the few bad parts a little? GIVE IT TO MEEEEEE!!!

Goddammit Nintendo, now you're really making me want to go out and buy a Wii U.

I haven't finished Xenoblade Chronicles yet, but I think it's fantastic so far. Yay for a successor, a reason to buy the WiiU. Might not be enough, but it is a reason.

Never played too much of Xenoblade Chronicles, but a good JRPG is always welcome! One more reason to get a Wii-U!

Dammit, I think I found my reason for buying a wiiU. I'll miss my money but I have no regrets.

My friend told me about this when I was going home today. Holy crap I didn't expect it to look this good. I want this SO much!.

One of these days I just might have to get into JRPGs.
It's always a party with Funzo Flying Sword Wielding Mechs!

Same here! Seriously I HEART Xenoblade Chroncile and I was already sold with the better graphic, refine combats and bigger monsters but a mech suit you can pliot into battle which can also transforms???

Well it still going to be a while for its release so I can I still got time wheather to buy the WiiU just to get that game alone!

Wait wait wait wait.... wait. Is that spoiler a real thing? If not I will be a very unhappy person now.

OT: Technically haven't played Xenoblade but seeing as a lot of people seem to like it as the rpg it is then I'm all for more good games being made

I'm 7 hours into Xenoblade and.. well. The sidequests are a bore, the game is too much mmo-y, the combat so far hasn't been very exciting and the story is pretty standard.

Why do people love this game so much? Does it get better like 30 hours in?

I'm in about the same situation. If it's really as great as people say, I'm not averse to investing a few dozen hours in it, especially because the sequel(?) looks pretty cool. But so far, it seems to be a lot of grinding and grappling with an unhelpful interface. Is there a point at which the game "clicks?"

With all the Wii-U announcements today, I too am having a good day!

Hell, Captcha seems to be excited too! (from looking at your post)

That looked like there were player names listed in the game so it seems to be online multiplayer.

The rule of thumb with Xenoblade is to play to at least the Bionis leg. Generally the game's very big on scenery porn and it doesn't get going with that until you reach that point.

The sad thing is that the game doesn't really even try to mask the grinding. There are several quest givers who give you 4-5 different "slay X monsters or collect X items" straight up.

One of my friends also played Xenoblade. He didn't really bother to pick up the side quests etc. since he found them tiresome, but that left him underleveled for most boss encounters which meant that he had to go back and do those sidequests to level up enough for the encounter.
I am, on the other hand, in a situation where I try to do most sidequests that don't require me to go too much out of my way (even if it's quite a chore)... and I am overleveled in every boss encounter, smacking the monster around without no real danger.

I really hope this isn't the same as "Final Fantasy XIII will get better 30 hours into the game". I will most likely keep playing Xenoblade a while more but I don't see anything changing unless the battle encounter design changes drastically, they introduce more interesting combat mechanics or the story will make a turnaround.

To avoid completely bashing the game, I have to say that the world is cool, in terms that the people are living on a dead god.

I guess people in the US will need to start writing localization petitions now.
Maybe if we start early, we can avoid the mess that happened with Xenoblade Chronicles.

If this game lets me strip all of my characters so they fight in their underwear, it's a day one buy for me.

Goddamnit Monolithsoft! You just gotta go and solve the only real problem I had with Xenoblade (the ugly character design) and give me a reason to buy a WiiU... up yours monolithsoft!

Though hopefully Nintendo won't be as coy about releasing this one in NA.

Yes, it is happening.

OT: I hope this comes to the US. Since it was on the US ND feed I'm assuming theres gonna be no issue.

Guess i'm gonna get a Wii U. I gave up on Monolith after Xenosaga, Xenoblade brought me back and as long as this game plays more like Blade than Saga i'll be happy

In that case I'm guessing you never played Xenosaga 3... which was frickin amazing! Still had a ton of cutscenes and the like but it also had tons of gameplay, a ton of great boss battles and (for the first time ever) actually fun mecha battles.

Correct i didnt play 3 because by that part i hated everything about the game. The boring boss battles that took hours and had no fun element were high on the list but more than anything i hated the parade of gonks that passed for my party, Chaos and Momo especially. Bad enough to have characters like children treated as adults by everyone around them but when they look like freakish toy children it becomes impossbile to have any care or interest in their fate. When i read that originally the 'Little Master' was going to become an adult in Ep 2 but that was cut and they decided to keep him a child i think that about did it for me.

/rant off. Sorry man nothing personal i just had my expectations (from playing Xenogears first time round) brutally crushed by that franchise.
