U.S. Senator Says Videogames Are Worse Than Guns

Andy, you ruined a decent piece with your "unfettered access to Semi-Automatic rifles" comment. Unless you want everyone to wield bolt-actions, everything is pretty much semi-automatic. There is no difference between a political group going after these types of guns or videogames, it's an idiotic argument either way.

ah... politics.

A career path where you can be completely and utterly batshit insane and no-one will care.

Unless you screw up of course, then you'll be fired and be granted a generous severance package.

Politics, yum.

I'm 38, a gamer, and I vote.

And there are a lot more of us then they realize.

The moment I saw the name "Lamar Alexander", any outrage and shock I had was gone.

Folks, Lamar puts his foot in his mouth so many times he's got shoelace imprints on his tongue. Nothing new for this beyond out of touch codger, really, so I can't get mad at him.

Tanis:
Republicans say...
WE WANT LESS GOVERNMENT!

Republicans do...
WE'RE GONNA PUT GOVERNMENT IN STUFF WE DON'T LIKE.
-But don't you DARE do the same, ya evil nazi.

Republicans think they lost both presidential elections because of 'voter fraud' or 'Americans are lazy/stupid/too non-white.

The REAL reason they lost is because their members keep opening up their mouths and are legitimately raping themselves as their words go on a series of tubes to the internet.

Guess that's what happens when you're the party of science deniers, six-degrees-of-Nazi-separation, homophobia, gynophobia, xenophobia, and just plain stupid.

I love being a republican on this website. I get to see all the funny generalizations that Obama-nazis make about republicans. ( see what I did there? Generalizations are great!). I registered republican because 1) I like guns. Lots of guns. Big guns. 2) because I can vote in primaries and have a miniscule chance of keeping a blubbering idiot out of the elections (not all of us are homophobic, xenophobic, believe the world was created 6000 years ago, or stupid).

But alas I am torn here. On one hand I love guns and I want to support the NRA getting in the way of restrictions ( I live in Cali, we already have enough firearm restrictions. Hell one of our representatives has tried twice to pass legislation on Airsoft guns). But on the other hand I love video games just as much if not more. And the NRA seems to want to keep saying that video games are the problem on national tv... If only the few idiots weren't in positions of power.

Everytime I see a story like this I think: Thank god that in 30 years crap like this will cease to be spewed from the mouths of our leaders.

"But the First Amendment limits what we can do about videogames

Wasnt there an episode of southpark with exactly that wording?

Sorry. Not Exactly. But it was close.

1. Its Obama-bot.
2. Well.. I don't really have a number 2.

The escapist has single handedly changed me from a Liberal to a Centrist because of all the liberal douchebags and "hurr durr misogyny, homophobia, and guns everywhere!" crap that gets spewed everyday.

Though I could never really be a republican due to what Tanis (the guy you quoted) said being 100% true as well.

Proving once more that the gun lobby has more money than the video game lobby. Nothing new here.

It's difficult for the rest of us to understand and accept that when the elected representatives of the party are so far out there. I think all sides would benefit greatly from reining in the crazies in their respective camps and putting more level headed people into office.

I'd have a lot less hostility toward the Republican party if their representatives were more "hey, maybe we should work on paying down the debt when we get the chance" and less "BAN VIDEO GAMES FOR JESUS!"

So what?

Seriously, somebody said something, big fucking deal.

6th And Silver:
Gee, an old guy who likes the NRA has something ridiculous to say about videogames?

Well stop the fuckin' presses.

I think the issue isn't that this is just a random somebody, it's that this is an elected US senator.

That means we do have a bit of a situation here...

When one realises the power this man holds by his voice or decision making process alone we should be more than concerned. I'm not concerned because he will try to limit access to a medium I enjoy but because he will apply that same type of arbitrary logical gymnastics to OTHER decisions. Decisions that could have far more importance than just electronic media. In a first past the post system of decision making his single vote could change policy.

This is the price of living longer lives, all the old dinosaurs are still stomping around, scared shitless of all these new fangled technologies.

Hey Senator.. I'll make you a deal, I'll concede life begins at conception if you'll concede it should end when you're about 60.

As an Englishman, whenever I see something like this I feel alot better about the politicians in my country.

I once got a bruise after I dropped a videogame box on my toe. Dangerous stuff, man.

"I think videogames [sic] is a bigger problem than guns, because videogames affect people," he said.

And guns don't!?!

I just....ARGHHHH!

My brain!

The stupidity is hurting me!

Make the bad man go away!!! D:

No Name That Party game today, Andy? Progress.

Ugh, here comes the idiotic guns vs games arguments. I mean, the guys is a moron. He clearly has an agenda that would make him favor guns over video games, coupled with the fact that he is 100 years old. I have to say though, it's kind of laughable that he would get accused of blindly following his agenda when this article also follows it's own agenda of blindly blaming guns. Now I guess I can expect the large influx of people who think looking at statistics will tell them how good or bad a society is. Either way, this old man is stupid. Though, as he said, both guns and video games are protected by the constitution. I'm grateful, to be honest.

Breaking news: politician says something stupid.

Stay tuned later tonight for coverage of water being wet.

Stereotypes exist for a reason. The republican platform generally runs on homophobia, techno-phobia and christian fundamentalism. Does it represent everyone who leans right? No. But it does represent the vast majority of whom you're voting for and the most vocal portion of the republican base. Last year I saw more "Obama's war on religion, get prayer in our schools, kill all the brown and gay people" rallies than I can count within driving distance and I live in a blue state. Also lets not kid ourselves and pretend that one side is more nazi-esque than the other. Both parties want to push this country toward fascism.

Neronium:
Look on the bright side, in two years we have elections for the House and the Senate so we have a chance to get rid of these idiots and replace them with new idiots; the new idiots often being as stupid or even stupider than the last ones were. Honestly surprised it wasn't a Californian senator for once though.
Heck the only joke I could say about video games killing people is if you beat someone to death with an original Xbox controller.

I am down for $100 saying he gets elected again.

It seems like the politicians idiocy is affecting you, therefore a big problem.

Political idiocy should be band.

Big fucking chance of that happening

I know my government is capable of saying really stupid and ignorant shit, but that really tops everything.

Political idiocy should be banned since it can cause aneurysms from the stupid rays.

It's a nice thought, but I don't see that happening either. Such a shame. :/

Let me list of things that are genuinely wrong with the world.

-Oppression
-Corporate greed
-The existence of money
-Politics
-Exploitation
-Discrimination
-Stigma towards those treated for mental illness
-Judgement
-Lenient justice

Now for a couple of things that aren't wrong.
-The existence of firearms
-Freedom of speech
-Artistic expression

The problem isn't video games or guns, it's how the world works.
But we might be too lazy to fix that, so let's just blame everything else to sleep better at night.

Old people are so adorable.

Some of them I think you could dangle an xbox case in front of their eyes and they'd run for the hills.

I would like to see less glorification of the military and guns in my games sure, but I don't get to make that call about what is allowed to be in media, as long as people in real life, in movies, in books and television still see using a gun in everyday life as acceptable. I don't like alot of things in games. To which others should reply; "...And?"

So, yeah, shut up. Stop tugging at the heartstrings of people who are victim to gun violence by giving them a strawman to light on fire. It does nothing.

Shooting imaginary guns: Affects people.

Shooting actual guns: Does not affect people.

This statement brought to you by NRA: Shooting Range.

*claps* pretty much all the people who put guys like this in office so of course they are not going to bite the hand that feeds them.

Senator....Kindly Shut up...You're older than dirt...what do you know about gaming...If this is someway to try and prevent the gun ban just so you can keep your M4 assault rifle, please...be quiet...

Ugh.

I literally want to scream.

What he says: "I hate games"
What he means: "I hate what is topical so as to deflect people from looking at mah guns!"

A game never killed someone.
Any time a person COMPLAINS about the 1st amendment limiting what they can do its scary. They are probably going to do something like the Hays Code for games if they can.

Please let my own Country NOT DO THAT. God I may claim Canadian leaders are nuts but NOT that nuts.

"We must avoid do anything practical!"
I wonder if the Founding Fathers weep when they see what their nation has become.

Guns don't affect people. Bullets affect people.

More seriously, fucking of course video games affect people. We'd have a pretty damned weak argument on the "games are art" front if they didn't. Fuckwit.

Gizmo1990:

Same here. But then I remember that our politicians are stupid in much more evil ways.

So, if I were to perform an outrageous act of violence upon this man, I should use a video game rather than a gun?

(Disclaimer: I have no intention of hurting anyone. I am a huggly person. <3)

Well, somebody go tell those twenty kids from Sandy Hook that they can stop being dead- after all, it's video games that affect people, not guns.

Oh hey, look, there was a shooting in Phoenix today with one dead and two injured, and the main suspect is a white man in his mid-60's. MUST BE THEM VIDJA GAEYMS

But then again, this is a group that keeps rumbling about "Second Amendment solutions". Life is sacred- so long as it votes the same way they do.

Good grief; that gif is getting a workout this week! Are people trying to see if they can find a fail-fuelled power source or something?

When every piece of research these guys support is either half assed or misrepresented, it's safe to say that they are only in it because they're bought by the NRA. What I mean with misrepresented it that there's a study out there that they claim is saying that videogames cause kids to become violent. However, the study ACTUALLY says that there are worse culprits out there ... mainly access to guns. Still, like with the second amendment, they only care about the part they like, twisting the source and lying through their teeth.
