U.S. Senator Says Videogames Are Worse Than Guns

Ranorak:
He's right though, those edges of the discs, they can kill a man!
Not to mention the lethal side effects of the plastic wrapper.

Don't forget about putting disc in the microwave for 2-6 minutes that can cause a nice explosion.

In related news: U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander is an idiot.

The sheer audacity that an elected official claiming to be a constitutional literalist would say "unfortunately the first amendment limits what we can do". The words not are here. Why is happening?

I had prepared a large paragraph about a literal interpretation of the 2nd amendment that would require you to participate in active service or be on standby in a military or law enforcement group on the national, state, or local level to ensure personal gun ownership rights, but I'd like to stick to the important issues here. There's just no way that you can say that entertainment is somehow dangerous to society.

Being born before reasoning does not allow you to simply ignore its existence.

How do people with so low an order of intelligence get elected to office? And as a Senator, supposedly the house of "elder statesmen"? I no longer wonder why the economy is a wreck, why they can't come up with a reasonable plan for crime prevention and a bunch of other stuff, it's because of morons like this.

Who are the shit-dicks that voted this fucktart in?
I mean seriously. If video games make people killers, why don't strategy games make me the leader of sweeden in the 1700s?

Well guns totally don't effect people. Hot lead ripping through their body effects people. And video games totally do effect people. THye uhhh... make us mad... when we lose at something... and like make want to... well make some people... well make some people with varying degrees of already significant mental trauma want to... you do stuff... IT"S TOTALLY THE SAME.

Video games are bigger problem because they affect people?

EVERYTHING AFFECTS PEOPLE!

Guns affect people too. They kill them.

We have another case of an old man stuck in his ways, talking about things he knows nothing about.

Republicans say...
WE WANT LESS GOVERNMENT!

Republicans do...
WE'RE GONNA PUT GOVERNMENT IN STUFF WE DON'T LIKE.
-But don't you DARE do the same, ya evil nazi.

Republicans think they lost both presidential elections because of 'voter fraud' or 'Americans are lazy/stupid/too non-white.

The REAL reason they lost is because their members keep opening up their mouths and are legitimately raping themselves as their words go on a series of tubes to the internet.

Guess that's what happens when you're the party of science deniers, six-degrees-of-Nazi-separation, homophobia, gynophobia, xenophobia, and just plain stupid.

I love being a republican on this website. I get to see all the funny generalizations that Obama-nazis make about republicans. ( see what I did there? Generalizations are great!). I registered republican because 1) I like guns. Lots of guns. Big guns. 2) because I can vote in primaries and have a miniscule chance of keeping a blubbering idiot out of the elections (not all of us are homophobic, xenophobic, believe the world was created 6000 years ago, or stupid).

Honestly if guns are all that's making you a Republican, why do you stay? It's not like us Democrats are all out to ban guns and our primaries allow to vote someone competent INTO office rather than keep those rabid fundamentalists out. The reason that those idiots keep coming to power is because of the conservative foundation of the Republican party. It's not enough that "I just wanna collect guns" (I assume that's all you intend to do with them?). Nope is has to be a right, guaranteed by the infallible founding fathers. And ANY law that might take a gun away from ANYone is un-American. We can't even enforce the gun laws we have now because NRA lapdogs like this guy gutted Federal reinforcement and oversight. Look up all the shootings in Chicago in the past week alone. Do you think that's because "when we make guns criminal, only the criminals will have guns?" Or might it be because the the gun laws OUTside the city are incredibly lax and they can just obtain them elsewhere? Or how about all the social programs to combat the poverty that leads to gangs and violent crime in the first place? The Republican establishment barely tolerates the broken system we have now (which they broke) and won't even entertain the possibility of reform them in any way besides cutting their funding. You can't afford to be a one issue voter when there are only two parties that have any real say in how this country is run.

I'm not going to pretend Democrats are perfect or all completely sane, and I'm not going to patronize you by pretending it wouldn't be a bitch for you to give up assault weapons. I am saying that the philosophy behind the Democratic party is more sound. With us it's looking forward, for your party it's looking back. Yes regulating nerf guns is overkill, but do you think that's going to do more damage in the long run than outlawing abortions or teaching creationism and abstinence only in schools? You may not support those things, but that doesn't matter as long as your candidates have to pander to the far right just to get a nomination. Reason is not basis for their views and never will be. Why don't you give us a chance?

This just in, GOP senators have yet to update their talking points from 1992.

They didnt just let him walk away free after saying something idiotic like this right? RIGHT? Theres no way people get paid for this.

DVS BSTrD:
Okay let's try an experiment: Who would you be more likely to hand over your money to?
Someone pointing a videogame at you, or someone pointing a gun at you?

Depends on the video game, some of them are pretty scary. I mean, imagine if someone pointed Amnesia at you.

Yes because the amount of times I've heard of a store being held up with a Wii Remote or mass murder being committed with a copy of Professor Layton is so large. Now if I was to go into school waving around a hunting rifle and a PS3, which would frighten more people?

Its getting tirering to say what's wrong with this and how dumb these people are.

Gaming industry make the change yourselves aqnd lobby like the nra does. Just fight fire with fire nad be done.

Shadowstar38:
I'm American. And I apologize for nothing. This man is clearly insane.

I'm borrowing this for later if that's okay with you.

OT: What is there to be said that hasn't already? This man is just scapegoating.

Do you think the good senator would care what game it was?

That was pure, unbridled stupidity. I am now dumber for having heard that.

"I think videogames [sic] is a bigger problem than guns, because videogames affect people," he said.

Actually, he's right here. They are great for stress relief.

I seriously don't understand these people's problem. Playing a game (as we all know) is essentially just staring at a screen and pressing buttons/moving a joystick. If that's all it takes to make a person dangerously psycho we better cordon off Hollywood with a military blockade because all those actors and stunt doubles that use weapon props for filming action scenes have more than likely completely lost it long ago - and exercised while they did it.

How about both sides stop trying to take things from other and actually get some functional mental healthcare going in this country and dealing with the social-economic woes of the inner-city ghettos?

TornadoADV:

Yeah I'm cool with that.

and dealing with the social-economic woes of the inner-city ghettos?

Fuck no.

Those people are beyond help.

The best we can hope for is that they keep killing each other and never get the idea to leave the ghetto.

An idiot said something stupid?

Well I never.

If we're talking about how effective something is at motivating people to go outside and excercise, than yes, videogames are worse than guns.

If we're talking about how effective something is at inspiring and enableing someone to walk into a crowded area and open fire without discretion, than no, videogames are not worse than guns.

Well, common sense has again been proven to be anything but common.

Not a good example. Amnesia is scary, but hardly dangerous.

Better to use Sonic Free Riders instead. That game is guaranteed to drive anyone within a 4m radius into a ravenous berserk murdermachine. I'd hand over my money just to get it away from me. I'd rather fellate a gunbarrel while liberally pulling the trigger than be affected by that abomination.

Or maybe he just meant that videogames are worse than guns because guns are way better at killing people. Death by game is inhumanely slow.

Solution: make games more lethal. Exploding consoles that eject razorsharp game discs at lethal velocities! Controllers that deliver lethal electrical shocks! Demos that comes with paid on-disc dlc! Genius!

Guns don't kill people. People who play video games kill people. With Guns.

Wait so does this mean I have an "arsenal" instead of a "collection" of video games? Cause that sounds pretty cool.
Believe me I tried, throwing my copy of Infamous 2 did nothing but get me multiple restraining orders.

OT: Hehe, oh you clueless senators.

"But the First Amendment limits what we can do about videogames and the Second Amendment to the Constitution limits what we can do about guns."

Am I the only one here who heard that line as "Goddamn Bill of Rights keeps getting in my way!", because that scares me. Especially days after the military scared the crap out of people by flying helicopters over residential areas of several cities and firing blank machine gun rounds.

But alas I am torn here. On one hand I love guns and I want to support the NRA getting in the way of restrictions ( I live in Cali, we already have enough firearm restrictions. Hell one of our representatives has tried twice to pass legislation on Airsoft guns). But on the other hand I love video games just as much if not more. And the NRA seems to want to keep saying that video games are the problem on national tv... If only the few idiots weren't in positions of power.

You're not the only one here. While I classify myself more as a libertarian, I too am registered as a Republican so I can vote in the primaries (and I too like guns :D).

But I don't think we should have to choose between one or the other. Senseless violence has been around far longer than guns or video games. Neither are the cause of the problem. Unfortunately, it's very hard to get that across to some people...

I think I should bring up Ron Perlman's monologue from Fallout 3...

"Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything: from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage..."

In short, banning guns or video games won't make the problem go away.

Kroxile:
Everytime I see a story like this I think: Thank god that in 30 years crap like this will cease to be spewed from the mouths of our leaders.

Huh? So stupidity is set to be eradicated by 2043? How's that again?

Was that guy born sounding that stupid or do the NRA lobby dbags have to shove rolls of $100 bills up his ass to make him do that.

I wonder how much it would cost to make him say: "I think fish have a better understanding of American business and I for one welcome our future underwater overlords."

Or are they not paying him enough? He can't possibly think what he said was logical and you can kind of tell by the way he's acting that he knows he sounds like an idiot. Can you just phone it in if the lobby isn't paying you enough?

He's clearly a biased old fool. Why is it people like him get to stay in office, when others like Obama are forced out after a certain amount of time?

This is why we need some god damn term limits. Seriously, the phrase "career politician" shouldn't be a fucking THING. I believe the term used to be Public fucking Servant, you should not be able to build a god damn fortune off of time spent in politics "serving" the public.

We also need a third party....

Seriously though, THIS is 100% why the Republicans lost. Look at the fucking yahoos we have to work with! All we want are some sensibly minded people with fiscally conservative policies to promote economic growth, and instead we get Dickless the Clown over here with the NRA so far up his ass that they need sperlunking equipment, and lets not forget his budies, Mr. WomenDon'tGetPregnantFromLegitimateRape and his ever contrarian neighbor, Mr. IfAWomanGetsPregnantDueToRapeIt'sGod'sWill. And wasn't there another douche saying something like "victims of rape actually end up enjoying it"? Or was it the brain-numbingly stupid argument of "rape victims have it coming due to the way they dress/behave"?

There are plenty of conservatives in America, but the Republicans don't represent them. Seriously, as a conservative I just can't agree with 90% of the left's beliefs. But then I look to the "leaders" on my side and say "God, you guys are fucking nuts!" The hell am I supposed to do? Played out as it is, I can only quote Professor Farnsworth: "I don't want to live on this planet anymore."

Give me a break. How many people were killed by guns in 2012. Now how many people were killed by video games in 2012? Big freaking difference isn't it? This is why I'm a democrat. Stricter gun laws people.

Naw bro, stop trying to take away people's things and they won't act like cornered animals. Try address the real issue, why crime is happening in the first place.

Don't get me wrong TornadoADV. I'm not for banning all guns. I know several people with hunting rifles for different types of game depending on the season. I myself have a rifle for home defense. I just don't see the need for automatic weapons and high capacity clips to be in the hands of average joe's.

I mean seriously, do you really need an AK-47 for "home defense". A short distance shotgun does just fine and won't penetrate your home's walls and possible injure innocent people.

As far as crime happening in the first place, I think a ban on all guns would do this country good.

There I said it. The argument is that bad guys will always get their guns anyway, but good citizens with legally owned guns are there to protect people, right? When have you ever heard of a good citizen gun owner fighting off some lunatic carrying an automatic machine gun with their 9mm pistol?

Never happens. All you hear about is a terrible shooting with so many innocent people killed. (Which personally makes me sick, as I could never do anything like that to any living thing.)

So why do more guns in more hands make us safer? I beg you to give me a reason.

No hate against you at all TornadoADV, i just have a strong opinion on the subject.

He looks like he has clearly played plenty of video games in his time.

He talks about limitations. Isnt is like a paradox or a contradiction or something that you can be limited to something called an "amendment".

I'm not American can someone please correct me if i'm wrong on this?

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, sir. But in the end this senator is simply trying to shift the blame of death from actual guns that caused the death to video games which he feels were a cause of the person picking up the gun.
