U.S. Senator Says Videogames Are Worse Than Guns

TecnoMonkey:
I think getting shot in the face affects people more than playing video games.

As horrible as it is, I had a good laugh at this. I can imagine someone saying this with a deadpan expression.

So, while the amount of people playing games is somewhere in the high millions, can we expect a good million cases of mass killings, Mister Republican? Meanwhile, how about you actually answer the question you were given, rather than changing the subject to something, I can assure you, is completely unrelated. But then, we disagree on a lot of things, don't we?

I'm not trying to defend these remarks, but at least he realizes he is limited in what he can do. The writer of the article is pushing his own agenda with remarks like "unfettered access to semi-automatic rifles" which is not true. Rifles were used in about 1% of murders, about the same amount as baseball bats. Banning rifles will accomplish nothing, and the politicians know it. Violent video games and movies probably have an affect on already deranged individuals, but why should all the normal people have to be punished for what the crazy people do?

Agreed, but politicians get elected because they can side step the real issues and shift the public's focus to something much less important. :)

Sometimes I despise being an American. I love the idea of America but lately the rulers of this country have been turning it into a royal f.cking mess. We could be so much better.

Oh dear. I apologize for posting on this same position but I can't help it.

OT: gsf1200, I'm not sure what country you live in. I live in the USA. I know a few places personally that I can get fully automatic weapons without much hassle. That's the problem.

Sure people can kill with a 5 shot semi auto rifle just like they can with a 30 shot AK-47, but why make it that easy for them? Shouldn't we at the very least limit the types of guns people can own in this country (USA)?

"...But with the right contributions, some time next year I may find that the biggest threat to this country is maple syrup. That's right, MAPLE SYRUP! Yeah, you heard me, Vermont... I expect to hear some purse strings loosening."

Blaming video games is a winner the way the nation is polling.

The republicans think that going with the polls will win elections, even if they lose any principles they ever had. This alienates certain members of their base and will drive the GOP into the abyss.

All they have to do is say yes to freedom and not attack the constitution and that might actually fucking inspire someone.

I am reminded of a certain quote from tech in Civ 5, if you chase two rabbits you will lose them both. I think this could apply here.

DrunkOnEstus:
In summation: elected official in love with guns points fingers at other topics to keep the heat off of the guns, and begrudgingly points to the first amendment as some kind of annoying block that prevents him from the censorship he wants. Very classy.

And on the other hand you have several other elected officials who absolutely hate guns pointing at the Second Amendment as some kind of annoying block that prevents him from getting rid of the objects of his hate...so it's a wash and in the end everyone loses.

Yes, what this guy is saying is absolutely stupid and no one should be paying attention to any of these sorry sacks of shit, and by that I mean any politician that opens his mouth ever.

Give me a break. How many people were killed by guns in 2012. Now how many people were killed by video games in 2012? Big freaking difference isn't it? This is why I'm a democrat. Stricter gun laws people.

Naw bro, stop trying to take away people's things and they won't act like cornered animals. Try address the real issue, why crime is happening in the first place.

Don't get me wrong TornadoADV. I'm not for banning all guns. I know several people with hunting rifles for different types of game depending on the season. I myself have a rifle for home defense. I just don't see the need for automatic weapons and high capacity clips to be in the hands of average joe's.

I mean seriously, do you really need an AK-47 for "home defense". A short distance shotgun does just fine and won't penetrate your home's walls and possible injure innocent people.

As far as crime happening in the first place, I think a ban on all guns would do this country good.

There I said it. The argument is that bad guys will always get their guns anyway, but good citizens with legally owned guns are there to protect people, right? When have you ever heard of a good citizen gun owner fighting off some lunatic carrying an automatic machine gun with their 9mm pistol?

Never happens. All you hear about is a terrible shooting with so many innocent people killed. (Which personally makes me sick, as I could never do anything like that to any living thing.)

So why do more guns in more hands make us safer? I beg you to give me a reason.

No hate against you at all TornadoADV, i just have a strong opinion on the subject.

Fully automatic weapons have been banned since 1986. You can still buy fully automatic weapons made before then, but they carry price tags in the range of $20,000+ on a good day BEFORE all this new brewup about gun laws. The majority of bolt action hunting rifles operate in calibers well above that of the 5.56mm(.223) and the 7.62mm short round you see in semiautomatic assault rifles.

Really, unless they have a Class 3 license you should call the BATFE, fully auto is banned since 1934. You not reporting this could be misconstrued as a accessory after the fact.

Also have you ever filled out a 4473? If you haven't you shouldn't talk about easily getting guns.

Ne1butme:
Clearly, there were no mass shootings prior to the release of Pong. And if there were any, it must have been SpaceWar's fault.

I giggled more than I should have at this.

In all honesty, it's not the hate against video games that gets me riled up. Oh no, that passed long ago, the Republicans are just people that trail along the sidelines picking up snippets of stuff the was popular once and try to use it to make themselves look good. Really, if it were just this I'd not care at all.

What REALLY gets me is that now he's saying games, and thus gamers, are much worse than gun nuts. Wow. Excuse me for just sitting in my house occasionally getting into debates. That's obviously ruining lives a great deal more permanently than being shot or anything. I mean Christ, even witnessing a shooting scars you. Just because video games are violent, it doesn't mean people learn from them. if anyone does, it's because they are fricken' neanderthals who really shouldn't be allowed outside their cages.

It's a good thing these people are ignored, else this movement would actually be listened to. Then we'd be stuck in the same state games-wise as north korea, and if that happens I may just get more violent towards my government than a gun nut.

He's right you know. Everyday more then a hundred Politician Ninja's are murdered by Game Ninja's, using the discs as shuriken and blocking oncoming shuriken with their game cases.

There's a reason why we still use DVD's, because you get 3 in an FF13 case. That's three times the shuriken for the single price of a Blu-Ray shuriken. Ever wonder why Game Cube's games were so small? Simple. To hide them more easily. Cartidges used to be used in the olde days, but they were just to clunky and it didn't feel right. Sure they had less time to load, but you couldn't use them to reflect sunlight to blind enemy ninjas.

Seriously though, could this guy be any stupider? Gah, even if he tries to connect games to these murders, how many of them had a gun rather then a controller?

TornadoADV, indeed full auto rifles have been banned for close to 3 decades. However, any semi automatic rifle can be made full auto very easily. All you have to do is shave down the firing pin, or even easier, place a rubber band on a specific mechanism in the gun.

That's how ridiculously easy it to get a full auto gun here. That's why I feel like we need stricter gun laws.

To aelreth, you misunderstood me. I don't know anyone with a fully automatic rifle, but the people I know know how to make their rifles full auto (it's fairly simple actually) and I don't want them or anyone else to do that. I never want to own a fully automatic weapon myself. I'm actually planning to sell my rifle as I feel it is too much for home defense.

I'm simply stating that anyone who does research can figure out how to turn a semi-auto rifle into a fully-auto rifle fairly easily. That's why I think that these types of rifles should be banned.

Once again, I do not condone automatic rifles or heavy caliber machine guns.

How many calibers do you really need to take down some poor weak intruder?

oh wow..the stupid levels...heres my take on the issue

is it possible a videogame could inspire a psycho to kill?..YES
is it possible the bible could inspire a psycho to kill?...YES

will you find america banning bibles or comparing them to guns?...NO

The only real advantage that guns have over video games is the fact that you are less likely to be called a faggot by a 12 year old at a gun range. But then again, there is the mute function.

bazaalmon:
Guns don't affect people! They're imaginary! Imaginary things can never be harmful! Just look at Unicorns; When's the last time a Unicorn speared anyone to death with their pointy horns?

My mother was killed by a unicorn you heartless...*runs away sobbing*

I can't remember all the ridiculous crap Sen. Alexander has been behind, but this is nothing surprising. Just frightening, since people think he's worth VOTING for.

Seriously, people like this just make me want to go out and reenact my favorite video games via shooting a bunch of people.

gsf1200:
The writer of the article is pushing his own agenda with remarks like "unfettered access to semi-automatic rifles" which is not true.

It is true. The next sentence:

Rifles were used in about 1% of murders, about the same amount as baseball bats.

Is not only untrue but also doesn't really do anything to rebut the notion that rifle access is unfettered.

Incidentally, homicide is less than 1% of all deaths in America. By the concept of significance, why should we even try and stop it? DUI fatalities are like half that number...Why bother trying to stop people from driving drunk?

We do limit the kind of guns people can get already. Whether we should do more is at issue here. Also, an AK-47 can be purchased in semi-automatic form. I am curious: are you sure you have access to a fully automatic weapon?

Callate:

Hmmm...Republicans as bottom feeders. Not quite "Burns as Goa'uld," but close.

When you talk about trolling you also have to pay your dues to the most professional trolls of them all - US senators.
i refuse to believe there are people THIS stupid.

Don't worry, the old cunt - and others like him - will all be dead soon.

Well, I mean, if you were to count all of the virtual killings there have been with Call of Duty, Halo, CS and the like then I suppose video games kind of dwarf all those, you know, real life killings.

It's science!

No matter how many virtual bullets or swords you put into a digital character you're not going to suddenly think it's a great idea in reality. Unless you're of unstable mind and if you're letting your unstable kid play games that clearly involve such things, maybe it's not the games fault then, maybe, JUST maybe it's the persons fault.

Gah are the babyboomers gone from power yet? cause i cant wait till they are, yes i can totally kill people with my games just like in that movie Stay Alive so be scared old man.

Darks63:
Gah are the babyboomers gone from power yet? cause i cant wait till they are, yes i can totally kill people with my games just like in that movie Stay Alive so be scared old man.

Actually, he's a touch old to be a baby boomer. And given the runs senators have, it'll be another 60 years before we have gotten rid of the baby boomers.

I've never heard of someone killed with a videogame, but this guy kind of makes me wonder how it would go down. I suppose breaking the disc and using the shrapnel as a knife of sorts would work, but then it stops being a game and just becomes a couple hunks of sharp plastic. Would he have a problem if we went all digital distribution on them?

A little bit more seriously, scapegoat what you don't understand, common practice for, well, a lot of people. The problem he'll have is that the next generation of voters, a lot of them are also gamers. If there were any truth to violent video games causing violent actions, we'd have seen increasing crime statistics rather than consistently lower crime statistics over the growing popularity of such games.

DVS BSTrD:
Okay let's try an experiment: Who would you be more likely to hand over your money to?
Someone pointing a videogame at you, or someone pointing a gun at you?

Depends, do I get to keep the game?

the doom cannon:

The reason Republicans cop so much shit is these are the people who are there representitives. If you want to stop the generalisations stop voting in old, racist, backwards old white men to office.

I just laughed. I wasn't even mad or remotely offended. To say such a thing is like saying adults who enjoy watching Pixar movies (or Toy Story 3) are pedophiles because the movies are meant for children. It's over the top silly and so misleading that you just can't really get offended by it. Still, it does concern me how people like this get elected.

You would think people would keep up with the times and do research but I guess they say things to get public reputation .. or. .. .. something. Because this isn't making us respect him at all.

Sweet cant wait to find out how it ends... oh wait it never did! Everey generation will condemn the next generation's entertainment medium as a destructive force that strips all morals and decency from the "young people"... Hey look at my dad - he told me that in his age(where the radio generation was at large) they said that all violence comes from violent programs on tv and violent movies so be ready to wait for those old farts to die out and live in peace... Also in europe it doesnt happen as much...

revjay:
In related news, a man walked into a crowded mall and really annoyed the shit out of like ten people when he started whipping video game discs at them. One man was heard to say, 'Dude hit me in the side of the head, I dropped my frappucino!" Lawyers were on hand to comfort the abused crowd and reports say the litigation will total in the billions of dollars when all is said and done.

Oh wow... am I fucked up for laughing at that?

Films affect people, music affects people, art affects people.

He has all the reasons to say that video games affect people just as much. However, like any other kind of art, putting a block on it is a violation of the most fundamental rights we have. And frankly, not EVERY kind of effect a piece of entertainment has will be malevolent. Good games can inspire, evoke and convey emotions just as much as a great painting can.

Remember the last time a piece of personal expression got burned? And by that I mean a book, books were burned.
Remember?

Alright, now let's ban the fucking guns.

Of course video games are more dangerous. How many hundreds of people are killed by game discs leaving their cases at high speed, piercing skin, shredding a person's muscles and internal organs and causing them to bleed to death? Oh wait, is that bullets? I forget.

Cecilthedarkknight_234:

Ranorak:
He's right though, those edges of the discs, they can kill a man!
Not to mention the lethal side effects of the plastic wrapper.

Don't forget about putting disc in the microwave for 2-6 minutes that can cause a nice explosion.

Why are these death-traps still for sale!

Will someone think about our children!
Who knows what they do when we leave them totally unsupervised, while we go to work!
You can't expect me to look after them and raise them!?

Jadak:

Kroxile:
Everytime I see a story like this I think: Thank god that in 30 years crap like this will cease to be spewed from the mouths of our leaders.

Huh? So stupidity is set to be eradicated by 2043? How's that again?

Not stupidity neccessarily, but all the old right wing nutjobs will be long dead by then and more of today's youth/people will be in their positions instead.

well thats given me a laugh thank you for that.
well according to fox news the other day americans have to defend themselves with assault rifles because "rampaging hordes will kick down their doors". you cant argue with that

What. Can you honestly say that? I genuinely have no idea how he can actually, tenably hold that belief. How is that the case, even in the most ridiculously twisted of circumstances, which these are not? Ugh.
