David Jaffe Lashes Out at CNN Anchor

Chairman Miaow:
You win points for killing prostitutes in GTA? I didn't even know there were points in GTA! I must really suck at it :(

That always amused me that they stated it that way. I know not every viewer is going to understand that GTA has more in it than a point system, but if they kept it accurate, they could have made it sound so much worse!

"You win cash prizes for murdering prostitutes, which you can then go spend on more guns and ammo to kill more people for more cash!"

You might even be able to throw rap under that bus with all the obsessions with cash and murder in the game.

[I always say the best way to disprove claims of violent video games causing violence is with a violent outburst.

I mean, yeah, Burnett is a troll among trolls, but we're not going to get people to take our medium very seriously when the industry leaders are having man-child tantrums on Twitter.[/quote]

My thoughts exactly. Jaffe isn't taking some kind of heroic stand; his rant is just a hate filled knee-jerk reaction towards Erin, not an intelligent argument as to why she's wrong.

This guy is not my idea of a champion for the debate. In "The Newsroom 2.0" parlance "Is this the best form of the argument?" and I don't think so. But I'm glad someone is getting some exposure seizing an opportunity to decry the BS in this tripe they're still peddling.

Blablahb:
Games are training simulators. That's why they immediatly made me a general when I joined the military and showed them my savegames from Command & Conquer.

Pish. Pish, I say!

A couple of decades of gaming really helped me rescue my kidnapped girlfriend from a machine-gun toting maniac and his army of thugs named after characters from classic kung-fu films. My experiences were likewise invaluable when raising a giant army of bloodthirsty orcs to wipe out the armies of humanity and claim the kingdom of Azeroth as my own. And let's not get started on all of the theme parks that I've built, the cities I've planned, and that period I spent remodelling the UK's entire transport system so that every available resource would be shipped to the absolute furthest-away recipient possible (because "Transport Tycoon" taught me that the longer you transport something, the more you get paid. It just makes sense.)

Waaghpowa:
I recall reading somewhere that the citizens of ancient Rome believed that Opera caused violence and murder. Society has always used convenient scapegoats with no evidence to support it.

Good on Jaffe for standing up to her and calling her out on her bullshit.

Even better, some ancient greek philosophers (I believe Aristotle was one of them) thought books were evil and should be burned because... They don't carry the same "weight" as oral speeches or something like that. Ironically, we only know this because it was recorded in, what else, writing.

Yeah, sometimes crazy scapegoats aren't limited to idiots.

Erin Burnett is a right wing, agenda driven slag.

Folks please note: This is CNN not FOX news reporting this garbage. A good sign that major media outlets care less about truth in journalism and more about inciting flame wars. In other words, ALL news channels are troll-bait and untrustworthy.

In a twist of irony:

It's like pigs are flying.

I uh.. what?

I've never seen this debate broadcast like this, and with this level of maturity ANYWHERE...

Kudos to this program, and kudos to Adam Sessler.

For fuck's sake. Just bin her, bin her now.

William Pollock gave provocative answers! LOL
He told that ignorant anchor a list of facts. Oh man.......

albino boo:
Congratulations Mr Jaffe you win PR screw up of the week. If the video gaming industry wants to counter the current issues it needs to get better organised and stop playing to the gallery of the hardcore gamers. The people you need to convince that games aren't a risk are just going to see some hipster launching a personal attack via twitter on someone they trust. If you want change people minds, you need to put your best suit and respectfully and forensically dissect the oppositions argument. Angry rants didn't work for the Tea Party and it isn't going to work for the gaming industry. The industry needs to sound like serious responsible people not some hipster ranting about capitalism.

I find it sad that you find what Jaffe said to be "hipster rambling" on Twitter. Saying something about it at all as a big name in the industry at all is a rare sight. Not even the big publishers like EA or Activision really have said anything to combat the current "violent games are bad" argument.

With today's technology and the fact that online news is much more relevant than televised news(both CNN and Faux News have been going through the lowest ratings they've seen in 20 years), David Jaffe can do the next best thing to yelling at her in person anytime he pleases. He can directly call her out online in a place she personally frequents, and he can have people do it over and over again with his one rant. He can also guarantee that a lot of major online news outlets will cover it. Gaming news isn't so small on the internet anymore.

Yup. Agreed. I give it 2 years before she makes the leap to FOX like Lou Dobbs before her, and Glenn Beck before him.

Agreed, that seemed like a calm, rational discussion to me.

I think what would be interesting is to take every news interview that features this topic involving game industry vets and social scientists and edit all of them together into a montage so we can send them to news outlets and say "WE'VE ALREADY ANSWERED THIS."

CardinalPiggles:
I have to completely agree with the good doctor. More control over guns AND games isn't a bad idea at all. I'd be happy knowing my younger brother, and maybe someday my children won't be able to play games that are so grotesque. I'd also be happy knowing people can't go out to the local shop and buy an M16.

Of course, these don't cause people to want to murder a whole bunch of innocents, but it can't hurt to have a little restriction on these things.

Also, it's funny how she is trying to argue with facts and then basically mocking him, what a bitch.

Response to part in bold: No, just no.

It starts with a "little restriction," then it grows and grows till it becomes, "1st amendment? What's that?" and "Bill of Rights? You don't need that."

That's an actual balanced and respectful discussion on violent video games... from Fox News! F***ing Fox News!!!

Someone send that news anchor a "Thank You for Actually Practicing Journalism" card.

Saying nothing about how the reporter's leading questions and dismissive attitude towards the answers the expert gave, they prefaced the interview with a review of possible job losses from gun manufacturers resulting from an assault weapons ban? So many problems with this.

They harp about job losses from gun manufacturers but don't even acknowledge job losses that banning violent video games would possibly result in despite the games industry being massively larger than the numbers cited there for gun companies. They don't talk about the possibility of gun manufacturers retooling their factories to produce weapons that do conform to these restrictions, like car manufacturers conform to emissions standards. Finally, how callous to suggest that people's jobs are more important than people's lives. What was their next story? 20 American soldiers died in Afghanistan today and thank god because that means 20 new job openings for unemployed youth?

I really feel bad for you Americans that you have to live with this kind of journalism. How does anyone in your country get any facts?

Daily Show. Kind of sad when I trust a comedian to give me news more than any other station.

I appreciate where the guy is coming from but his approach is a bit unprofessional and that does not reflect well upon himself or his profession.

Wow, I want to buy GoW just because of this speech all of a sudden. Seriously, well done Jaffe!

Must.

Resist.

Somehow...

Personally, while I agree with Jaffe on all of his points regarding CNN and how the news media in general regards video games and the industry... I think he needs to be a slight bit more professional about it. Even if he's right and these ignorant reporters feel the need to scapegoat video games either because they're too lazy to do some real research or because they know that hating on X subject will get them views, simply yelling at them and proclaiming their idiocy does not, in fact, actually work in the professional world.

In a perfect world, it would. In a truly perfect world, we'd go into VATS and deal with them the same way we deal with people in Fallout that don't feel particularly inclined to give us the deal we want to hear. However, as they're the ones with all of the cards in this deck, we have to play along.

... Unless someone has the button to launch all the nukes, in which case I'd gladly take my chances in an atomic wasteland instead of hearing their mindless ramblings.

Tinybear:

Well, the BBC has to thread a bit careful in the USA, because if they try to bring real journalism there, they would probably indirectly, or just directly also have to report that the US' journalistic standards are a cesspit. Imagine the outrage if a BBC journalist actually said something that in essence boiled down to "maybe now these dumb-ass americans can understand that automatic firearms do not belong in the hands of civilians?" Followed of course up with "Oh dear, they're blaming it on games again, how stupid are they?".

It's politics. Britain saw how France became the enemy just for saying "What the fuck kinda dumb idea is it to invade Iraq?", and realized that america is crazy. You don't ever let a crazy person know you think they're crazy, unless you want to die.

I have to ask, are you trying to get a rage induced response? Because you certainly seem to be poking people with a stick and going "Neener neener!"

If not, you might want to re-think how you post in the future, because this seems suspiciously like bait.

Quazimofo:
Also, since when does grand-theft-auto have a points system? I only noticed a money counter, but not points. Though to be fair, I never played the games a whole lot. Saints Row 3 won me over.

Well, to be frank, it did have a points system. Sure you had to go to statistics and search for overall points (which also dettermiend your level of "Criminalness") and it had abosolutely 0 inpact of the game. but there were points. and killing anyone (hooker included) would give you some.

so as to remove all possible triggers for mentally unstable people we should stop use of video games, movies, tv, radio, books, paintings, art and the spoken word.

Broadcast news is a blight on journalism.

OT: Another reason to love David Jaffe. This is almost as good as the time he called out Olivia Munn for being an utter moron.

Oh, really? XD When did he do that?

Ultratwinkie:

They have Piers Morgan, an intellectually dishonest twat with the charisma of a Ku Klux Klan rally and the reasoning power of Rush Limbaugh.

Well what with so much shit coming to the UK from the USA, it was only fair we sent some their way for a change! I have to love your summing up of him though - very funny and very true!

Wow, I've never actually sat down to watch an American news program, but holy cow, you could practically taste the bias there, I don't claim that the UK's news programs are unbiased (that would be impossible) but at least they make a show of separating the facts and opinions, so you can tell what's going on and where the differing opinion lies. That ridiculous opening segment about speculative job loss at gun manufacturers was just breathtakingly overt... propaganda for lack of a better word.
I'd go mad if all the news outlets in the U.K. were like that.

People have ot stop referring to Burnett as a journalist. She's not. She's a propagandist.

However, he doesn't make the BEST points against the correlations between real and virtual violence. The fact that games are not made for children is wrong in many cases. The more important aspect is the difference between virtual violence and real violence.

In a game a kill is a task that is completed and rewarded. And that is all it is. You don't shoot a real man but a virtual representation of a person representing a virtual enemy force, you complete a task, part of your objective, for scores and points, as a challenge. In real life there is no innate reward in a kill. It is not even on the same level of conscious thought, at any time.

And besides that, videogames in 90% of the time, put you in the role of the hero. You are participating in violence to enforce your ideals most of the time. If the new call of duty went back to World War 2 and placed the player in the role of a nazi, and then enforced the idea that nazi's are evil and had the player commit evil acts, I doubt it would have the same appeal.

Military shooters present the US military as heroes who export freedom and justice all around the world. So you haven't technically become killers, but you are certainly cheering for them.

You should play Spec Ops: The Line. Really does a good job destroying that trope.

Erin Burnett is the worst. Look up her coverage of Occupy Wall Street. I don't care what you think about Occupy Wall Street (I think they're a few people who have no idea how to make a few, really good points surrounded by a huge number of idiots who want to slack of, smoke pot, and smell bad), her treatment of it cannot be honestly called "journalism".

Yes, because the United States is unique in the world and unique in history in venerating members of their armed forces. Good point.

Mike Myers is right, she's just making stuff up.
