Microsoft's motion controller moves 24 million units.
The Kinect never really took off as a core gaming platform, but that hasn't prevented people from buying it in droves. Microsoft's latest sales figures indicate that the full-body motion controller has sold 24 million units since its release. If Kinect were a console, this means its sales would now be on par with the original Xbox, and would have surpassed Nintendo's Gamecube.
Microsoft's figures indicate a few more interesting things about the Kinect. Since, at this point in its life cycle, the Xbox 360 has sold about 76 million units, the Kinect has an attach rate of approximately 1/3. Counting the Kinect as its own console rather than an accessory, it is currently the eleventh-bestselling non-handheld, right in front of the Gamecube, tied with the Xbox, and somewhat behind the Nintendo 64.
Whether these are the numbers Microsoft was hoping for is hard to say, but a very significant portion of 360 owners want a Kinect to go along with it - or else own one because it happened to come in the box. Whatever the reason, as peripherals go, the Kinect is easily one of the more popular ones. Take that for what you will.
...WHY. Why is this selling that well? The thing is a walking disaster. The Kinect doesn't even work as intended and the games for it are garbage even if you're being generous. The only way I can possible fathom this happening is because almost every current retail model of 360 comes with a Kinect included so people are buying it because they have to, not because they actually want to, when their first 1-3 Xbox 360s red ring and need to be replaced.
Daystar Clarion: That the Kinect is a quality periphial with a large library of great games?
Or that quite a few people are willing to drop cash on plastic gimmicky crap?
You be the judge!
This doesn't prove either of those things.
The Wii already proved them years ago.
Except the Wii HAS a quality library of great games. Gamers just decided not to buy and try them. The Kinect has, what, a few marginally functional dance games? Wii has Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Zack & Wiki, Monster Hunter Tri, The Last Story, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Madworld, No More Heroes 1 & 2, Dead Space: Extraction, Muramasa: The Demon's Blade, Okami, Zelda: Twilight Princess and Zelda: Skyward Sword, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Red Steel 2, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Xenoblade Chronicles, and so much more.
Kinect has... a few dozen games that barely function at all (curse you, Steel Battalion!)

Can we stop saying that gamers decided to not play the Wii's good games already. That argument lost its fire when we all realized that Nintendo's 3rd party marketing was about as active as Chris Farley on a treadmill. That and some of the games for mentioned weren't shipped in large numbers (Zack and Wiki). Also people got sick of the sequel-itis that was going on.
OT: Kinect bundles explain these sales. It'd be interesting to see info on how many people actually use their Kinects.

So... To contradict my point that the Wii is at times a quality peripheral with a large library of great games and evidence that people will drop money on plastic gimmicky grab you point out the large library of great games? Congratulations! You win!

Actully when Monster Hunter Tri came out all those years ago Capcom did have a shot at marketing it in the west.
The results of which was quite cringe worthy even by game advertisment standards.

your point was sort of vague... sorry if I misunderstood it.
But, really, most of the great Wii games BARELY used the gimmicky motion controls at all, if they did at all.

This and I'd also like to know how many people sold theirs off to a gamestop or amazon or eBay or where ever else. I don't see nearly as many people busting this out for a game night than I see people busting out Mario Party 4 or, Smash Bros Melee but then, that doesn't exactly help Gamecube sales especially since people stopped counting that years upon years ago.

repeated tests are a way to find proof.
i think people buy kinect for the disco alone. turn off all the lights, turn on night-vision - instant disco. Oh wait, what was that, you dont have night vision? become a robot.

Madworld and Xenoblade were the only decent games in this list. <enter the flame from zelda and mario zombie fanboys>
BrotherRool: And maybe one day they'll make a game for it
I don't want any games for kinect but I would TOTALLY buy one if they gave it the capability of making a giant hologram of myself rampage through the city. Or I could use my cat. Or just take a dump. Just drop a giant holographic turd on the city.
That number is pretty meaningless as the kinect is bundled with the xbox I bet a large number of those buyers are just like me, I left the daft thing in the box and ignored it.
