Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs Due In 2013

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs Due In 2013

Some polishing's needed, but Frictional Games and thechineseroom are almost done making Amnesia-style bacon.

When last we saw Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, it was due in October 2012, but while we did get a very cool trailer for Halloween, that was all we got. Time has passed since then, and Frictional Games now says its release date will be in Q2 2013.

"Originally we thought it would be a short, experimental game set in the universe of Amnesia," says Frictional, explaining the delay, "but thechineseroom [AKA the folks behind Dear Esther] had a vision that was bigger than that." Hence the blown release date, as work on the Amnesia sequel/spiritual successor took much longer than previously thought.

"What we ended up with is no longer what we had first imagined," says Frictional, "but a fully fledged Amnesia game. A different kind of Amnesia, but definitely not a short experiment." How much you'll be paying for this short experiment, and what the game's system requirements are, remains a mystery. Hopefully not for much longer though, as Frictional Games is eager to get you right inside its shiny new Machine.

I'm looking forward to it being a veritable Scarlet web.

Edit: Wow, it's been a long time since I used that word, even it is a pun.

Still not sure about this TheChineseRoom business.

Regardless of what you think about Dear Esther, I wouldn't call it an impressive resume for the makers of a horror game, let alone a sequel(?) to the most effective horror game I've ever played.

Hopefully the actual Amnesia team is working on something else interesting.

Yeah, me neither. Another thing that makes me feel rather dubious about this deal is that it doesn't seem to me like they've been given a particularly long development time. That has of course changed somewhat with the delay, but I doubt that we're gonna get anything big here.

With that said, I thought that piece of dialogue at the end of the teaser is pretty cool and foreboding, and I'm really curious as to what the fuck is going on in this game.

Agreed there.

The Wikipedia page for them lists their next project as an "Untitled first-person horror game" that's supposed to use a new engine.

Oh god my body (and bowels) is ready. I have money on my Steam wallet set aside just for this.

I want to get excited, but what I've been hearing about The Chinese Room having "a vision that was bigger than that" worries me...

You see I hated Dear Esther, I bought it on release for 7 and played it once. It took me an hour to complete, it had no gameplay aside from pressing "W" to move, and although the environments were beautiful, with no gameplay and an extremely dull story I couldn't really appreciate the world too much.

I REALLY hope TCR don't effect this game too much. I know I'm worrying over nothing, Frictional are great devs and the trailer looked really good. But if it's more of an "art" game rather than a pants-s***ingly scary first person horror game then I will not be getting out my wallet for them. I'll just have to stick to Amnesia: The Dark Descent mods if that's the case :(
