Updated: PlayStation 4 Becomes Reality

Just as we anticipated, Sony has pulled back the curtain on the PlayStation 4. The console has just been officially announced for the first time after months of rumors, speculation, and leaks. Sony called the announcement "a moment of truth" and "a bold step forward" in the company's future in the gaming space.

Update 1: When it comes to features, the PlayStation 4 includes some rather interesting new concepts. The console allows you to record your gameplay at all times, trim clips, and share them with others. You can also watch live gameplay of your friends as they play, and even take of their controller to help them out of a tough spot they can't get past.

The UI itself is completely different from that of the PS3, and appears much more like the Xbox 360 UI, with boxes and geometric navigation rather than rows of icons.

Update 2:
The PS4 is capable of being put into a low-power state that allows the console to complete downloads while not being fully powered up. You can also pause your live play sessions and resume them later using the low-power option, ensuring that your console doesn't eat up power as it waits for you to return.

Update 3:
Sony is emphasizing the connectivity between the PlayStation Vita and the PS4, promising that remote play will finally become a real emphasis. The company is accomplishing this using technology from Gaikai, a company which it recently purchased.

The PS4 will also play host to all the usual streaming media subjects, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, as well as several sports networks.

Update 4: The PlayStation 4 will allow you to play your games as they download. For example, if you have just the first few levels of a downloadable title completed, you'll be able to play that content while the PS4 finishes downloading the remainder. That's a pretty important bullet point, given that the PS3 is notorious for its downloading and updating wait times.

Update 5: Still no sighting of the actual console yet, but at least we know what the controller looks like.

Update 6: The PlayStation 4 will launch in Holiday 2013. Oh, and we never got to see the console itself.

Update 7: And it's a wrap! Sony decided not to show off the console itself, but there's plenty of details regarding the upcoming release to ponder over. We'll be further covering tonight's events in the coming hours, so get browsing!

Well, this was a huge surprise. Everyone already knew this was what it would be didn't they?

Now we have shinier graphics... Say hello to an era of games costing even more to develop, causing developers to only release the absolute blandest safest games in a never ending bid to still make money on the quest for completely unnecessary photo realism. Oh wait...

I guess it'll be Microsoft who will be last in unveiling their next console to compete with the PS4 and Wii-U

Hope we get more info soon, but more importantly, what games can do next!

8Gb of DDR5 RAM? That's INSANE!

So far, I'm not impressed with the PS4. However, it is early into it. Heck, we don't even know what the actual console looks like yet! I'll keep watching.

Also, can someone tell me if Unified Memory is better then whatever kind of Memory the WiiU has? Cause if it isn't any better, then the WiiU has more Memory then the PS4!

Yeah, that's almost as good as my computer! Wait...

I'm surprised they named it the playstation 4. I wonder if it's going to be released as something else in Japan.

What's that? Is that... actual optimism?! Because, I'm going with that as well. I'm looking forward to more news and what kind of games we're going to get.

Yeah, that's almost as good as my computer! Wait...

That's better than any computer. PC's only have DDR3 RAM. Only GPU's have DDR5 memory.

Flash memory is not RAM.

It's about fucking time

Flash memory is not RAM.

My bad. I'm not too well with Computer/Console Components.

Should have called it the PS5... you know, just to mess with people's heads. Maybe they could even charge more then.

I guess I'm a dummy.

The fact that you can turn off the console, and then boot it back up to pick up right where you left off is uber cool. Some of the streaming stuff looks interesting, however you might have to be always-online for that.

I'm just waiting for info to confirm or disconfirm the "Used-Game-Blocking" rumors. Because if Playstation doesn't do it, there's no way in hell XBox WILL do it unless they want to send players flocking to their biggest competetor in droves.

I know I'll sure as hell be picking up whichever one doesn't block used games (assuming that one does and one doesn't).

Buzzwords right out of the gate. Another brilliant and certainly not awful console generation is starting.

pureisuteishion po (not shi) probably.

Probably its why 4 looks almost like triangle

It's going to be quite a change. RAM has been holding back console games in many more ways than just how phat the textures can be. This should open things up nicely.

Apparently you'll be able to share your gaming in real time and allow your friends to take over of your controller over the internet. Yeah, can't wait to see that get hacked. xD

I was honestly not expecting that! GDDR5 RAM is stupidly quick! Assuming that they have a good CPU and a northbridge chip that can push such high speeds from RAM to CPU then we might actually see something that can match and possibly even BEAT a high-end PC!

This new try before you buy thing just might get me to buy this one... Assuming that they don't shut it down because someone coughed on it!

Recording your games is pretty cool, but...

Taking over your friend's controller to help them? Like, over PSN? That's a new idea that... isn't so terrible. Interesting. Gonna be following these features.

Its called a PS4.....call me totally surprised. lol.

Thing is,with every new generation of consoles, we just get shinier versions of previous games....except with an even higher budget for development cost. The graphics of look amazing, but why should that surprise anyone? I expect that. Maybe im just cynical, but how much of what they will show will be real or just games with touched up graphics to make them impressive?

Like alot of us we grew from playing C64 and always wanted better graphics. Now, i think we are at a point were the graphics are perfect. Can we now concentrate on new experiences in games? Not more CoD with shinier graphics.

According to Destructoid: "It will have 8GB of unified memory, a X86 CPU, 8 CPU cores, 2 teraflops computational performance, and a "Supercharged PC architecture."

How exactly do they plan to sell this thing at a profit? Are they planning on losing even more money in losses?

And before anyone quotes me on this, no, just because Sony stopped making a loss on production of the PS3 in 2010, that is not the same thing as being profitable. They burned through their entire PS2 warchest with the PS3, and that was a huge amount of money. They haven't even begun to recoup the losses they accrued this gen, and now they're going to try and sell yet more consoles at a loss?

Look away from the tech-porn and this isn't exactly good news for Sony. The Ps3 cost them money. The Vita is currently costing them money. They need to start turning an actual profit, not repeating the same business practises that have seen them go from $120 billion worth to $17 billion.

Sorry, I know this is going to be one of the sole cynical voices in amongst all the "WOOOH PS4 YEAH!" but this is not good for Sony. Financially, they're on the ropes. They need to get their shit together.

That streaming option and allowing friends to take over one another's games sounds interesting. Monitoring this thread.

Likewise here. If they're smart and don't block used games then they can gladly have my money. If not, well I guess I could see how I like an XBox. So far it sounds interesting but that's the deal breaker for me right now.

Some pretty interesting stuff, I like the idea of the Gaikai enhanced Vita remote play. PS3>Vita remote play kinda sucks.

Still waiting on the anti-used game verdict.
So far the low power feature seems very cool and useful.

Also, a tech demo isnt game play footage.

My Captcha said Grump Cat. lol

Keep in mind though, all those social gimmicks like taking video footage, screenshots etc. consumes RAM. Question is, how much. And how much will developers have left to use for actual games when they have to account for all those things in advance when making the game?

The stream is so awful. Sound cutting out, the chat constantly crashing and I can't log in because their servers are too busy.
Apparantly UStream will be integrated into the PS4, how nice, awful streaming directly from my console

If I might ask what's the difference?

Low power feature and recording footage just might be enough to pull me over to the PlayStation and away from Xbox (which would be amusing, since it was the X360 that converted me away from Nintendo...)

The online features? I don't see myself having a strong online console presence any time soon, so I'll give that a miss. And if it's anti-used games, I'm out.

Now I just want to see a price-tag. Because that's the other thing that's likely to leave me running for the hills.

Colour me jaded but I give zero effs about sharing and videos and blah blah blah; I just want to play my damn game.

It'll probably still leave more RAM than the PS3 for them to work with. Remember that the PS3 has only 256 MB of system RAM and another 256 MB for the graphics. PS4 has a whole 7.5 GB more than the combined PS3 RAM and it is MUCH faster!

I can just see so many jerks fucking people over :D *jumps into a game while friend is in the bathroom, drops a grenade at their feet and then goes offline*

Still, while I'm impressed with the system (somewhat) I'm not fancying participating in this generation. Plus I'd need to see games.

Edit: Well, the playing as you download thing is neat, I've been thinking of that for years.
