The PS4 Won't Support DualShock 3 Controllers

image

Though PS3 games and regular controllers won't work with the PlayStation 4, Sony's next console will support the PlayStation Move.

It's not terribly surprising given that the next PlayStation won't be backwards compatible, but Sony has officially confirmed that along with your PS3 games, DualShock 3 controllers will not work with the PS4. Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the news at a roundtable discussion after Wednesday's PS4 reveal, stating that the console "doesn't support DualShock 3."

You won't have to ditch all of your old controllers, though; the Move motion controller will work with the PS4. LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule implied this functionality when it used a Move controller onstage during the PlayStation Meeting, though not to show off a game.

Sony's updated DualShock 4 has features not used in the previous iteration, such as a touchpad and Share button, so it makes sense that games designed for the PS4 wouldn't be able to work with the older controller. With your PSN games also not transferring to the PlayStation 4, you might just want to hang onto those controllers--and your PS3--in case you ever want to play your downloadable games again.

Hey look! Another thing my PC can do that the PS4 can't!

Makes sense I suppose, I mean, it's not like the dualshock 4 is any different, button configuration wise.

Why would a previous console controller work with the new one? sony has never made the controllers compatible with the new systems.

But isnt that the case with all consoles anyway? :-)

No, the PS2 was compatible with PS1 controllers and I'm sure that you could use a dual shock 2 on the PS3 if you had a USB converter. Still not a big deal, mind, but yeah.

Shocking. Dual Shocking that is.

If PS4 isn't going to play PS3 games, then I'd want my PS3 to stick around.

So whatever.

Ouch. It's gonna be the PS3 launch all over again -- technically superior system dies because people aren't buying. Price reports I've seen say two models, one at $429, one at $529, which is only slightly less than the original PS3 prices of $499 and $599.

That was at almost the peak of the boom times, and included backwards compatibility which gave it a huge lineup of solid quality games right out of the gate, and Sony had the profits of the PS2 to support them in their loss leader.

Now? We're just starting to come out of a recession, there's no backwards compatibility, and Sony doesn't have the massive cash reserves it once had. This thing could be the death-knell for it.

Buy calls now for the inevitable pop during E3, sell them and buy puts just before the Microsoft conference.

Of course, do so with only the money you can afford to lose, I'm not a professional and this is not professional advice. Any money you risk is your risk alone, yada yada yada..

I have no intention of throwing away a console because I've got a new one, so not much of a deal. I can't imagine that many people were expecting Dual Shokc 3 controllers to work

I'm not particularly surprised. I don't think any PS model has used the previous iteration's controllers. But it is just yet another thing that tells me that I should keep my PS3 and wait for a long time to get a PS4.

Nope. Wii-U will use your old Wii controllers.. including the balance board.

SonOfVoorhees:

Well.. Not to sound Nintendo fan-girly here, but the Wii launched with backwards compatibility and let you use your GC controllers for your GC games as well as some Wii games. The Wii-U plays all your Wii stuff including the digital stuff if you transfer it over, still uses Wiimotes, and actually necessitates you keep your old controllers for a lot of Wii/VC titles.

wow Sony had the advantage...and proceeds to fumble it away, really don't think I'm going to like this new console generation

Wow.. so it's not compatible because of the dam FacePSBook button :/

Sony Employes:
"Hur Dur lets make them pay even more for the system by making EVERYTHING incompatible!"
"Dur great Idea Bob! How though?"
"Facebook button!1!!1"
"Won't that piss everyone off though?"
"Nop!! Lets make it compatible with the PSVibrator that no one uses!"

Really though, in this day and age if they really wanted to, they could have made even the PS1 controller work with the PS4.

/sigh

A system with completely different system architecture is not backwards compatible?

YOU DONT SAY

[/quoteI remember the ps1 being limited on the ps2 though I might be remebering that wrong. I had no idea about ps2 controllers working on the ps3 either still I take back my comment.

3rd bullet in the foot, I hope this thing fails and takes Sony with it.....

Sony, what are you doing?! Sony! STAHP!

Its unsurprising that they are not compatible , I mean its not like PS2 controllers worked on the PS3 . Plus its slightly different design wise thanks to the touchpad and the share button ect.

Plus the system itself is going to be X86 architecture based so its no surprise that PS3 games won't work since they are all based on the Cell architecture.

Why would it? No other console has supported the previous ones' controller

I want to like the PS4, but dafuq is sony doing?
The second player is not going to need the share button and the touchpad (using my power to look in the future here) won't be used in any not completely gimmicky way, apart from 1 or 2 first party titles.
I mean at least the option would have been nice, since for sure not all games are going to use it.
The PS2 controllers worked with an adapter on the PS3, even if they did not have the same functionality (that weird motion control sixaxis thing the PS3 controllers had going on)
It's sad that sony moves away from the relative openess that the PS3 was having.

EDIT:

IamQ:

Yes, the PS2 supported the PS1 controllers, the Wii supported the GC controllers, the WiiU supports everything the Wii supported (no GC controllers though), the PS3 supported PS1 and PS2 controllers via an adapter (and it supported quite a few different USB powered non-sony controllers too)

Five bucks says that most games in the years to come won't use the touch pad except to go back to the playstation menu, and the share button could be replaced by a menu option. Someone, if not Sony, could release a hack/dongle/update that let's you use the Dualshock 3 at least in games. When you got friends over to play Nazi, Commie, or Banana Republic Zombies why buy another $50 hunk of plastic that will get 3-8 hours of use a month when you have a functionally identical one sitting by the tv collecting dust. It's a waste of money and resources to do this. I use my original 360 controller for xbox and any pc games that don't work with a mouse. I love that concept. Why make us buy more junk? We don't need it, and the planet doesn't need it either. Is the new Dualshock using a different wireless protocol? I doubt it. Bluetooth should have bandwidth for Dualshock3 with a touchpad added on. Are you really gouging us with up marketing those controller prices, Sony? A little for sure, but that's standard business for any corporation today.

Sony just let us use a PS3 controller. It gives your new and unproven system brownie points with budget minded PS3 owners that play local mutliplayer who don't play Move junk.

Ummmm... not to be "that guy" but people do realize the system will come with it's own controller right? It isn't like we're going to have to buy it seperatly. We all claim social gaming is a redundant concept, so I assume many of us don't play with a lot of people locally anyway. So... whats the big issue? We won't be able to carry over our old controller. Heaven forbid we'll get 1 free one with the console.

Couldn't agree more, talk about a bloody storm in a teacup.

Dangit, Sony, what happened? Now and then I think of when I used your products. Like the PS2 which made me glad enough to cry. I told myself that you were right for me. But started drifting from your company. But it was fun and it's a time I still remember. You can get addicted to a certain kind of madness. Like low cost systems with awesome software. But then you charged a huge amount. Destroyed a truly great cash cow. And I'll admit that I was sad that it was over. But you didn't have to go that way. Make out like graphics were the only thing that mattered. And I don't even need your stuff, but you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough. No you didn't have to drop so low, have your investors sell their shares and then say you're dying. I guess that I don't need you though, now you're just some company I used to know.

A little dissapoint but honestly... I never use my second controller except as a replacement when one needs to be charged *tear of loneliness shed*. Besides, nobody ever has that many controllers anyway. I usually share if I have to, and same as I did with all my consoles. Hell, if you can't afford one $50 controller then you need to space out your purchases

Wii can use the Gamecube's controller. Wii U uses Wii controller. So, someone did it before. But this is not the thing that clicked in my primate mind: The Vita is compatible with the PSOne/PSP games in the SEN/PSN, but this new console will not be compatible with anything? Sony was not capable to bring PSOne/PS2 or PSP compatibility for this new console? I understand if they said that my wonderful copy of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is not going to work, but they are telling me the same for my Twisted Metal Black, my Slap Happy Rhythm Busters. And this can't be possible. I can't believe that a machine like the one they said they have can't run my PsOne and PS2 games.

Next up, Sony announce the PS4 will not be compatible with electricity, HDTVs or Human eyes.

But this isn't THAT big of a deal. How many consoles have shipped without a controller? Certainly the last generation gave you at least one so it isn't like the PS4 will be unplayable without an extra purchase.

I'm less concerned about not being able to use ps3 controllers and more about the apparent fact that people think this. It's like they never heard of the Wii or WiiU, and other examples others posted.

So they ditch compatibility with the GOOD controller, but make it backwards compatible with the useless GIMMICK controller...
Jeez. From the elegant simplicity and value of the PS2 to THIS.

The fuck happened Sony?

Strange, for everything they announce in the systems favor they announce something bad as well.

Haha true enough, still interesting to see what gets people going.

Sega genesis supported Sega master controllers/light guns with the power base converter that made it backwards compatible.
ps1 original or dual shock and memory cards would work on a ps2
ps3 has a external adapters for memory cards and controllers that works to transfer saves and use controllers for backwards compatibly "when the system first launched"
the wii allowed you to use game-cube controllers/memory card slots built in
The Wiiu allows you to use all of your old wii controllers, accessories and plays Wii games and even transfer over all of your virtual console games via wifi from your old wii.

So in short sony goofed up by not letting their blue-tooth/sixaxs wireless controller work with their new system.

As a loyal sony fan with over combined 350 ps1/ps2/ps3/psp games I don't know, they lost a customer in me.
