Square Enix Files New Trademark for Deus Ex

Square Enix looks to augment the series with the possibility of a new title.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution enjoyed critical success with its depiction of a dystopian future and the social unrest that comes with human augmentation. The game was popular enough that there's a movie adaptation in the works, with a writer and director already attached to the project. But what about a game sequel? It looks like there may be something on the horizon: some sleuthing has turned up a recently filed trademark for the name "Deus Ex: Human Defiance".

The European trademark record, which was filed on February 26 by Square Enix, lists a number of classifications that include references to "computer games software", "video games and games for mobile phones", "printed matter", "books" and "online computer game services". Ausgamers verified the filing as genuine, identifying that the trademark was filed by the same firm that applied for Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Additional details are scarce apart from rampant speculation on NeoGAF, where the filing was first discovered. Possibilities include a potential Wii U release of Human Revolution, an HD re-release of the original Deus Ex, or a straight-up sequel after the (eventual) completion of Thief 4. Until we find out more, we'll have to wait and see.

In any case, a sequel to the events of Human Revolution looks pretty interesting right now, especially if the boss fights are given some extra attention this time around.

Cool! now lets fix that problem with the character building, and actually make us properly choose to create a unique and specialized character build that best compliments our own play style... not like human revolution, where by the end Jensen is good at pretty much everything and by the beginning is perfect with the whole shooting thing...<.<

PleaseBeASequel PleaseBeASequel PleaseBeASequel PleaseBeASequel...

Please, for the love of whatever deity you pray to(if applicable) be a sequel to Human Revolution.

Seriously, I love that game. Damn near everything was terrific, from the art style to the music(which I still listen to today). From the way I dress to the things I make with my 3D modeling abilities, that game has inspired and influenced me in countless ways. I want to see that world again, and explore the tiny facets of it like I did all the way back in August of 2011. Please make it happen.

Squeenix has a record for taking franchises in the wrong direction and an overreliance on pretty graphics, but if Eidos are allowed to design the actual gameplay again then I'm looking forward to what's coming. DE:HR was a great game in nearly all respects (aside from the aforementioned boss battles), so it'll be interesting what they come up with for a sequel.

Lets get this out of the way quickly, like ripping off a plaster...

"I didn't ask for this."

But I really want it now anyway!

A bit too much points inflation in Deus EX:HR

But the game is now an Action rpg...you can't expect to be completely useless with every gun when the game starts where it takes a full 4 seconds to aim at someone. Bare in mind in the original Deus ex..the AI was half blind and would take a while to notice you in the massive open levels. So it was balanced.

Now in Human revolution the AI will see you in 0.1 seconds from a distance in a restricted area. That same leveling aiming skills mechanic would not work. That said you can't run and gun because the reticles are massive when you move (unless you invest in those augs to reduce reticle spread when moving)...also all guns and machine guns especially, are tricky because the recoil is crazy unless you invest in recoil augs. That is 6 praxis points, which in the early game is a lot..especially when you need the environmental augs

You can eventually get gun attachments that do the aiming and recoil dampening for you though.

YES! Bring it!

Good! DX:HR was a prime example of an excellent game with some rough patches (boss fights, limp ending, etc.). If those could be ironed out and the existing solid mechanics elaborated upon, the resulting game could be glorious indeed. I wouldn't mind a slightly more open game world as well. I'm not talking a cyberpunk Skyrim here (though that wouldn't be bad either), but to take the dash of nonlinearity that DX:HR's areas had and add to it.

I'd rather that they would make an HD remake of the original Deus Ex. There's no game that justifies an HD remake more than it.

New vision Mod..but we really need the black mesa treatment

They need to make the AI better

I killed someone in front of a camera and a patrol route and then I hid. No one cares unless they see the death lol

Fantastic news! About time. More Deus Ex is a GOOD thing. More Adam Jensenn would be better but his story was kinda wrapped up.

Of course Doom has the right of it...would prefer a straight up modern day remake of Deus Ex, though I will add FOR PC. Fuck 7 year old consoles.

Fuck yes. Deus Ex HR was my favorite game of the year and I fucking loved it despite the flaws (mostly there really wasn't much choices in augments to specialize heavily in one area. Also boss fights.) I will definitely put down money for a sequel/prequel/spiritual whatever the fuck.

I might be over-analysing it, but abbreviate Deus Ex: Human Defiance and you get... Deus Ex HD.

I hope I'm not in it. I have other stuff to do, you know.

I wouldnīt mind something in the vein of a new Deus Ex game, after i completed it, it dawned on me that there really isnīt that many alternatives at the moment. Bioshock is the closest i got so far.

perhaps in this one we play as Paul Denton?

Either way, do want. I really enjoyed DX:HR

But we need your awesome voice. And what would Pritchard be without you ?

I would love a new Deus Ex. Just finished the Deus Ex HR Missing Link DLC past weekend, was impressed by how well that was done for a DLC. If this new DX is comparable to DX HR or DX1 then i'm all up for it.

I'd find this series more interesting if they chose to explore beyond just cyberpunk. Now hear me out, cyberpunk is awesome but what if we kept going forward? Post cyberpunk? actual scifi, move from transhumanism to posthumanism then all the way to postphysical etc etc.

Obviously it shouldn't happen in one game but what if they did it over four or five games?

I'd look forward to a possible sequel or maybe an HD remake of the original for consoles.

I really enjoyed the game for the most part, but the endings ruined the experience for me. I really couldn't care less what they do with it now.

Well a remake of the first Deus Ex so that its up to modern specs, runs properly on your system of choice and works as intended wouldnt go amiss. Also can tie off what happened to Jansen after the events of HR.

However i wouldnt mind a sequel. Not in the slightest.

Just don't outsource the bossfights (or anything!) to another studio. Then you are pretty much golden if you give it to Eidos Montreal.

Looking forward to this, especially if they can take the feedback from the last game and make an even better stealth experience.

I hope Eidos Montreal will be working on it again. Just don't outsource any of the game this time guys.

*gasp* I think that you're on to something here. Also, if you stay through the subtitles in DXHR, you hear something that's a spoiler, and then you hear the original Deus Ex theme, followed by an achievement called "The D Project" - maybe the D stands for Defiance, and the music is a hint at a remake?

Its more likely that the D project refers to the Denton brothers from the original Deus Ex since HR is a prequel to it.

I would really love a HD reskin of deus ex, because quite frankly it looked terrible from day one. Though they can keep the cover mechanics from HR, they were the most functional cover mechanics I've ever played.

As excited as I am for another Deus Ex game, PLEASE LET EIDOS MONTREAL RELEASE THIEF 4 FIRST, SQUARE ENIX. I'm tired of having my emotions toyed with for Thief.

Thedutchjelle:

I think a female protagonist would be awesome. Gaming needs more heroines.

Do the boss fights properly this time, and I am in.

Oh hell, I'm in either way, but it would be nice if I could stealth the whole game instead of Rambo'ing three awkward fights.

The problem still persists that its way too efficient to just pick up the biggest gun in your vicinity and start blowing shit up... I mean recoil, augs, enhancements, make really no difference in the gunplay, save for the completely broken laser attachment, which I make a point not to even touch, lest my Jensen truly become a god among men... all the guns function exactly the same from beginning to end... so its pretty bizarre when you get to the final level of the game and you pull out the ridiculously over powered plasma rifle to fuck shit up, even though you've only used pistols for the entirety of the game...

My point is, specialization is important in, not just Deus Ex games, but any rpg, and it doesn't just get off the hook, because its an action rpg... weapon specialization is important in, not just, defining jensen as a unique character, but also in creating an avatar that compliments our own playstyle, to create a much more focused and personal experience to the player...

Regardless of whether its the same system or not, because the same system would work, if balanced properly, their should be something in place to stop my formerly sneaky jensen to bust out the gattling gun and start effectively mowing down everything in site...<.<

Adam Jensen:

Well deus ex invisible war had a choice to pick a female character... though that doesn't count seeing as how invisible war never happened...<.<

As long as the upgraded 10mm pistol is still incredibly overpowered then I'm in.

I really hope we all won't be disappointed here. A sequel would be awesome.

And this time let's not outsource arguably the most potentially emotional and climactic parts of our game to another company and let them work on it without any direction or feedback. Oh yes let's also not reward Actions with XP but instead award XP based on mission performance, along a gradient that would equally reward stealth, non-lethal, lethal and aggressive play so that the only thing that matters to your playstyle is your choice.

Let's also not do what we did with the previous game and bring back weapon skills because quite honestly it was kinda boring not having to train in the use of a weapon and instead being able to pick up that HeavyMG and just go to town on the bosses making them essentially a joke in every way possible.

You know what would REALLY get the fans going to? An HD remake of Deus Ex. I mean we already have the best Action/RPG ever made ever sitting in our closet and we even own the IP for it. We could easily just remake the levels seeing as all the work has already been done for us. Even character placement and patrols have been figured out and the entire game is (almost) perfectly balanced to allow (almost) any approach to the levels. Man would it be awesome to just include that with our next game.

Said by sadly no one at Eidos.

Sacman:

Those augs make a massive difference..especially the recoil aug.
If you want to take the one shot then you're right..you are good to go..but try taking 2 headshots with any gun (even pistol). The reticle will be way over the head of the target by the second shot unless you wait for 1.1 seconds which is an eternity and every guard is now fully alerted

I learnt this the hard way with the combat rifle. 1 headshot is not enough to kill a medium guard let alone a heavy. So mid-game you can't silently dispatch guards with it unless you have fully invested in recoil.

Anyway the original Deus ex is one of my favourite games ... I like it more then HR.. but I can't kid myself a trade off has to be made. If Adam Jensen couldn't even wear an environmental suit or hit a guy with a baton from behind without a crap load of points into training the game would flop.
A lot of original deus ex fans were more relieved then anything that HR didn't completely ruin the legacy of the original.

Eidos montreal took many balancing steps to make it similar to the original whilst modernising it in the least offensive way they could think of...

instead of batons you have melee but it uses battery,
limited weapon upgrade kits and attachments to specialise the weapons you like,
aug's in recoil and reticles while moving,
augs in damage protection if you want a more guns blazing playstyle,
only partially regenerating health,
There aren't actually that many OP grenades..unless you are metagaming,
you still have an inventory system which is harsh unless you upgrade
Weapons like stun gun, tranq rifles, peps...take a v long time to reload

Now there are lasers, laser targeting and other stuff...like you said you can just refuse to use it. I have to agree with you though...the laser actually negates the need for the reticle augs...but it only fits on 3 guns.I refuse to use the tranq gun, and armour piercing mods, and revolver explosive rounds as they are OP. The game is flexible enough for you to make your own play style. It doesn't punish you for it. (apart from the bosses lol).

One playthrough I was ninja Jensen... I got ambushed a few times (eg. alice pond gardens)... I had fully upgraded invisibility and icarus landing system...so I turned invisible and ran away.
On another playthrough I saw the plasma gun.. I refused to pick it up as I was role playing as crossbow Jensen.

I found the radar the most offensive part of HR..because I couldn't turn it off. The original didn't have radar...you have to listen to footsteps, lean and use infrared augs. I turned off objective markers and put a piece of paper where the radar is.

The game is not the perfect Deus ex game...but it could of been so so so so much worse. Played splinter cell conviction? Played the narrow corridor small thimble sized levels of Hitman: absolution. I mean the dude can holster a sniper rifle into his suit! And when he walks around china town...civilians have left convenient sniper rifles and explosives everywhere!!?? Half the hit's are done in cutscenes. The entire heart and point of Hitman was gone for 90% of bloodmoney fans.

I've going off topic..... long story short.. glass if half full. Not half empty.
