Fighting is Magic Rebounds Thanks To MLP Producer

My Little Pony producer resurrects fan-made fighting game, sans copyright infringement.

Fighting is Magic was a fun little fan project that put My Little Pony characters in a ring and let them beat the horse apples out of each other. The game was developed by a group called Mane6 for a number of years, until Hasbro hefted their scepter and issued a cease and desist last month. Now Lauren Faust, a former producer of the show, has stepped in to help out the indie devs. With her help, Mane6 will keep their game alive, but at the cost of using actual MLP characters.

While the Hasbro order has stopped them from working on or distributing their game as it stands, that only applies while it still contains Hasbro characters. Mane6 can keep developing Fighting is Magic as long as they make an original roster of fighters. That might seem contrary to the point of the project, but Mane6 and their fans have enough faith in the game that they're plunging ahead with a whole new list of characters, with help from Faust.

As Mane6 explains it: "It will be all new characters in a new setting, while keeping the moves, mechanics, and style of the game we wanted to make from the start. This means a lot of work for us, and a bunch of new challenges, but we're excited about the possibilities that come along with them."

Meanwhile, Faust seems pretty excited to be involved: "I'm so super psyched to be a part of this! I hope I can do my little part to help Mane6 finish up this game in a way that stays true to the spirit of the original - but in a way that can freely be shared! I hope you like what we come up with."

The news comes at a good time, as Fighting is Magic was picked to be featured in EVO2K13, a national fighting game championship in Las Vegas. It ranked 4th in voting, beating out AAA titles like Guilty Gear XX and Dead or Alive 5. While a compromise with Hasbro never came to fruition, obtaining the active participation of a the show's staff is the next best thing.

Never count a Brony out.

Good ol'Faust, and peeps wonder why so many consider her God tier.

God bucking speed, Mane6.
From what I've heard, the /mlp/ board in 4chan's trying to finish up the original game using a leaked download. Someone's going to mod it eventually, so I won't worry that much about the removal of ponies from the mod.
If we're lucky, we'll get two free fighting games; one with ponies and one with brand new characters by Lauren Faust.

She is pretty much my favorite cartoonist ever. I don't really follow MLP too much but the way she has acted towards fans of the show has been nothing short of amazing.

I wish more people with power were like Lauren. The world would be a much better place. At least we still get our fighting game though.

A. Yeah Faust didn't really do much besides supporting their project, this was always an option with or without her support.

B. Lauren Faust is awesome. I think that needs to be repeated every once in a while so everyone knows.

C. CALLED IT! Of course they aren't going to scrap the project, they can just reskin it and keep going. Why waste all that work when the solution is to empty your asset folder and make new art?

I am really quite psyched about this. I'm eager to find out what Faust and Mane6 come up with for characters and setting. Whatever it may be, I'm behind it (for what that's worth). I'm still fully behind cute colorful animals as characters in a fighting game, though.

I almost wonder if Faust's Galaxy Girls might make an appearance. That would be neat. Doubt it, but neat.

Now that's a Faustian bargain I can live with!

She plans to create the design for the new characters actually. She might also create the designs for the stages as well, but no word on that.

*Runs to the lab to run a series of tests and discuss with my peers*.

If that were to happen. We can't lose! Win, win baby!

So awesome that this isn't gona be thrown away! This has been the longest running fandom project and it would be a travesty to just have the years of work lost. Gona be so awesome when it's done, Faust ponies abound!
Faust working with them is cool to, she'll make some cool designs for the re-skins and all shall be well.

If Hasbro had half a brain they'd have gotten behind this and published it. Imagine the sheer amount of money that bronies would have thrown at this to play it. While I have no interest personally, I still think Hasbro done goofed.

Yeah and that has nothing to do with the game being made or not. They are reskining it. That's the solution, regardless of support form anyone outside the project. It's nice that Faust is doing character concepts for them but that's only tangential to the important point of making the game viable.

It's also basically celebrity support since she's doing the exact same work that the artist could have done themselves. Nothing Faust is doing is something that could not have been accomplished without her. Thus statement A.

Just "a producer"? Isn't that underselling her role just a little bit? She designed all f the characters, their personalities, the setting... She is the primary creative force behind FiM, to simply call her "a producer" and leave it at that seems odd.

I ain't even read this yet but all I can do is...

Sorry, I've been watching a lot of ContinueShow

And bronies the world over all quietly yelled in unison: "yay"

oh hell the fuck yes!

also, didn't know it beat Guilty Gear XX, I heard it did well but not 4th

It doesn't really effect me in any way, since I'm not really fond of fighting games, but I'm glad I live in a world where stuff like this happens.

Thank goodness. Its things like this that are just, well, awesome. This is why Lauren Faust is amazing, its going to be so much better now.

Can't wait to play it. Gonna make me Smile-Smile-Smile...

... I'll get my coat...

I am so happy Lauren Faust took time out of her insanely busy schedule to do this. We owe here our thanks. :)

The way you downplay the importance of the character design makes me sad.

They only wanted to continue if they could keep to the spirit of the original. Could they have just made some random characters and slapped it all together? Sure, but it wouldn't have been the same and everyone who cared about the project knows it.

Now with Faust behind them they can do exactly what they wanted to do. Create a game that holds true to the spirit of Fighting Is Magic, while at the same time not infringin on the trademark.

They spend too much time screwing with the show to notice any good things.

oh well, I hope this goes well, and with Faust on the team, I'm almost certain it will.

Will it involve the adding of music by Susumu Hirasawa, mainly a song that makes everything..a particular song that makes everything 20% more awesome? (I feel dirty now..)

OT: It's always nice to see projects that have potential have life breathed back into them, doubly nice that it has some support from one of the creators. Not really a brony or anything, but it's still nice that this game gets to see the light of day.

Agreed, I don't even know what he was thinking. The developers behind Fighting is Magic wasn't charging money for this game, nor accepting donations. Very questionable for Hasbro to do, but then again he's been goofing up quite a bit in his line of work to a degree most dislike the guy now.

Seriously though, I wish he and the developers of the content MLP supported this. Imagine how amazing and huge this game would of been with that kind of thing. No matter, Lauren Faust stepped in and Hasbro has to reap what he sought out to do.

I believe that Hasbro is in a delicate situation where the crossroads lead between maintaining a family friendly image, and dealing with an unexpected fanbase whose views may not align as such. I think there can be compromise, but right now, apparently their best idea was to create a spinoff for teenagers. Cue headdesking.

Out of all the things, you make a fighting game? No RPG or adventure game? An RPG where you could create the ponies and have different attributes and stuff seems more doable than a cheap fighting game.

Who am I kidding, it's bronies we're talking about, there's probably already several serious projects to do just that...

Oh great, now we get a game full of OC characters, like Nyx and Milky Way.

Actually... now I can finally beat up all the OC characters I hate, which is all of them.

I'm pretty sure that's what Mane6 and Faust are counting on as well, but with this as a plausible deniability for why they are finishing up the code.

I just don't see those guys throwing two years of their work out on the window to start from scratch, especially to hurt the original fan inspiration of the game. (and yes, at this point, the character and background designs *are* the largest part of a fighting game's content, it's not just some reskins that you change in a few days).

Houseman:

It's not based on MLP, not at all. There won't be any ponies in this.

And really, you hate all OCs? I don't believe that for a second. How on earth could you possibly hate Princess Sugarlicious Bonquisha Shanana Sparkle Doombringer the Third?

I imagine this scenario happened...

Regardless, I don't have a stake in this either way but I can already say this: Lauren Faust is a shining exemplar of a human being. If only more people could be like her.

"With her help, Mane6 will keep their game alive, but at the cost of using actual MLP characters."

Which only includes all animations and sound effects they've worked months on.
Basically everything they worked on so far, bar the coding.
Maybe you don't realize this but I can vouch for animation, no matter how "simple" it may look to you, being a titanic pain and those were very fluid animations with many frames.

They may now keep their game whose entire premise was iconic characters beating each other up "alive"... at the cost of the iconic characters.

Yeah no, it's not really "alive" that way.
It died, the meat of it is gone and now they break its bones to build something entirely different out of them.
The premise will never again be as cool and to the point as "my little pony fighting game".

Lauren Faust is, of course, 100x cooler than Hasbro could ever hope to be in event its wildest, most fevered imaginations. She handed them a pop culture phenomenon and they responded by strangling in the crib any attempt fans have made to embrace the property they love so much.

I wish I shared the glowing optimism about this new game, but the propsect of fighting with the characters I've grown to love was the entire appeal. There are plenty of fighting games to choose from. Sure, Faust is no doubt going to provide some great characters with really cool personalities and yadda yadda, but I'll always mourn the game that never was.

The music, the sound, the visuals were all coming together so well, now destroyed. They may very well release something built from scraps salvaged from the destruction, but the original work of art has been smashed by the corporate hammer. It's dead, and I hurt for the loss.

Welp, this is great news. Glad that all that hard work won't go to waste.

And fear not, fellow bronies, I have no doubt in my mind that once this game is released, SOMEONE is going to release a mod to replace all the sprites with ponies.

So really, everyone wins.

Lauren Faust is a class act. Not many people who create IPs for a living would get involved in a fan project for a series they've left. Is she still selling merch for that Galaxy Girls series she wanted to do?

BRB, going to see if I can throw money at her.

Isn't this exciting? Are you excited cause I'm excited I've never been so excited, well, except for the time that I went [gasp] but I mean really who could top that?
