Microsoft Reveals Age of Empires II: HD Edition

The HD remake of the classic RTS will launch on April 9, exclusively through Steam.

Age Of Empires II is one of those classic PC games that people think back on with teary eyes. Pretty much every PC gamer has that one story about playing Age of Empires II at a LAN party. Microsoft wants us to be able to relive those glory days, announcing Age of Empires II: HD Edition, a re-imagining of the 1999 RTS due out on April 9. The HD edition includes every singleplayer campaign from the Age of Kings original and the Conquerors expansion, and will be available exclusively through Valve's Steam platform.

If April 9 is too long for you to wait, gamers who opt to put their money down right now and prepurchase the game will receive a 10% discount as well as four days of early access. Since Ensemble Studios, the original creator of the game, has closed down, work on the updated version is being done by Hidden Path Entertainment, the developer which brought us Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Microsoft says that the HD edition has been completely remastered for 1080p displays, and includes an "enhanced visual engine" that will spruce up the visuals of the game's terrain, water and fire, and ambient lighting effects. Steamworks features for the game include achievements, leaderboards, cloud saving and a Steam Workshop - allowing modders and mappers to create and share user-generated content.

The game will include an online versus mode, but there is no word on whether LAN play will be included. As LAN play was a pretty big mainstay of the original, it would be quite a disappointment to not see it included in this edition. The fairly modest updated system requirements for the game are as follows:

Minimum System Requirements:
Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 Pro
Steam Software Platform
900x600 minimum display resolution
Direct X 9 Capable GPU
1.2GHz CPU
1GB RAM
2GB HDD

That's a good point actually. I wonder if cheats will still work in it.

Because, you know, games tend not to have cheats nowadays.

Ikr. bring back the good old days of cheats. none of this achievement bs.

Oh yes, I saw this yesterday.
It was the best news I've heard since the original release.

I agree completely.

And for something a bit more on-topic: I'm loving that widescreen support. Was badly needed.

I think I just squealed a little with excitement.

First reaction, so much want.

But on second thought, I'm not sure why I'd buy this when I already have the original.

you can't see in game starter packs like sleeping dogs did, if some guy can just type it into chat

oddly enough they have also caught onto cheat engine and have lots of floating values as well, very annoying

Well, they did show a Cobra at the end of that trailer, so I don't know if that means cheats are back, or just that some things previously available as cheats are going to be available as some sort of special features.

Regardless... DO WANT!

Wow, Microsoft did something right? The end of the world is nigh.

This is really cool. Bravo M$.

The original has some annoying graphical glitches on newer systems, same with network multi. So that would be my reason.

Although it seems they haven't done anything besides bumping up the resolution. Which means Aztecs and Mayans will still have steel-clad Men-at-Arms running around.

Yes, that's my big complaint about one of my favourite games of all time. Not enough visual difference between civs.

EDIT: Also, no Slavs. That's the other one.

Did they stop doing GFWL yet? Hopefully they wont put it on this game, because it is the only thing that will stop me buying it.

There still is goddamn stop motion animation going on. what the hell.
You on weed, MS?

Reading the title was enough. I need a change of pants.

sounds really good. havent played it for ages and this is by far the best AoE game ever. played countless hours. just now i have graphical problems with it so this HD sounds just too good.

Didn't they announce a while back that they were bringing out a new expansion?

I seem to recall some thing about an AOE2 expansion.

I knew this was coming, but I didn't know it was an HD re-release.

WAT

This has made my morning :D

I remember playing this a lot as a child. I will definitely pick this up when my gaming pc is fixed.

well, i put in my pre order. even when its 10% off, still a lot of money in a way for an old game like this. but well, i know i will play it a lot and therefor worth the money :)

On the one hand, awesome. On the other hand:

If they're going to go to all the trouble of doing this, why go with such crappy low resolution? This is a PC-exclusive (for the moment at least) remastering of a PC exclusive game. Why do we constantly have to get stuck with TV resolutions when even many console ports do better than that?

I will contain my orgasms until I see how this turns out. There have been several HD remakes recently that were fucked up, even though people perceived them to be easy to make. Although, from the description at least, this seems like more of an HD "touch-up" than a remake.

The most important thing of all though, is how it handles online matchmaking. Since it's Steam-only (Microsoft...are you feeling alright?), I'm guessing there will be some sort of support so I can play with my friends without jumping through hurdles like in the original version. That alone would be enough to warrant a purchase for me.

Of course, it all depends on the price as well. If this launches at anything more than 15$, they can go away and leave me alone.

Right at the end of the video at the top it shows a load of monks healing a cobra car, so I'm guessing that there will be cheats.

19€ for what seems to be nothing more than a face lift seems a bit steep, especially for an almost 15 year old game.
Hopefully there will be more to it.

On the steam page it costs 19€, so some bad news for you i guess.

(Sorry for dubble post, didnt know if the quote would send a message if i edited it in)

Sweet I hope they do this to age of mythology as well that game was amazing, shame it gets kinda of forgotten.

The term (1080p) usually assumes a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, implying a resolution of 19201080. What's your PC monitor's resolution? If it's 1920x1080 then it is essentially a "1080p display". Sorry, it's kind of an industry buzzword.

Yeah, I just noticed. That's too much, not gonna be paying about half of what I paid for Heart of the Swarm for a 15 year old game that I already own twice. Gonna wait for a sale.

Yes. Good. Definitely going to be getting me a hold of this. Might wait for a sale first, but definitely getting it.

I WANT THIS... seriously, this game was my childhood... okay to be fair age of mythology took up more of my time. But wow, I need this. NOW!

Yeah, pretty much going to buy this right fucking now. I actually tried to buy the original AoE2 recently and I don't think its even available any more.
