Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Focuses On Survival Not Headshots

Collecting resources - including fellow survivors - could be key to your success in Terminal Reality's Walking Dead adaptation.

What with fan-made trailers and a general lack of information, you'd be forgiven for writing off Terminal Reality's The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct adaptation as a shooter with few aspirations beyond headshots. That's not so, claims Terminal Reality's Glenn Gamble; scavenging and making friends is more important to long-term survival than gunplay alone.

Your objective is to get Merle and Daryl Dixon from their Georgia home, to a military safe zone in Atlanta; but your main problem, the one that will torment you for most of the game, is gas. No fuel means your truck won't run, but getting fuel means looking around for supplies, and that will get you caught up in other survivors' drama. Those survivors have things that you need, and maybe they could also be useful in a fight; given some equipment, like a shotgun, they might even be able to scavenge for you. Or die in the attempt, of course, but that's the risk you take.

"[We] made all the resources you collect - be it the weapons you carry, the food - everything you get is shared across all of the survivors," says Gamble. The more survivors in your group, the more you can carry, and the more likely it is you'll survive the random zombie road encounters and other game events. But the truck only has so much space, so you'll have to decide who gets to come along, and who doesn't.

Or you may have to put some legwork in before they'll agree to join your group. "It's this cross-cut of the different types of people you would encounter," Gamble says. "Some have it better, some have it worse," he adds, and you may have to do some convincing to make the ones who have it better want to come with you.

Whether or not The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will actually work as Terminal Reality intends is something we'll be finding out for ourselves soon. This title is scheduled for a March 22, 2013 release on Wii U, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

Terminal Reality? More like... Terminal Reception. Because the game will suck. Yeah.

But yeah I really hate "Merrle and Derrle" as characters in the show so even if the gameplay is decent I'll probably end up hating this.

Does have Clementine in it?

It doesn't?

No dice.

By other survivors does he mean other players or AI companions. Because I think the unpredictability of real humans could give this game a real kick. Then again, it'd be nothing more than DayZ with an objective, wouldn't it?

No PC release?

Fools.

I'm ready for Fiddler's Green Pt2.

So, they're going to try to beat Telltale at their own game? Good luck with that.

The only way I could see this work is if they would make it more of an almost purely survival game, that has really nothing to do with The Walking Dead, but focuses on a randomized exploration and survival. You would have an objective, and a route to that objective that would vary from player to player.

But then again, I don't really know anything about the game, besides that it's an FPS, and I don't like assumptions so I'll wait for more information before making rash decisions. Maybe it'll turn out to be the bestest game ever. Who knows?

In writing this all sounds really nice, actually. A bit of a different take on survival. But without any actual gameplay or marketing of any description to back up these words, i'm still a huge skeptic for this game, though i do hope for the best.

It could turn out to be a text adventure at this rate.

No pc release, no buy. I don't feel like buying it on console and having it be unplayable in 5-6 months.

Ya sorry guys but you've already leaked the gameplay, we know you're lying, you made just another derp zombie shooter trying to sell some B movie actor for whatever reason.

No PC release? They must be afraid of money.

Why would it be unplayable in 5-6 months, just out of curiosity?

When the game's main feature is 'You get to play as Daryl' it sets off the alarm of crappiness.

Well, I'm slightly more interested in it now after I hear this, but I'm still not sold enough to buy it for my dust-gathering console.
Also truck? I was under the impression that they had motorcycles.
Also truck? Isn't that basically the antithesis of Daryl having a crossbow? Big loud truck attracting every walker for miles does not seem to be a smart survival choice.
A probable not buy still, I'll wait for the reviews.

The entire game is an escort mission? Escort missions are NEVER good or fun, so designing an entire game around the concept is a recipe for disaster. Then again, Terminal Reality's been around for quite a while and has a pretty good track record, so they really should know better. Maybe they're just being extremely cocky. If they do manage to make a good game here, it'll look VERY good for them.

P.S. Thanks

I've got a very bad feeling about this. I've got no real reason to, I've only seen one pre-alpha trailer and aside from the graphics, it looked half decent, but I just have a bad feeling.

So yeah, won't be passing up bioshock infinite for this.

That's another thing...why release it so close to bioshock infinite? You're already on shaky ground here, an underhyped, low key tie in title, why put it up against something that gamers have been going rabid over for fucking ages?

Because in my experience this generation of consoles are made of garbage that continously break down despite being taken care of. In 1-2 years 360 games in particular will be completely useless as working 360's become rarer and rarer due to their short life span.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense why there isn't a PC release. Which is unfortunate because from the sound of the game it sounds kinda interesting. Depending on reviews I would pry have bought it on Steam a few days after release. Their loss, if they don't want my money I will just spend it on something else.

In my experience, my current 360 has been working for 2 years, and has a lifetime warranty if it ever does red ring. I've also never heard of a Wii breaking down, or a PS3 other than that "yellow light of death" a few years back.

My Wii (got pretty close to launch) still works great, same with the PS3 (got 2-3 years ago). I never use my 360, so dunno about it.

OT: I'll probably pass on this game anyway. The redneck was the only character in the show that was close to being likable, and even then, I still cannot see what people see in the show. I watched the first two seasons of it, and the first episode of season three, and it more of just a "meh" show. It moved really slow, pretty much every character was annoying, a jerk, or unlikable in some other way. After finishing season two on Netflix I thought I'd be perfectly fine with never watching anymore of it and not feel like I missed a single thing.

Mr.Pandah:
I'm ready for Fiddler's Green Pt2.

I;m not the only one who played that cool to know.

OT: isnt this that crappy fps game that the escapist posted a story and some screens for a while back if so it sounds like its still dumb.

You mean his motorcycle is a better choice for riding through zombie infested lands?

Yes.

Congested highways filled with vehicles leave his motorcycle a much better choice.
The first bit was a complaint about not being canon with the show, the second was the practicality thing.

This sounds like Oregon Trail 2013. Instead of stopping your wagon for food, you stop for gas cans.

I'll pass, thanks.

Oregon Trail was the shit man. The pinnacle of Apple II entertainment.

No pc release so it's not like I could buy it anyway even if I wanted to but this just seems like a desperate attempt to do a quick cash in on the shows most popular character.

The textures look horribly rendered, giving the zombies a cheap plastic-y feel to them and I think we all know this will eventually devolve into just another 1st person shooter with zombies.

Also, no pc release?? Some people just don't even bother to hide their disgust for the pc market.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense why there isn't a PC release.

According to Wikipedia, IGN, Game Debate, Eurogamer, Giant Bomb and... well, the rest of the internet, really, it is getting a PC release. Mr. Karloff just didn't mention it because he clearly hates us and wants to pretend that we don't exist.

yep make a game about two of the most boring and obnoxious characters when you first meet them in the show. well i hope it actually turns out to live up to its hype

Thank You for the information. I had checked both Steam and Origin a few days ago but didn't see it. I just checked Steam again and it is on there now. That's cool it is getting a PC release.

Still waiting for actual gameplay to come out before I buy the game. Then again, I know plenty of people who wrote off Telltale's game until about Episode 3 came out so this could end up being a sleeper hit but who knows. For all I know this thing could be a diamond in a manure truck or a volatile bomb. Guess we'll find out on the 22nd if this game is any good.
