more mainstream. "For example, black nails and things like that - we don't have that any more. We want to make him a little bit more mainstream on that,"

Oh god.

They are gonna fuck this up so bad.

10 bucks sais glorified cod shooter with, if we are lucky, a bow and arrows instead of guns. Linear as hell and Mu chemical romance cover music.

Do they even KNOW what goth actually is? The old garrett sure as hell wasn't

Edit,

TheDoctor455:
Or that evil mage from Looking for Group.

But that mage was/is awesome. Haven't read that in a LONG while now but he was my favorite character in that whole thing

Remember the ESO trailer that had that one assassin jumping around and throwing knives? Based on what 'Garret' looks like, that feels like the tone of what this game will feel like - a Thief game only in name.

They must have started with the Crow but diluted him with the teen angst solvent and dressed him in designer sulkerware. Is he going to kill targets by switching their cassetes to his personal mixtapes?

Making fun of emos is still cool, right? I've been away for a bit.

I don't even know what the developers mean with "more action moves", but I already hate it!

after update:

you fucking twit!

why would you even mention this if it was something your team was struggeling with internally?

its 100% clear that people would get this wrong.

I loled, it was really dumb to compare it to something that we dont know about while there is something with the same name.

"No, not that Garret! THIS Garret, the one we never talked about."

Context, kids: It's important!

That being said... there was a more "goth" version than this!?

All I will say on the matter, is that if this new game is bad, I will not be able to stop myself from crying.

After the update there are two possibilities.

They were actually talking about their new design of garrett which they changed but thought everyone knew about. The whole something might be clear as day for you but might not be for others thing happens then.

OR

They realise they fucked up, and are now changing the design a bit all while using this as a cover story.

A little bit of faith is restored but they are on thin ice now.

Fill your water arrows with tears and then sneak inside Eidos?

Oh God, I'm getting a sickening feeling...

I'm a long-time fan of the Thief series. I've always thought it had a perfectly good story; not everything was given away immediately in it, and as the games progressed you found out more and more about the city Garret lived in and the factions that controlled it. Garret evolved as a character (somewhat) and the gameplay was simple but challenging. It was a perfectly fine formula, and if they're going to concentrate on story in this game, that can work, so long as they don't make radical, unnecessary changes to the rest of it. Maybe there will be more going on during the in-game periods that directly affects the plot instead of keeping it regulated to just cutscenes. That would be fine with me, just so long as they don't fuck up what already works.

BUT...I fear that's exactly what they're going to do. I'm worried they're going to make it linear as shit with almost no sense of exploration or free-roaming. Some people come down a bit on Thief: Deadly Shadows, but while I admit the levels weren't as sprawling and encouraging exploration as the previous two, it was still fun and had a certain amount of exploration. Maybe not as much as it could have, or should have, but nonetheless it was fun. If they turn thief into a predetermined path of linear corridors with no organic hiding or use of cover and shadows, make lockpicking a God damn QTE or pre-baked, one-button action...I'll be imitating Noah "Spoony" Antweiller and calling "BETRAYAL!!!!"

As for the redesign...well I guess it could have been worse, but frankly I don't think they needed to make him look like a damn vampire wearing eyeliner and dress him like a cookie-cutter rogue out of any generic fantasy game. Not that his original design didn't sort of have that look to him anyway, but it wasn't quite so...blatant. The difference is subtle, but it's there, particularly with that face-hugging lower mask. That, to me, just sort of says "I'm obviously trying to hide my identity."

And yes, they need to get Stephen Russell back as the voice of Garrett. If they don't, it's going to be a major letdown. Without him, they might as well just retire Garrett and hand the torch over to a new character (SPOILERS: Like what they hinted at in the end of TDS.)

DVS BSTrD:
I bet there will be cover based shooting and regenerating health.

And only savepoints because you can't call yourself AAA if you have quicksaves, it's for those dirty indie developers x.x

And I'd love to see the original if *that* is the less goth version o.O

Andy Chalk:
"We wanted to bring him more for the modern audience of today's console market," Cantin said. "He's now in the game doing more action moves and that's how we wanted the costume and the suit to reflect that."

WHAT. THE. FUCK?

Andy Chalk:
Perhaps even more interesting, and certainly more confusing, is Cantin's statement that Eidos has toned down Garrett's "gothic" look to make him more mainstream. "For example, black nails and things like that - we don't have that any more. We want to make him a little bit more mainstream on that," he explained. "Yes, he's a dark character, but we don't want really to say he's a gothic one, even though the Victorian period feels really gothic."

DID YOU EVEN PLAY THE ORIGINAL GAMES?

Kilo24:
Well, I can't say that I'm too optimistic. One major thing that was very interesting about Garrett's character was that he was aspiring to be nothing more than a thief, but he kept getting dragged into heroics. Thief 2 undermined that a little, Thief 3 a good bit more (partially due to declining writing quality.) It's hard enough to build a character like that once; I really doubt the abilities of people who aren't the original writers to do so again. Particularly when the character is becoming more ninja-like.

That also was unique (and still is) among games - you played a thief, not a sneaky melee fighter with two daggers who picks locks and disarms traps. In the first two games, it was a matter of professional pride to kill no one. The Dishonored influence undermines that; although it had rewards for not killing people, the majority of the abilities were focused around the opposite.

There is also the matter of writing the Hammerites and Pagans. Especially the Pagans, which - with their speech quirks and tree-hugging proclivities - could have easily become a joke instead of the delicately balanced mixture of whimsy and savagery they were in the first two games. Of course, the reboot might cut those factions out (probably to its detriment, since they are a critical part of the setting.)

Edit: And I watched the linked video. I was somewhat heartened by hearing them saying that he wasn't really trying to be a hero.

Then... what the hell?!?! The Joker from the Dark Knight is an inspiration for Garrett?! I honestly have no bloody idea how they drew a connection between the two. And I felt a little more hope die inside.

sageoftruth:
...

God forbid! I could not think of a worse game to have QTEs.

I can. "Press X to not be eaten by a grue!"

Nice. I think I'll forward that to a friend of mine.

Andy Chalk:
There are a couple of things to keep in mind here. One, Eidos Montreal took on Deus Ex, a project fraught with risk, and nailed it. Human Revolution was a proper, full-on and entirely satisfying DX game, and that buys the studio a LOT of credibility. Two, as others have mentioned, the look is less important than the man, and the man will be dependent upon The Man - Stephen Russell. I'm willing to put up with a lot, but if Stephen Russell isn't back on board it's going to be a problem. Remember when Rockstar first announced that it wasn't going to use James McCaffrey for Max Payne 3? Leaving out Russell would probably be even worse. A Robert Smith-esque Garrett I can handle, but the real test will be when the cast is announced.

I'M NOT FREAKING OUT

And if Garret was voiced by, let's say... Nolan North. How would you react?

Okay, the update sounds a bit more promising, though I hope the image in the article is the rejected, previous version. If that's the revised one, I'd hate to see what the original looked like.

The update makes me a bit more confident in the game. Maybe it's just back-pedalling but, hey, maybe we scared them enough to make a proper Thief game!

I just want to say I want a game where I run around in a forest as Abath.
GotY for sure.

Phew... Crisis averted then people? I hope so at least...

This looks a lot like Batman's league of shadows ninja costume from the first movie in the Dark Knight trilogy.

It's always OK to make fun of Emo's. To quote Randy Milholland "Remember, it's down the street, not across the road!"

Also, back on topic this is the is THE BEST description of the new character design, ever. I doff my cap to you, sir or madam.

Eh. So long as he acts and speaks as he did originally I doubt many will be that angry. That said, I am ever one to underestimate the strength of fan rage.

elilupe:
All I will say on the matter, is that if this new game is bad, I will not be able to stop myself from crying.

I know how you feel. I know my eyes watered a bit when I realized that Supreme Commander 2 wasn't even a shadow of the original game I grew to love. This news softens the blow a little more. I was so excited for Supcom 2 that I never saw a hint of anything wrong before release.

I'm just glad I downloaded the demo to get a taste of it before buying it. I did the same for Supcom 1, and I couldn't get a full copy fast enough.

I bet they don't give a shit about Garrett's new look. They just pulled that out now, so they can later say "Yeah, you hate the game just because Garrett wears eyeliner".

But seriously: From what i've read in this article, it seems to me that people at Eidos Montreal are confusing the meanings of "gothic" term, when it comes to Thief series.

Anyway, i plan to play in first person view, so as long as Garrett will sound like Stephen Russell, i won't mind. Unless, they'll fill missions with cutscenes, cause, you know "We're not still in 1998."

"We wanted to bring him more for the modern audience of today's console market," Cantin said. "He's now in the game doing more action moves and that's how we wanted the costume and the suit to reflect that."

"He's now in the game doing more action moves and that's how we wanted the costume and the suit to reflect that."

"Time has moved on," Narrative Director Steve Gallagher added. "We're not still in 1998."

"I was referring specifically to a previous Garrett design we tried out internally and not Garrett from the previous games."

Are we to understand that the team developing Thief 4 made a gothy Garrett concept design way back in 1998 and has now finally scrapped it in favour of the more classic design because Thief 4 is a more action-oriented game than the original ones so the Gareth that never looked like the Thief 1-2 Gareth doesn't fit the new gameplay as nicely as it would fit the classic one?
