pretty sure "red" is a women, what with the boobs and fishnets?

Y'know, I polled a bunch of people and they all came up with the idea that Red is a dude, but if there's this much debate about it, I'm gonna change the pronouns to be more gender neutral, just to be safe.

But in the end, it might be a dun-dun-DUNNNNNNN....computer program! *gasp* Or cyborg!

Well, ahem, looks promising, that's for certain! I will be keeping an eye on that for sure!

This looks unreservedly awesome. I had zero interest in Bastion mainly for 2 reasons. I hated the narrator's voice, and it was on xbox. Otherwise it looked interesting.

This however looks fantastic, and I especially like the music in the trailer and Red's design. In the article, before I clicked the video I was wondering why they referred to her as male when she looked clearly female.

Of course she could be a trans-sister, but probably not.

My pre order list now includes Saints Row 4 and this game.

Bastion is on XBox, windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and possibly Android. What I'm saying it is PLAY IT!

Having thoroughly enjoyed Bastion my interest in this game is definitely piqued. If the soundtrack is anyways near as good as Bastion's, I'll be getting that too.

Am I the only one amused by this game coming out right after we had a couple news stories talking about how publishers think videogames with women protagonists don't sell?

the answer is no, but i'm using a rhetorical device

HURRAY!!!!

I was just saying in a thread about a week ago that I will buy up whatever Supergiant makes next, and this is looking pretty great. Extremely similar to Bastion, but that's fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and Bastion was anything but broken.

Windknight:

its funny how the feminist bashers always turn up before the feminists isn't it. And they always accuse others of making trouble where there is none... oh the irony is so delicious.

I think he's just sick of the idiots claiming sexism is rampant through the industry and that we can't have a game that's fun to play without a thousand whiteknighters breathing down our necks trying to guilttrip everyone who might enjoy it.

The irony is that by far most feminists and supporters have no idea what they're fighting for, just that they feel they've been cheated somehow. Or maybe the irony is that they should try and do something about it, instead of asking everyone else to do it for them. Or maybe the irony is that the poor way the subject has been handled(for example, responses such as yours) has only made sure that any future debate will be sour and might as well be avoided on forums such as this one.

I get the feeling that this strong female protagonist who rides motorcycles and wields a badass sword, will only be seen as a "male wannabe".

I'm a fan of Bastion and I trust Super Giant to create their next game with as much love and attention.

No one's ever alone. I still find it sad though that the talks about the protagonist's gender started up from page 1.

Can't you guys at least wait until the game is released?

Well I know what to expect from this game already.

It's going to have an amazing soundtrack (that trailer song kicks ass), it's going to have a great art style, and it's going to have some good characterization.

Sign me up please!

sold!

I know I shouldn't be this into buying a game before release but... I can't help it. Sold.

You snipped crucial white text - I'm quite aware that I'm never alone. I read the Critical Miss comic. :P

And yeah, that is kindof sad. Slightly less so when they were talking about the game industries fear of female protagonists, but I agree that it really shouldn't be an issue that the main character happens to have breasts.

That running animation is fucking annoying. I hope to god they change it.

That said, visuals seem nice, and that song is gorgeous.

.... I never noticed that. Wow, I'm an idiot.

Well anyway, is there any bets on what kind of story this will be? Or is it too premature?

I have the feeling that it's going to be a lot more introspective than Bastion. Bastion was in it's own twisted kind of way, a save the world scenario, whereas I can't help getting a Blade Runner/Deus Ex vibe from this.

Especially amusing, seeing as you had to delete the white text in order to snip it. :P

And on the storyline, same. But I don't think we have quite enough to go on yet.

Hell yes. I loved everything about Bastion except the way the story was told, so I'm more than willing to hop into this!

Both protagonists have short, non-descript names that will likely prove more important to the overall plot than we might first suspect.

...what was so secretly important about "The Kid?"

KoudelkaMorgan:

It's on PC, too, Steam. If you can get past the voice. Honestly, I love Logan Cunningham's voice, but the narration put me off-kilter, too (it was like having someone read the novelization at you over your shoulder while you're trying to get immersed). Luckily for me, every other aspect of the game more than made up for it.

That's interesting, because I immediately thought it was a woman. (which, judging by other comments in the thread is confirmed conclusively by a statement on the developer's website which explicitly states Red is a ).

But going on the video alone, early on we see a shot of Red that shows she appears to be wearing a short yellow dress under that jacket, (and the cut of it is typical of women's tops that are intended to show some degree of cleavage. - Not a common design for male clothing.)

Further, several of the depictions are suggestive of the style of 1920's/1930's female jazz singers, and aspects of the song in the trailer also kind of give the impression that its Red herself singing it.

All those points aside you really would've saved yourself a lot of headaches by doing some very basic research.

A direct quote from Supergiant games's blog: "In Transistor, players assume the role of a young woman who gains control of a powerful weapon after a mysterious group of assailants nearly kills her with it."

Knowing the name of the game, and the name of the developer, it took all of about 30 seconds to find this blog.
Is it really so much to expect a published article on a website to contain just a tiny bit of research to back it up?

Give the guy a break, mistakes happen. Sometimes even I miss obvious information from trailers and blogs, which can be embarassing, but isn't a crime.

"It's Red's turn"

Well, let's hope he brought all his pokemon.

Really liking that art-style. Unfortunately though, it looks like it's going to have some rather similar core gameplay to Bastion which I didn't enjoy too much in of itself. The dynamic narration system was well done but the actual combat didn't really engage me too much. Hope they're successful though.

Just want to jump in and say, as a big fan of bastion, I'm so glad it's not a sequel.

As much as I want to explore that world again and learn more about it, anything else set in that universe would totally invalidate the ending. I'm glad they're doing something they know resonates with fans and it looks like a game they have the ability to do well- with all the team learned on bastion.

This just rocketed to my most anticipated game of next year list, but please please be on steam at release this time. So many of your fans are on PC because of the humble promotions it seems a shame not to cater to them.

Goofguy:
Is it me or is the singer in the trailer's music the same as Zia from Bastion? Would make sense, but just curious if anyone else noticed that.

I think it is the same voice...but dammit why did you have to remind me of the level you meet her on? ;_;

OT: I enjoyed Bastion, but I'll make my decision once more info comes out. Certainly intriguing though.

'Whiteknighters' and your whole argument goes down the shitters.

If you think that criticism of aspekts of the industry is trying to guilttrip people then you have a big problem.

On Topic: Love it already.

Well, these guys made Bastion, and even if the graphics look a little small right now i'm sure its gonna be awesome when its released....2014 cant come soon enough!

Classic denial.

Classic low content post.

Sorry, please point me towards the hoard of people that say that you should feel bad about enjoying games that may have problems with sexism?

You must be knew here.

Back on topic, I really, really want the game. I can understand them using the same play style probably because it's cheaper then to develop a new one (copy pasta code and all that), but I hope they don't do things like the narration again, I feel that doing that will ruin it's effectiveness and uniqueness I felt when I played Bastion for the first time.

Sweet Jesus, YES! Bastion was an amazing little game, and if Transistor only gets close to it, it's gonna be great.

You say my post is low-content, yet it managed to convey the same message as yours did, in two words :)

Look, bottom line is that I have no interest in discussing anything with you. You seem to have nothing interesting to add.
But as an answer, you might want to look at this forum and your own posts. They're pretty good examples.

Ciao

The color palette and artwork remind me of this long forgotten gem:

ToastiestZombie:
INB4 someone calls this game sexist because Red shows cleavage and doesn't have much characterization.

OT: Yes! I don't care that it looks a lot like Bastion, I didn't want Supergiant Games to get into fucking kart racing or something, it looks fantastic. Gameplay similar to Bastion in an original Cyberpunk world and a seemingly new art-style? Sign me up!

Besides, why is looking like Bastion a -bad- thing? Bastion was an excellent game with an awesome aesthetic and fantastic music. Definitely going to get me a copy of this. ;D

people complaining the game is sexist because the heroine is female and shows some cleavage: 0

People complaining that feminists overeact and ruin everything: 2, including yourself.

Again, your trying to start a fight where ther is none, while blaming the other side for starting fights where there are none.

So show any post of mine that states that when I state criticism about a game I also want to say that the audience who liked it should feel bad about it. Go on, I have time.

I feel that you can't comprehend that no one gives a fuck if you liked something. Good for you. It still can have problems and you are in no way related to them.

But like you said: I feel that you have nothing interesting to add except empty phrases that paint anyone who tries to disagree with you as a 'whiteknight'.

It's very difficult to come to the conclusion that Red is a man if you watch the actual trailer. Unless this theoretical male Red were a very effeminate crossdresser, at which point all bets are off.

Which is kind of why the gender confusion of the original poster reminded me of Yellow Belmont from Mospeada, (AKA Lancer in Robotech), a male freedom fighter who cross dresses as a female singer. Either way an interesting character idea, especially if they keep a musical theme to the game.

Yeah, OK, that was a little harsh, I know. But the standards online seem to be so low that it makes me wonder what the point even is reading anything mentioned in the 'news' on a site like this.

Lol. Yes. Of course... Sorry. I had to laugh because I just ranted at someone for not doing research, and that statement can be boiled down to the same thing. (Were it not for the fact that it's a stock phrase.)
After all, if you'd even glanced at the post you're quoting itself you'd spot my join date...

Thanks for giving me a good laugh though. XD
