Metal Gear Solid V Drops David Hayter As Voice Of Solid Snake

image

Following this morning's appearance of the first trailer for Metal Gear Solid V, David Hayter has apparently confirmed that he won't return as the iconic voice of Solid Snake.

"Well look, at least I had a good run."

That simple message was written by voice actor, writer and director David Hayter on his Twitter account a few hours ago. The run he was referring to was his tenure as the iconic voice of gaming's most popular spy, Metal Gear Solid protagonist Solid Snake. As most of you are already aware, the debut trailer for Metal Gear Solid V was released earlier today, and fans immediately questioned Hayter as to his involvement with the project. Though the Hollywood jack of all trades offered no specifics, it appears the he's not been hired to reprise his role for Snake's latest adventure.

Following that initial tweet, a fan pointedly asked Hayter if Konami had even attempted to hire him for the role, and his reply was short and to the point. "Nope," Hayter states simply.

This is sad news for those who've become accustomed to Hayter's gravelly baritone, but it must also come as a terrible shock to Hayter himself who has often expressed a great fondness for the role, both as an actor and as a genuine fan of gaming. When Silicon Knights remade the original Metal Gear Solid for the GameCube in the form of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes Hayter reportedly lobbied fellow voice actors to return for the title expressly so it would be an accurate recreation of the original game, at least aurally.

The big question now is which voice actor Konami has tapped to fill Hayter's undoubtedly large shoes. Hopefully the company won't leave us waiting long for this revelation as it seems increasingly crucial now that Hayter is apparently off of the project. Our only hope is that Konami didn't hire one of gaming's more cliche voices. We enjoy the work of Nolan North and Steven Blum as much as the next person who's played a thousand games featuring their vocal talents, but Solid Snake is a uniquely gruff character who deserves better than the same, tired voiceover featured in a half-dozen random goons found in any given Activision or EA shooter.

Oh, and don't think we haven't considered the possibility that this might be an elaborate ruse courtesy Hideo Kojima. The man loves to play games with his fans' expectations - Metal Gear Solid 2 is proof of that. If it turns out that Hayter has been enlisted to mislead Metal Gear Solid devotees at the behest of Kojima, we reserve the right to tip our hats to the Metal Gear creator and update this story with praise for his hilariously twisted sense of humor.

One has to wonder if the new guy will retain Hayter's compulsion to repeat the last to words of the preceding sentence.

Gotta be a ruse.

There's no way they'd just drop Hayter.

He is Solid Snake.

I sense tricksy Kojima shenanigans.

Snake?

SNAKE?!?

SNAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!

*Game Over theme*

This would be like Garrett from Thief being played by someone *not* Stephen Russell... Some people just ARE that character.

...though it would be funny if they got Egoraptor to do Snake's voice instead... heh...

That's not Hayter, it's a weird quirk of translating Japanese to English while also having to match up lip animations. Presumably he doesn't stand in line at the grocery store only to respond to the checker with " ... paper or plastic?!"

Knowing Kojima, he's just pulling our collective tentacles legs. Or at least that's what I hope.

Good thing we'll be playing as Big Boss then isn't it?

Given the fashion in which this game has been revealed, I'm very much inclined to agree. Would explain why Snake (or rather "none of the Snakes") never uttered a single word in the trailer.

The internet, always there to be pedantic :D

Snake?..

Snake?....

SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE?! D:

I'm saddened by this news and the news konami didn't contact him about this is annoying and sheds some light on the rustlings and Hayter's own bloggings.

I hope the new uy is good because those are some seriously big boots to fill.

They dropped him as the voice for Big Boss. I suspect shenanigans are in play and we will hear from Solid snake at some point in the game. Why yes, I am in the denial stage, why do you ask?

If this is true then MGS is permanently off my radar. I refuse to play an MGS game in which David Hayter isn't the voice of Solid Snake or Big Boss. You can fuck with Hitman and you can fuck with Sam Fisher, but don't fuck with Snake. MGS is far more story and character driven than most other games. His voice is his character. Take that away and you're left with nothing. Might as well reboot the damn thing.

no, no, no no no no no no no no no this is a hoax, it has to be, or they just haven't got around to contacting him yet

Yeah, definitely saddened by this news - if of course it isn't just Kojima fucking with everyone as he has the tendency to do sometimes.

The man just is Snake. And like I said in the other MGS news piece, it seems like protagonists with a distinctive voice are becoming a thing of the past and every male lead is going to sound like Nolan North.

... Well, I'm gonna go and cry myself sleep. Unless... this is a clever ruse!? It has to be, they wouldn't just get rid of David!

Kevin Conroy might be able to fill those collosal shoes...but honestly no one can.

Also captcha is "can't have nice things" O.o

Sounds dubious to me. Snake is to Hayter as Plisskin is to Russell.

I would say that I am surprised but I am not. Konami is trying their best to just take all of their major titles, and smash them into the dirt. They pretty much killed Silent Hill (fucked up the HD collection. The game was made amazing already and they fucked it up somehow), Castlevania is turning into another generic button masher, and now they are working on killing MGS.

DAMN YOU KONAMI! DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!

You've not only earned my ire for this, but you have now killed my inner child off completely by yanking the little guy off of life support while cackling madly. The poor guy worshipped snake as much as i did! So thanks for that..it just won't be the same without David.

Adam Jensen:
Might as well reboot the damn thing.

DON'T GIVE THEM IDEA'S! We already have enough shitty reboots, we don't need them destroying MGS as well.

....By the way, if we do end up with an MGS reboot..I'm blaming you.

Daystar Clarion:

I sense tricksy Kojima shenanigans.

I dunno, Kojima's been disappearing up his own ego in the last couple of years.

Like when proudly showing of Revengeance to the press it was him that walked out onto the stage and showed off 'his' game (was it the 2011 Spike's? Can't remember). Then when the reaction was let's say... muted, suddenly it's Platinum Games fault and he's publishing videos of the development team apologising for the crappy job they've done while he says it's nothing to do with him. It was a very public humiliation for people he was all too keen to pretend didn't exist when the hype was on his side.

I hope you're right, but if you're not then it smacks of 'no one can be famous for Metal Gear than me' syndrome.

There IS the possibility that they're trying to transition to Big Boss's voice as heard in MGS4, when he had a different voice actor from Solid Snake. It's likely David Hayter will still play the role of Solid Snake if he makes another appearance.

I'd be surprised if he could even do the voice after playing Old Snake in MGS4...

That had to kill his voice...

New World Fool:

Shut up Adachi.

OT:
This is clearly a prank right?
Kinda like with Raiden in MGS2 right?
Kojima your pulling our legs again right?
RI................ RIGHT?!

It wouldn't be the same without Hayter. Guess the guy was tired of the same role. Though this man was dedicated to the role before, I think he was willing to give up half his pay in the Twin Snakes remake just to make sure the rest of the cast would return. If that voice we heard in the trailer was suppose to be him.... at least get a grizzled sounding person. It doesn't feel right man.

Oh fuck no. We better be getting some mother fucking David Hayter or Kojima is gonna have a full on revolution on his hands.

Daystar Clarion:

This is exactly what was going through my head.

But to be fair, denial is the first stage of grief.

Indeed Hayter, you had a good run.

Although Kojima you better not be pulling a MGS3 intro on me here. I'm not falling for the bait and switch twice. Knowing the internet perhaps a internet leak of the credits will shed some light on Kojima's shenanigans.

Speaking of Raiden... he's the new voice actor for Snake! Quinton Flynn as Raiden as Solid Snake! It's brilliant!

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan I think we all know this is a joke/hoax. It's like when they tried to say Phantom Pains had nothing to do with the series and was a new IP. I don't buy it.

That's what I'm thinking of as well.

I never played any of the MGS games, but I love them from the let's plays and stuff I've seen. No David Hayter would make me a sad panda, but if its for that same guy in MGS4, then I would at least be OK.

Ppl, come down. Reason for Snake to not have Voice in the game is April 1st.

(Yahzee voice on)

David not returning to play Snake. "Oh, no" sad the fans "What are we going to do?".

"Tro-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo" sad Kojima "Its April 1st, Bitches!"

(Yahzee voice off)

Its a joke, it has to be, you don't do Animation of the character fist, and then put the voiceover artist last. This is all a Joke from our friendly troll Kojima. Case closed.

It's okay everyone, just play the game muted with the subtitles on and pretend it is Hayter doing the lines! It'll work. Please let it work! D:

Considering that Kojima has reportedly been upset with every single localization of his games, this sounds legit to me. The gravelly clint eastwood voice was developed by the original localization team, and Kojima didn't like the liberties they took with the translation. Seems entirely plausible he would lobby to replace Hayter now that he has the clout to do so. Sometimes I think the MGS games are successful despite Kojima, rather than because of him.

Well, that sucks :(

It won't be the same without Guyver David's charming gravelly voice.

Yup. Peace Walker had inordinate production values for a PSP game as Kojima wanted it to be MGS 5. When it didn't sell he had it put in the HD Collection to "reach a wider audience." Now he's making another Big Boss prequel game? It's like he can't let things go. WE MUST APPRECIATE HIS GENIUS!!!11
