Square Enix "Preparing" Final Fantasy Versus XIII Announcement

image

Square Enix has apologized for the lack of updates and is asking fans to "wait just a little more."

The road for Final Fantasy Versus XIII continues to be a long and tumultuous one. Originally announced in 2006 as part of Square Enix's Fabula Nova Crystallis collection, the seven years since have seen multiple delays with prospects for an actual release of the anticipated title falling further and further into doubt. These doubts haven't been helped much by Square Enix, which has been somewhat tight-lipped on the game. This lack of information isn't something the publisher has been oblivious to, however, and waiting fans may soon have news to help get them a bit closer to the game's long delayed release.

Speaking recently on Square Enix Radio, Tetsuya Nomura, the director of Versus XIII acknowledged the company's silence and promised details on the game's progress soon. "The date when we can concretely lift the ban has been decided and we are preparing for that moment," said Nomura. "Maybe the details as to why information couldn't be released might be touched upon at the next information announcement." Despite the years long wait, Nomura implored fans to remain patient. "I'm sorry it's already overdue, but please wait just a little more."

That might be a tall order for some, considering the duration they've been waiting. Versus XIII has been in development since before its 2006 reveal and while you can chalk up some delays to development difficulties, there are limits to what's understandable. This is especially the case when you consider that Square Enix has, in the same time period, managed to complete Final Fantasy XIII and develop a full-fledged sequel with another on the way.

Hmm... It's either going to be "Final Fantasy 13 Versus is cancelled", or "Final Fantasy 13 is now Final Fantasy 15". Or, it could be that Final Fantasy 13 has become part of Final Fantasy 13-3.

Any takers?

They're going to withhold it till the next generation.

Ever since people learned it was just another game with KingdomHearts-style gameplay, people stopped caring. The only thing holding anticipation nowadays is the hope that it'll actually strive to be something good. The trailers actually looked really nice.

Regardless, an announcement for an announcement is stupid.

I'm calling it now: Final Fantasy XVersus, on PS4.

So, they're announcing the upcoming announcement?

I miss the days when i could look forward to a final fantasy game. They are just total garbage now. I tell a lie i am looking forward to a final fantasy, final fantasy 3 on the OUYA.

Sorry, I'm sure that you speak for everyone, but I know a lot of people that love the KH series, and a Final Fantasy game with it's gameplay is hardly a bad thing.

I hope to god it has not aged too terribly, and I hope that they don't try to explicitly try to link it with the shit that is FF13.

It's basically become Square's Half-Life 3.

I dread the possibility that 'uber-popular' Lightning will be in the game.

Likewise, many people enjoyed FF13, including myself. It had great graphics, a linear story, angsty characters, and awesome locations; it contained everything every game in the proper FF series has done since aside from a pilotable airship.

You and many others didn't enjoy FF13.
I and many others didn't enjoy Kingdom Hearts.

Haven't they been "promising details on the game" and telling people "to wait just a little longer" since early 2007? I like the look of this game, but damn am I unsure if I want to support it after all the shit we've had to deal with.

And a piece of advice Square: Please don't expect it to sell a zillion copies then be disappointed.

The announcement will be that Versus is coming out for the PS4, and some people will buy a PS4 to play Versus,
then the game will get delayed and this time, eight years or so from now, we'll get another announcement stating that Versus will be for the PS5.

Seems to be a terrible terrible trend of this going around. I'll actually become less interested in something when they do this.

I was wondering a while back if they were gonna release it for the PS4 since they've said nothing other than "it's being made and not dead", so it looks like that will be the case.

Would be pretty neat if it was a launch title.

It's been 7 freaking years. Why are people even expecting it to be good when we've seen just how shitty games with crazy long dev times can be.

I really hope that they announce a 360 version though. They did it for FF13 so why not this?

Does anyone really care THAT much about Final Fantasy anymore outside of it's most die hard fanbase? I can only speak for myself as a former Final Fantasy fan but I fell out of the series quite a while ago.

Sorry guys, but I've gotta call it. This game for the amount of time it will take for them to actually release, it just won't be worth the wait. I'll bet you that it won't be worth the wait and it will be a huge disappointment after its release.

Being hopeful though, I suppose. There is always a chance that it will be good, but odds are against this game, and I pray that I am absolutely wrong on this one. <:(

I hope they were prepared to announce they're preparing to announce.

ScrabbitRabbit:

I'm leaning more towards Daikatana myself, but realistically, it'll probably just be another Final Fantasy 12.

When a game isn't released for 7 years it means it's probably going to be a bad game and the best case scenario is it's never released

errr...what? for the most part, people loved kingdom hearts gameplay, it is definitely different from final fantasy, but by no means is it bad by any stretch. i have no idea where you're getting your information from on mass amounts of people thinking otherwise.

OT: excited for this, i loved the trailers when i saw them and definitely wanna see more on the atmosphere/world, it looked very interesting.

Wow, Square really screwed up with this game, for a game that was going to be a PS2 game, to a PS3 launch title, to a PS4 launch title, this game is a prime example of development hell (along with Half-Life 3) I just hope it lives up to the hype it is getting.

Seriously, I forgot all about Versus 13.

Folks, this isn't an announcement of an announcement. If you read the article carefully, you'll note that this simply Nomura answering an interview question with regards to when new information will come out about the game. I'm personally still looking forward to this. You can say it wouldn't be worth the wait, but if they had never revealed it until this year and said it was due out next year, but went on to say it's been in development for 8 years, would you still say it's not worth the wait?

I know. Square Enix is the worst at this, though. I think they've actually announced more games than they've made or released recently. They announced Final Fantasy XIV before Final Fantasy XIII was even on store shelves.

FFXIV had been in production since nearly 2005 IIRC. It had been in development for a long time, so announcing it before XIII was on shelves is not a big deal.

I feel like your use of the same words, namely "many others", to describe both games' dissenters GROSSLY misrepresents the reality of how the two games were actually received critically...

Considering the game sucked so hard they had to redo the whole thing, and it's still not officially "relaunched", doesn't that mean the game STILL isn't done and they DID announce it way too early?

I would probably just make it into 15 if I were them. Gives them more time to work on 16 for the PS4, plus whatever time and place versus is in looks completely from 13 anyway. Besides they're in money saving mode and would love a excuse not to spend money on another game.

Or the announcement is now FF 13 Versus is now *drumroll* FF13-4!!!

Nah, that just means it was an awful game.

I just don't understand how its taken this long, who honestly thought XIII looked better then Versus and decided to concentrate more on that game. Not only that but XIII is considered a disappointment. Not only that! Square is trying to dig it in, begging people to love Lightning with 2 sequels. Take the hint she's a boring character, XIII is a failure and more on, Versus actually looks fair good.
As good as it looks I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be another Duke Nukem though.

Well if its for the PS4 then I am going to miss that particular game. SE no longer holds the pull to make their games a system seller. At best its something to buy on sale sometimes.

If this gets postponed to the next generation I'll get angry.
Not because I want this game (I barely play JRPGS), but only because I consider it breach of contract.

I am not kidding, one of the reasons I decided to buy a PS3 was the announcement of The Last Guardian. I saw the highlights of Sony's E3 presentation (don't remember the year, and won't bother to check) with God Of War 3, The Last Guardian and this game (I think).
That was the moment that I thought "screw it, I am getting into this generation". Less than a month later I had bought an 80 Gigs FAT PS3.
200 hours of Demon's Souls later, I can't say that I regret buying it... But perhaps I would have waited another year. Perhaps I would have bought an Wii or Xbox 360. (nah, who am I kidding?!)
But that's beside the point.

To me, if they announce a game and then decide to change its platform it is FALSE ADVERTISEMENT. Plain and simple.
Developers really should take more care before announcing things up, down and sideways. Some of us think it is serious.

On the one hand, I wary.

On the other, Nomura has done fantastic work in the past so I've kinda come to trust him with what he does.

On the third(?) hand, HURRY THE FUCK UP WITH KINGDOM HEARTS 3!!11!

Oh look, Square Enix announcing an announcement, who's have thought.
There was a time when I couldn't wait to get my hands on this game I knew next to nothing about. But that was a long time ago... I time before Final Fantasy XIII happened...
