Vin Diesel Chokes A Bird In Debut Riddick Trailer

Our first solid glimpse at Riddick has finally arrived. No hyperbole: It's kinda rad.

I'll go to my grave swearing that Vin Diesel was born in the wrong decade. Had Mr. Diesel been in his twenties during the 1980s he very easily could have achieved Schwarzeneggerian levels of stardom as a Hollywood action hero, but in our modern era there's just so very few chances for a chiseled, gravel-voiced actor to win acclaim by murdering dozens of whichever vile fiends are stupid enough to cross his path.

Still, Diesel occasionally offers us a glimpse at what this alternate past may have looked like. To wit: The trailer embedded above, which serves as the debut look at the upcoming Riddick, the third entry in a sci-fi franchise that includes Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, a couple of animated features, and two of the finest videogame adaptations to ever emerge from the generally unholy collaboration between Hollywood and the gaming biz.

Go ahead, hit play. We don't want you to miss any of it, so we'll wait for you.

Done? What'd you think? Rad, huh?

Obviously a trailer isn't much to go on, but we're happy to see that Riddick relies heavily on the general-purpose badass appeal of its titular, antihero protagonist. Both of the previous movies in the franchise were successes almost entirely due to Diesel's menacing presence and that theme appears to return in spades for Riddick.

Further, we appreciate the world-building seemingly in place here. Everything in the trailer looks distinctly alien, yet with enough of a human touch to remain grounded and accessible to audiences hoping for a few hours of simple, cathartic violence.

Expect Riddick to hit theaters on September 16, 2013. That's only a few months off, so you've got permission to amp up your anticipation starting now.

So basically it's Pitch Black remade with the crew replaced by Not Colonial Marines?

That sounds badass!

Pitch Black and Chronicles are two of my great guilty pleasures, this doesn't even need to be that good to make me happy, although it would be even better if it is.

Looks like they're going back to the Pitch Black formula of Riddick being a badass criminal with a bunch of space jockies on a hostile-alien infested planet. This should serve well to win back the people that didn't like Chronicles because of the whole Necromonger (think that's what they were called) deal.

Personally I enjoyed both the movies and I won't deny that I'm not looking forward to this one.

Yeah, that's all great. But where's the video game Vin? WHERE IS IT?!

The best Riddick movie yet is the game though...

Pitch Black was a very cool movie but it doesnt go anywhere big, it was a cool small story and the sequel was just a mess. The game really set an awesome tone and told a more interesting story.

This one at least is closer to the first movie so I'm looking forward to it

Oh a prequel, that's nice.
Just hope it turns out better then Prometheus.

I'll see your "Rad" and raise you a "Gnarly". It looks remeniscent of Pitch Black, crossed with the non-necromonger part of Chronicles Of Riddick, which is a good thing. Plus I know I won't need to persuade my wife to come and see it with me.

Please tell me that Batista's not in it. There's a merc in the trailer that looks a lot like him.

Well, i approve of this.

Aint gonna lie, been wanting a third riddick movie ever since i saw the second one.

Started watching this trailer happy, ended it with a grin of how awesome this is gonna be.

If this were any other franchise then I would be tearing it a new orifice for reusing the exact same plotline as a previous installment.

But this is Riddick. Watching Vin Diesel whittle down the enemy numbers, get captured, then get released due to a much larger threat is what the whole series is about.

I hope it's good.

Thus far the series has been pretty solid.

Sorry, I have to ask. What makes you think it's a prequel? It has Karl Urban's character Vaako from Chronicles of Riddick in it.

So... it's like the first movie, only the same? I mean, the action does look good, yeah, but what the fuck? You could easily make a badass prequel by making a movie out of the Butcher Bay game.

The effects are a little bad in places at the moment, but I love Riddick and I love Vin Diesel, so I'm looking forward to this

Oh, really? I just figured with the way Chronicles ended, and the fact that somebody had to have captured Riddick in the first place for Pitch Black to occur.

riddick, monsters and mercs. i have simple tastes :D

Pretty much this. I didn't mind Chronicles that much, felt a bit overstuffed and nothing like Pitch Black, but it's watchable. I'd still rather a new film was more like Pitch Black though, that film was a lot of fun.

Why do I get the feeling that, when Vin Diesel plays D&D (or any RPG for that matter), he favors the rogue classes?

Looks like fun. Will definitely be looking forward to it.

I've always been curious about Riddick. I want to play the games/see the movies (beyond a few bits and pieces), and the whole almost steam punk-yet-Aliens aesthetic was always a plus in my eyes. It seems ripe with potential... and Vin Diesel seems to really own the character, even if it is still Vin Diesel as a space rogue/assassin.

What's so awful about the second movie, just to be clear?

I hope it doesn't riff too much from Pitch Black, but still, nice to see Riddick getting back to what he does best. Chronicles had its moments, but Pitch Black was undoubtedly the better film. As long as they inject some fresh ideas alongside the aliens, I should hopefully enjoy this.

Also... Holy shit! Starbuck's in this?

The first film was awesome, and the games were phenomenal. Definitely check them all out.

What's so awful about the second movie, just to be clear?

It wasn't a bad film, but it did some different things not very well.

The first film was a gritty, dirty sci-fi film in the Alien mould, with an amoral badass as the main character, and a rather low-key horror-esque plot. The games took that idea and ran with it, the first one essentially being a game where you break Riddick out of jail.

The second film tried to go all space-opera with this huge evil army going round wiping out worlds, and Riddick being called to save the galaxy, etc etc. It wasn't a bad film, but it didn't have a lot in common with the first one, and didn't do the space opera thing as well as it could have done.

I have a huge, completely heterosexual man crush on Vin Diesel, and Riddick is one of my favorite series ever...

Needless to say, I eagerly await September...

Hmm, on the one hand it looks kind of like a retread of the first movie. On the other hand the first movie was awesome. So kind of balances out on the side of awesome there

Adam Jensen:

There were two already? Unless there was a 3rd that was announced randomly.

Looks to be without soul or any decent plot or character development. Which wouldn't be so bad if the special effects and action sequences didn't look so cheap. I'll give this one a miss, methinks.

that sentence makes no sense

Terramax:

You can tell that from a trailer? You'd have to be psychic to know that.

I know its not a teaser but seriously there's no way to know anything except a general overview of the plot & some of the key action sequences. Whether a plot is decent depends on the details which you don't get from a trailer, character development takes alot of screen time over the course of a movie.

It looks pretty decent except for some places, which I assume will be polished out by the time the movie is released.

My thoughts exactly, if its like Pitch Black or Escape from Butcher Bay then I'm happy.

i wouldn't worry too much about that.

Vin is a huge gamer and was deeply and directly involved in the creation of the first game (far moreso that people such as him usually are) and probably the second as well (although that i don't know for sure).

i would be shocked if there wasn't a game.

Sure, it's a neat trailer but how many times is Riddick gonna find himself on a planet ruled by vicious creatures that live in the dark?

So it's essentially a remake of Pitch Black. Precisely what I wanted. A remake of a medicore and forgettable movie. The subject line is accurate. Vin Diesel chocks his chicken for all to see.

the antithesis:

^^

lol

tbh i have very little problems with a "back to basics" attempt at reinvigorating the franchise.

i think most people would probably agree the 2nd film "went too big".

Frankly, that anyone outside of Vin Diesel cares about Riddick baffles me. I saw Pitch Black and didn't care. I saw trailers for the other one, and didn't care enough to see it. I guess there's games and other stuff, too, but as a franchise it's like a cinder block on the starting line. I must not be alone in my not really liking the character or else it would have been a lot more popular than it was. The franchise wouldn't need to be invigorated if it had any vigor in the first place. To paraphrase a wiser man than I, going back to mine the last film you're sure was good just isn't very classy.

Redoing Pitch Black, essentially, just seems desperate and almost an admission of defeat. They can't make this character work except in the first movie, so they'll just do it again.

"well, there's no accounting for taste" or to put it another way ofc its a subjective exercise.

i did like the first film. i was disappointed in the second and didn't like the direction it went.
you are right that the franchise is barely off the starting line but i always thought it had potential.

if you just didn't like any of it however ofc you're not going to be all that into any new iteration.

we don't have to all like the same things and agree on some value of their worth.

i will say this tho: from a gamers pov the first Riddick game is widely agreed to be one of the best games on the original xbox and a lot of the reason for that is put down to Vins direct involvement in its creation and the fact that, as i mentioned before, he's a huge gamer and thus had an informed and critical eye that actually enhanced the development of the game.

this point lends the franchise a little more kudos in the eyes of many gamers (because to us its not just a film franchise).
something reflected in this very thread where the 3rd post chimes in with "Yeah, that's all great. But where's the video game Vin ?"

from the looks of it Riddick wearing Necromonge ( or however the fuck you spell that) armor and yet doesn't seem to have this army ..... that could be interesting .

I still maintain that Pitch Black was legitimately a good movie . While Chronicles on the other hand was kind of lame and had so much blur i could never tell what the fuck is going on . so it's nice to see them going back to formula .

wasn't Riddick space Jesus after the last movie?
and my god is that a terrible trailer, it gives away the whole damn movie, why not have it end with him in chains?

teebeeohh:

because that's not how it ends.

if you don't want spoiler hints as to how this movie potentially ties into what has gone before i would suggest you avoid the movies wikipedia page...then again if you are the kind of person that doesn't mind a few pointers...

Essentially, only now the environmental trigger appears to be rain instead of darkness. Besides that, it looks to be another take on the Pitch Black story. I just don't think they're going to get the same vibe out of a group of seemingly cookie-cutter bounty hunters as they did from the originals hodgepodge of random civilian survivors. Still, they might get it to work.
