Anti-Game Critic Says "This Generation Will Give You Massacres"

This guy's just straight up lying. I didn't start playing GTA till I was at least 7.

It is increasing real-world violence rates about as much as the portrayal of women in games is increasing real-world sexism/mysoginism against women.

Tee hee.

Never having read his work, I can't comment on it. All I can say is that we all know correlation does not equal causation. Also, he has fallen into the medias trap. There is not more violence in youths these days, at least as far as I am able to ascertain based on statistics. The only statistics I can find is that overall violent crimes have actually steadily declined since 2001 with a strange upsurge in 2006 for some reason. It's a trap... the news shows us mass murder and people think it's common, but it's not. It's simply, what you see is all there is mentality.

EXTRA EXTRA! STUPID MAN SAYS STUPID THINGS!

Maaaaaaaaaaaan. Killology. Jesus... That's the name a five year old gives to things

Look at his eyes, folks... That's the stare of a killologist. Somebody with the ability to kill brain cells just by touching you.

When I read comments like this and realise that these people are actually well respected and treated with deference by some people I get very scared.

Try thinking about the fact that people think FOX News is the only true news network in life. My dad one time had to work with a guy who refused to change the TVs off of FOX when they wanted to bring up the news, and when they tried to suggest CNN, the guy responded "oh, the Communist News Network?"

Radicalism is becoming the new norm in America, and I for one am not keen on it. Atheists, Christians, Conservatives, Liberals, scientific disciplines, parents, children... it seems like everyone has gone into a permanent rage mode.

man, I wish I had enough accolades to make up a field of science

Andy Chalk:
The name Dave Grossman may not be as instantly recognizable as, say, Jack Thompson or Michael Atkinson, but for those who follow this sort of thing the retired Lieutenant Colonel is a well-known figure...

I knew the name Dave Grossman sounded famiiler, but I coundn't quite place it.

Then I remembered, Dave Grossman is the spineless drugged-up wannabe biker lawyer character from Grand Theft Auto 4: The Lost and Damned (who appears the cutscene for the mission entitled It's War).

http://gta.wikia.com/Dave_Grossman

Dave Grossman:
"There is a generation of vicious, vicious killers out there," he said. "The videogames are their trainers. They've been playing Grand Theft Auto every spare moment since they were six years old."

The amusing thing is that these vicious killers that have been playing Grand Theft Auto since they were six will already think Dave Grossman is a massive tool, even if they've never heard of the other Dave Grossman.

Considering the subject matter and Grand Theft Auto being the go-to scapegoat game for videogame violence, this is quite an unfortunate yet amusing coincidence.

Don't care if you're joking or not. Not funny.

And not okay to say.

Genocide, or even proposed genocide is not to be taken lightly.

Actually, it was satire. I was poking holes in his views by taking them a step further to their logical conclusion, which is irrational. Any humor to be gained from that was from you and you alone. See Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" for something similar.

I am well aware of Swift's 'Modest Proposal', and the difference here is that he spent a great deal of time working on that, while you only spent a few minutes at most.

And even then, some people took the suggestion seriously.

Killogoy huh? Why is time and coverage being given to this obvious crackpot?

I actually did a term paper on violence and mass media this year and had some notes on him.

The killology isn't insane or crazy, it came from a book that he wrote about what techniques the US army has been using to train people to kill. It's now a required reading for Marine officers.

He's still wrong on video games, he obviously isn't in touch with anyone who plays video games and doesn't realize that shooting targets in a game is not the same as shooting targets in real life, while also being indoctrinated to kill.

Grossman:
"There is a generation of vicious, vicious killers out there," he said. "The videogames are their trainers. They've been playing Grand Theft Auto every spare moment since they were six years old."

And right there, you have given me all the reason to never listen to you again.
I could go over how economic disparity social pressure and a world that bombards us with bullshit daily might cause the rare mind to go *POP*, (plus good ol fashioned crazy) but you just claimed that an entire generation of gamers sits and plays Grand Theft Auto every moment they can spare.

Fuck, you weren't worth the time it took to mock your pretentious horse shit.

People dont really believe him do they now? In the age of pandering and trash literature, this somewhat sad fellow simply found a niche to fill with his unjustified conjectures, baseless accusations and unfounded claims. It's his way of making money off of the foolish and ignorant.Let him talk; this way we know who the idiots are!

*sigh* Unlike Thompson or Atkinson, this douche bag looks to only be in his mid-forties at most. It's going to be a while before he dies off and we won't have to listen to his drivel anymore.

Best thing we can do is ignore him. He sounds about as deranged as the gun-toters. Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll have a severely debilitating stroke when someone directly tells him, "That is simply not true."

deathbydeath:
"We must prepare for violence like firefighters prepare for fires..."

Wait, is he suggesting that when someone gets shot in a school, a bell rings and all the students shuffle out in an organized manner?

Yes, and then the police, armed with machine guns mow them down as they walk out the exits so we make sure that we get the killer. There are no innocents in the videogame age, every kid who has ever picked up a controller is a serial killer waiting to happen.

This guy is fucking nuts and should be ignored.

DVS BSTrD:

"There is a generation of vicious, vicious killers out there," he said. "The videogames are their trainers. They've been playing Grand Theft Auto every spare moment since they were six years old."

As opposed to people like you who make their CAREERS out of being vicious killers.

Bullshit. Guy was a Lt. Colonel. He did not do any damn work he sent the enlisted to go do the real killing. He just told other people to go do work and get killed.

OT:
Officers almost always think that they know everything about everything and that everyone should just do what they demand. Even if they are COMPLETELY disconnected from the topic... So it makes sense he is trying to order people around still.

RaNDM G:

On a side note, I'm starting a protest rock band called Killology. Anyone care to join?

I support a form of this idea, but Killology makes is a much better album name than it is a band name

Do you know the type of people I hate more than people who think videogames kill people? People who talk like violent videogames are the only types of videogames. It is almost as if all games are specifically rated M.

Now, I suggest that we ban life. Nowadays, it seems like the only logical solution.

This guy does realize crime rates have been declining in the US... right?

Paranoid nutcase makes unfounded claims. Nothing to see here.

They say stuff like this, even though study's say otherwise and the fact is, gun crime is the lowest it has ever been.

anonymity88:
When I read comments like this and realise that these people are actually well respected and treated with deference by some people I get very scared.

I think you might be confusing "deference" with "academic credentials". Just because he is a professor in psychology, doesn't mean any serious psychologist will respect him. As a matter of fact, Grossman is probably more useful to the field of psychology as a subject, rather than as a researcher.

devotedsniper:
Oh look another one blaming games, yet films and books get no such blame or better yet how about we focus on the real problems?

Indeed, why is it no-one blames news sources like Fox News and The Daily Mail, when they quite literally exist to increase hatred and misunderstanding amongst citizens?

It seems to me that his university education didn't have much of an impact on him if he still tries standing by statements that there is simply no evidence of, I suppose soft sciences can be like that.

Sutter Cane:

RaNDM G:

I have to say, neither of you are right. Killology is a stupid word in any situation, because it's too hard to pronounce a short word of 4 syllables in which 3 of those syllables have an 'l' sound - phonetically speaking it's a crime against language. And that's why it has even less chance as an album name, because it would have to go through rigorous market testing first. However, should you ditch one of the syllables and just make it "Killogy", well... then that's workable.

Please Andy, do not give these kinds of people the undeserved recognition. Making people know of his existence is just going to make it worse. Let's just ignore the fuck out of the extremists and agitators like himself.

Why do these people have access to the public far more than we do?

If video games cause people to commit massacres, it sure is a good thing that Genghis Khan did not have access to a 360.

Which is exactly how the previous prediction about violent media went right?

Oh wait it seems that with a healthy non-real outlet for their violence and considerably less free time violent crimes actually nosedived. I welcome these new soothsayers and mystics who wish to predict things about the future based on their ideas about a particular medium. They can join the Bible Doomsday predictors and Rock and Roll haters in the ranks of people nobody actually takes seriously.

erttheking:
Dear Mr. Grossman

I kill fake people. You kill real people. Yet I'm the murderer?

Go fuck yourself

That is all

Sincerely, someone with a working brain.

The hypocrisy is astounding.

But hey, it's designed for scare tactics, not thinking people.

Actually, isn't the homicide rate with youth these days DOWN compared to prior decades?

Beyond that, I'm pretty sure there was plenty of violence LONG before video games were around. If it's not video games, it's movies. If it's not movies, it's TV. If it's not TV, it's comic books. If it's not comic books, it's rock and roll music. If it's not rock and roll music, it's gothic horror novels. If it's not novels, it's religion. If it's not religion, it's a lack of religion. If it's not a lack of religion, it's communism. If' it's not communism, it's democracy. If it's not democracy, it's Santa Claus.

Blame everybody else... same song, different verse.

Trends in gun related violence have been going down in America since the 90's has it not. Wish people would use data and not bullshit.

While I generally respect soldiers, this guy's... well, describing him as "out there" is probably too nice.

Terminate421:
Why do these people have access to the public far more than we do?

Because sensationalism sells like hotcakes, that's why.

On a more serious note, I'd like to partake in some effort to counteract the nonsense that goes on in the media circus. If nothing else, it'd be better than doing nothing.

Nowhere Man:

No, the disintegration of the family structure and disregard of parental responsibilities are whats to blame for rising murder rates. If there ARE any rising rates. Hasn't murder and violent crime as a whole actually gone DOWN over the years?

See that? That text in bold? That's why there are morons gunning for regulating M-rated games, because the parents are too friggin' lazy to do it themselves, even though there is a detailed rating system, for a medium that is far better regulated than any other.

People astound me sometimes...

Nowhere Man:

Why do these idiots act like GTA and Call of Duty were the only video games ever made and being played?

Because they know nothing about video games. They look at the figures, GTA and CoD are easily the best selling franchises.

And yes, hyporcisy: Advocating the killing of real people who may or may not be terrorists, but at the same time forbidding the killing of fake people, presumably because he thinks them to be an endangered species. Actually, do we know what IQ range most of these people occupy? Because my guess is 80-90, given that the guy calls himself a "professor of killology".

And on top of that: gun control. It works everywhere else, and gun-related murders are still a few times higher in the US than anywhere else.

The Rogue Wolf:
snip

I mean, the term "killology" is enough to scoff at, but now I wonder if the US Army does intelligence testing as a part of its officer selection.

Well this man proves that it does and if it finds any they get rid of you as fast they can :D (USA this was a joke. You still understand humour, old pal? Buddy-o? You won't invade my country, please? We are in this NATO thingamajig so you shouldn't...)

Is it ironic that this man himself genuinely deserves to be shot and killed?

I think it might be...
