Wolfenstein: The New Order Trailer Goes Über on History

War never changes, except when the Nazis win and history twists and we need a top man like B.J. Blazkowicz to set things right.

There's a sweet irony in the opening line of this Wolfenstein: The New Order trailer. "So much has changed," say Mr. Blazkowicz, hero of id Software's 1992 FPS Wolfenstein 3D, in which he gunned down Nazis by the truckload and saved the world from tyranny. He did it again that same year in Spear of Destiny, then Return(ed) to Castle Wolfenstein in 2001 and came back for more in 2009's Wolfenstein. And soon he'll be back again, this time in an alternate history in which the Nazis developed the bomb, nuked New York, conquered the world, recorded Abbey Road, went to the moon and presumably hit a whole mess of other pop-culture touchstones on their way to enslaving the planet.

But have no fear because B.J. is here, and he's brought a whole bunch of guns and a heavy back-beat with him. The gameplay doesn't start until the 1:35 mark and even then it's cut so fast that it's hard to tell what's going on, but we already know what's going on, don't we? Bullets fly, Nazis die! Boom! Take that, ya dirty ratzis!

Wolfenstein: The New Order is being developed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and next-gen consoles, and is expected to be out for the holidays.

Is it only me who can't take this trailer seriously ?
The stock google pictures edited with Microsoft Paint or something, makes it look b-movie and not serious.
If they didn't wanted to spend money on proper live and cgi clip production,it would be better to only use gameplay videos if you ask me. As it is,seeing a trailer of a major publisher consisting of 4chan quality edited images,it makes it feel like a parody to me instead of feeling like serious stuff.

I'm calling it now.

Time Machine!

But really the plot's just filler, explosions, robots, demons and mecha Hitler are what I'm waiting to see.

Blocked in Germany :(
I can just see the tumbnail and yeah, stuff like that can be blocked here pretty easily. I wouldn't be surprised if the game gets put on the index of forbidden stuff.
(note: most Pre-2003 games are often on it because there was no USK 18 at that time, newer titles were classified as "severely endangering adolescents/youngers" because of iconography or massive excessed of brutality)

Yeah. That's the point, I think.

Edit: Color me actually excited for an FPS! Oh, (pseudo)WW2, I've missed you so much.

You know I never realized it before watching MILK, but the way hitler is gesturing in the stock footage makes me think devotion to the Riech wasn't the only reason he never married.

Nazi game blocked in Germany? Color me white :P

I was hoping for more supernatural elements, but you never know :P . The best game in the series IMO, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and also one of the greatest games ever made had it right. You do not just go with nazi Sci-fi, add supernatural sh*t, monsters and zombies :D

Actually he did marry - for the last 40 hours of his life... (Hitler's last hours were an... interesting period. For want of a better word.)

Anyway, B-movie time travel future-punk game where I get to shoot space-Nazis? You have my attention, Wolfenstein (despite having never played any of your games before...)

I actually started laughing when i saw the Statue of Liberty image.
That one was the laziest of them all.
But yeah, i believe this isn't meant to be THAT serious...i think.

Oh well. I guess it's fine if that's what they were going for.
But I expected it to be more on the "serious" side.

For me it was when I saw the album cover of The Beatles, with The Beatles replaced with Nazis...
I mean OK,if just adding swastikas to known monuments of the world wasn't lazy enough,at least let them be animated,or something unique. But taking over-popular still pictures and just adding nazis to them ?
I've seen fake trailers from fans on Youtube be more imaginative and looking more professional.

OK, I felt sure the Abbey Road line was a comedic exaggeration in reference to how silly the whole Wolfenstein concept is... then I actually saw it in the trailer video. Damn, gonna be keeping my eye on this one! Looks fun!

Oh yeah, that one was brilliant aswell.

for me it isnt blocked and i'm from germany too.
I think they will get it a USk 18 but we will get a version without any Swastikas.

Releasing a trailer for a "What if the Nazis won?" scenario on D-Day...

I don't know if they did it on purpose, or whether it was an accident, but that it happened made me chuckle.

I'm going to assume that somewhere, people are annoyed about it though.

People who think the production looks lazy is missing the point. The entire premise wasn't meant to be taken seriously so the photoshoped stock photo feel actually helps to set the tone.

I mean come on. Time travelling Nazis with mechs?

As much as it might be good, I am tired of Nazis as an enemy. Same applies to zombies as well.

Glaice:

These aren't exactly bog standard Nazis though, are they?

Time traveling Nazis with giant mechs and ripping off the Beatles with me being able to dual wield BFGs while gunning down Nazis...yeah I think this is going for a bit of a goofy element. They can still wrangle a good solid storyline out of it though, Fallout was proof that you could have a lot of goofy elements and still be taken seriously, but we'll see what they're going for.

It's not on the "MUST BUY" list yet, but it does look interesting.

Also if anyone wants some more gameplay footage, there's some in this video.

Yeah, they switched the video from a youtube vid to the Escapist's own service. It was blocked on youtube.

Interesting. I loved Return to Castle Wolfenstein back in the day (and still do), and even though Wolfenstein pretty forgettable, this looks... I don't know. I like the alternate history angle, but the actual gameplay was cut too fast. Not super-impressed, but intrigued. Will be keeping an eye on this.

As many already said, it could br envolve somehow time traveling, but I will differ and I will say Alternative Reality Scenario.

We already saw in the previous games that different kind of dimensions exist, so why not a dimension like our?

Ok this has Nazi Robot Dogs, that makes it better CoD: Ghosts already!

The new Wolfenstein is going to be a bit of a bummer for me no matter what. I played Wolf3D as a kid and it was fun and all but not that special and pure nostalgia only goes so far. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was my favorite game ever (and would still be if more people played) but only because of the multiplayer. I think at best I finished half of the single player campaign. My excitement over a new Wolfenstein (to hopefully counteract the awful one released in 2009) was quickly tempered by a lack of multiplayer.

This new trailer doesn't make it look any more appealing.

Unless the Nazi were given a nuke via time travel, there is no way they could of "gotten the bomb" first.

The Nazi military science divisions were competing with each other (even going out of their way to ruin the efforts of each other), fighting over a limited amount of funds. Some of them knew their machines could never work (such as a near orbital bomber that would of had the flying characteristics of a brick in the real world) yet continued to suck up money and resources anyway because they wanted the money/they feared the punishment of failure/they were Allied spies/some combination.

Also, they were not allowed to use any "Jew Science," including Albert Einstein. You kind of need General Relativity to make The Bomb.

So, yeah, time travel is involved.

Ftaghn To You Too:
Edit: Color me actually excited for an FPS! Oh, (pseudo)WW2, I've missed you so much.

Seriously. This is the first FPS I've been actually excited about for quite some time. It's a bizarre, alien sensation that I'd almost forgotten.

Even though this is an action america ftw game, I hope they show the darkness of war, in a place where almost no WW2 game designer has gone, into the nazi concetration camps. If executed correctly a scene with that could envoke some real emotion (as well as press attention, but hopefully the game industry will ignore that)

pfff no! It was Nazi unicorn magic. Everyone knows that.

On a (semi)serious note, didn't BJ blow Hitler away in Wolfenstein 3D? Which would mean new management that has a little more foresight then the old one, maybe?

Yes, but footage of Hitler was clearly shown. Maybe it is a clone or something, but I don't think continuity is Wolfenstein's strong point.

Meatspinner:
didn't BJ blow Hitler

cant been unseen once you've seen it.

muhahahahahaha!

yes, they did. but they might have invented cloning and stem cell research. or , being an alternate universe, he didnt blow up.

Damn I can't believe I missed that!

I like the idea(it all has a very C&C: Red Alert feel to it) but the Abbey Road bit made it about 20% less threatening.

Also, did anyone else immediately think of the intro sequence to Watchmen? All they would need to do is dub Bob Dylan over.

Glaice:

Blasphemy. Killing Nazis will never get old.

I love re-imaginings of history, the "what ifs", so this gets me excited. Plus it actually looks like a solid FPS. Not too sure about the mechs though, but atleast they add variety to the enemy.

For most of this trailer, I agree with most of the people here that it was pretty silly, but am I the only one who actually started laughing out loud at the astronaut giving the nazi salute?
