Update: PlayStation 4's Appearance Finally Unveiled

Sony's next-gen console is ready to show you its stuff. Its high-tech, rhombus-shaped stuff.

Sony earned a lot of ire when it revealed the PlayStation 4 without ever showing the physical console. Well, the time has come - the next-gen system has a finalized look, and there's no better time to show it off than E3. If you're busy snarking about how it's a lot of fuss over a black box, you may want to hold your tongue. The PS4 has a radical design that's way more interesting than just some black box.

It's a black rhombus.

More to come as the Sony E3 press conference continues!

Update: Sony has concluded their press conference by dropping the PS4's price point. The PlayStation 4 will sell for $399, undercutting the Xbox One by a clean hundred bucks. In other territories the price has been named as 399 Euros in Europe and 349 Pounds in the UK.

At least the top isn't rounded I suppose for those who need to set things on top of it.

I guess this is the generation where all the consoles look like shit though.

Well. At least it doesn't look like an old VCR.

Why are people so invested in how the consoles look?

It's relatively small and it has a flat top. That's enough for me to consider buying it when it's under $200 and there's a decent Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts on it.

I guess Microsoft and Sony are both going for the big black box approach. Not sure how I feel about it, to be honest. And why do both consoles have to have a shiny side and a rough side? While I kind of like the sleek look (it just looks sleeker than the Xbox 1, to me) it also just seems very generic. Take a box and tilt it XD

It depends on people's style. Outside of being a console, it is, essentially, a piece of furniture since it usually does sit out in the open. Also, people like stuff that look cool especially at the price that consoles tend to go for.

When it's up sideways it actually looks pretty cool with that light down the center.

The Xbox One certainly was far from impressive, being rather bulky and bland, but this is simply the silliest looking console I have ever seen. I honestly laughed when I saw it.

This is going to be one ugly console generation, isn't it?

It looks like a VCR sandwich :P

Not sure how old you are, but I distinctly remember having some VCR's that looked a lot like that growing up.

Man, that thing looks really really awkward... And it is just a black box...

Do we know the price though?

Um...

Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV both helmed by Tetsuya Nomura were just announced...

AND THEY LOOK FUCKING AWESOME. Well worth over 200 bucks.

Best comment i've seen so far was "Its the xbox one but in italics" :)

Ah kids today. You haven't lived until you've seen the shit they released in the 70's. Hell, even stuff like the Famicom and Sega Master System were ugly as fuck.

This is going to be one ugly console generation, isn't it?

Absolutely agree with you here though.

I'd like to say that I called it when I said it'd look like the newest Sony Bluray players:

I;'m not personally concerned with how it looks, though it's nice to indeed see what it looks like so it's not just a big blank in my head anymore.

Now Sony, for the important bits please.

Ah... Okay...

It would have seemed to make slightly more sense for the top to be pitched forward if you were going to insist on doing things that way- easier access to the optical disk, less real-estate usage at the back of entertainment centers where space is at a premium and the user has to access wires- but I guess that will work.

It's not hideous. It looks fairly sleek. It will fade from perception when it's not in use. I guess that's about what we expect from most of our electronics, these days.

Not the most stylish console I've ever seen, but then neither is the Xbox None.

I have seen the future, and it is in the shape of the parallelogram that nobody remembers after grade school.

How it looks probably isn't going to matter to me if I buy it or not.

That being said....The Hell is that?

Oh, trust me, I know. My father's trove of old electronics has given me plenty of exposure, but I kind of have a thing for old electronics. Yeah, some older stuff is arguably uglier, but that gets a pass because of age. Even the wood paneling can get this pass (which I find tacky as all hell). I guess I would rather have this than an Atari 5200, but this is 2013! We should have outgrown butt ugly electronics! At least my PC is kinda sexy, if not a freaking monolith of computing power that goes up to my knees.

I'm really staring to be really happy I invested building in a top of the line Gaming PC.

I think it looks kind of cool.

It's a parallelepiped, when it's in 3D like that it's a parallelepiped... station 4

For one thing, the PS4's design is beautiful. If your not into those shapes then fine, so be it. The fact is, it is a shell containing even uglier hardware. To be anything but simple would cost us the customer a lot more $$$. Then the argument would be reversed.
so...
Why are there so many people stuck on the cosmetic design of the consoles? The NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, Game Cube, XBOX, TurboGrafx-16, and Atari 2600 all were (F)ugly. The only system that enhanced the PIMP factor of your pad was the Sega Genesis, XBOX 360, PS3 (slim) and NEO GEO.

It isn't even the important part of the "video game" console.

Nowhere Man:

Nah it looks like a Betamax

The headphone jack on the controller... I gotta say, stroke of genius.

I dunno about you guys, but I actually think it looks rather nice. It looks better than the PS3 and 360 looked, that's for sure. Plus, it's not rounded on top, which is a plus because then I can stack my PS2 on top or something to save surface space on my desk's shelf.

Well it does look better than the Xbone at least, and it's fairly slick. Not sure about rhombus look, but it shouldn't cause any problems. Won't make me buy one but Sony is at least capitalizing on the massive bed-crapping MS went through recently.

Got mine all lit up with green neon and a clear side so I can keep track on the dust buildup, plus it's got dual GTX 580s and 6 gigs of ram so that should last me a few years.

What's yours like?

P.S. yeah wood paneling on anything other than a really old radio is ugly as hell.

OK... So... Uh, bland it is then. Well, consoles stopped looking interesting anyway right around the time everyone started using CD's...

Compare the complicated, rounded shapes of the N64 to the original playstation and you'll quickly see what I mean...
Then look at just about every disk based console made after that point (including Nintendo's, if you're considering the stylistic sensibilities of a single company...)

Ugh.

Disks ruined console design forever. XD

image

Once upon a time, a company called atari decided to make another console...

well its the END FOR XBOX ONE now that sony will allow used games to play, sell, trade, share, not connected to internet to play games,etc......... XBOX will be forced to change or its the end!!!! This will be the first ps console i will buy unless xbox decides to give in, which i think they have no choice!!!

It's black, for the most part, with some silver trim, but the front panel glows a really pretty blue and the venting looks pretty cool. That clear side is an awesome idea, though. I'll have to keep that in mind when I build another one once the hardware in this one gets too out of date. Not that any will be too outdated anytime soon!

... Oh no. This generation is going to turn me into a GLORIOUS PC MASTER RACE person, isn't it? Sony, Microsoft, pick up the slack here! I've always been a console gamer, and you're changing me!

I'm actually hoping someone releases a retro wood paneling skin for these consoles now, just to complete the retro feel.

You know, I sort of like this. It reminds me of the architecture of the pre-human civilization from the Assassin's Creed series. Since I don't give a fuck what the Wii U looks like, I say PS4 wins the beauty contest for this generation.

I quite like it's look, especially when it's vertical with the blue stripe quite a nice look there and will fit well next to my other Playstations. Sofar so good Sony, keep it up!

Guys, that's not what a rhombus is. The bisecting diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular, and its sides are all congruent- the PS4 is just an ordinary parallelogram- or rather, since it's three-dimensional, a parallelepiped. Much more stylish than a blocky old rhombus.
