Microsoft Exec: Offline Gamers Should Stick With Xbox 360

 Pages PREV 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 NEXT

Gawd, this guy. The only reason--THE ONLY REASON--I don't simply comment with something really vitriolic and spiteful is because I'm afraid of the almighty banhammer.

Seriously, though, I don't think the point could be missed any harder by anyone anywhere. I mean. Even Kaz Hirai's whole "We wanted the PS3 to be impossible to program for" argument makes more sense than this. And really? I wasn't on the Microsoft hate train before the Xbox One was announced. I wasn't. I have a 360 and I feel mostly positive towards it. I use PCs 'cause Mac's branding and . . . whole . . . GUI . . . style . . . thing just doesn't appeal to me.

But this? Really? Really? His response to legitimate concerns of people who are actually interested in patronizing his business is "Just play this outdated piece of equipment we produced instead"?

The least he could have done was be honest with himself and say "Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity. It's called PLAYSTATION FOUR."

Very well, Microsoft. As I do not play games online, I will not purchase your console. Advertising fail.

...

...

WHAT?

There is digging your own grave, there is hitting rock bottom.

Then there is THIS.

Are you trying to sell PS4s for Sony? Is this some kind of Spring Time For Hitler scheme?

Wow... just when you think M$ can't screw up more... this guy comes along... yep, there goes all your offline players, AND LAN-party goers... did I smell something burning? oh! it's just Don Mattrick about to get fired!~

I donno... right now, I just want to sing that "playstation" song again...

"Tekken7, Metal Gears Solid(5), Resident Evil(REV).. P,L,A,Y,S,T,A,T,I,O,N, ...~~~"

This is insane.

They've had time to assess the initial reaction to the Xbox One. They must have people studying this kind of thing. By now they should have their PR/marketing/damage control departments rehearsing every possible public statement they make. There's no way these guys should be going in front of a camera and coming out with stuff like this.

The Xbone has to be some kind of "Producers" type scam, where they want it to fail. That's the only possible explanation for this.

Honestly Microsoft, that's the best idea you've had since this whole Xbox1 debacle started. I will in fact just keep my 360 after I've bought a PS4.

neppakyo:
So, how many countries did MS tell to fuck off and buy a 360?

Still like to see what german authorities will do to the xbone.

Nevermind other countries - from what I hear from other escapists there are large areas of the US that still use dial up and even in big cities good internet seems to be massively expensive for them. It seems to me that MS is screwing over their biggest market the most.

And i agree that it will be most hilarious to see what Germany does with it (and the rest of the EU for that matter). Afterall they dif ban the sale of the 360 after some court case although i dont think that decision has actually been implemented yet.

PhantomEcho:
Good luck finding someone willing to commit career suicide to replace your President of Interactive Entertainment Business when you find enough common sense to fire this idiot.

That is the problem isn't it?

Anyone with enough brain cells to fire this guy is also going to have enough brain cells to figure out that they won't find anyone qualified enough willing to jump off the career cliff.

So, their choices are to keep this guy, or promote Josť the janitor.

I'm just kind of flabbergasted at how much it goes against Xbox One's "all-in-one" basis for even existing according to Microsoft that the thing can't play Xbox 360 games. "It does everything you need in your entertainment space! One machine! One place! One input! ("Input one"?) ...oh, except for your Xbox 360. It doesn't do that. Keep that around.

I mean, geez, even if they ducked tape an Xbox 360 to the inside of the Xbox One and pretended the Xbox One was doing it. Charge $700 for a "Super Pro Xbox One Limited Edition" with Xbox 360 compatibility. Something to make you not look like blithering idiots when you recommend your customers do the opposite of what you're supposedly advertising.

True, same issue in Canada too. Large parts are dial up, or spotty cell phone internet, and satellite internet. I'm lucky enough to have a fast stable connection. I pity the poor folks in australia with absolute horrible shitty spotty internet, obviously not a Xbone friendly country.

I really hope the EU does something drastic to MS, faint hope though.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....
HAAAAAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA...

o.o

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Oh my god. What the hell. Why the fck is that man not kept safe in a cellar, chained and gagged away from all forms of comunication?!
Microsoft, what the i don't even.

"hey we just realized our newest flagaship is already sinking while still in drydock, out of the water so we thoguht we might discourage your from buying the other next gen console that is not blatantly chaining and gagging its buyers. Because why would you want a next gen console with no internet, its not like there will be any games that have MP only as an added feature not as an requirement. So yes totally do not buy that one console that isn't ours that gives you everything you want and OFFERS everything else you might want optionally...."

wow. just wow.
Somebody should just mercykill the xbone already, that thing got stabbed in the back more than fckn rasputin.

Microsoft has just made it official that they do not care in the slightest about their customerbase and only want to serve to privileged kids who have enough money to buy a new Xbox One every time they go out to buy a new game.

"If you're backwards compatible, you're really backwards."

Quite. So if I can play games released in the 90's on Windows 7 then that is really backwards. Really backwards compatible.

OT: It sounds a bit daft, really. I mean after all, in the next few years they will discontinue the 360 anyway, so what he is saying is complete bullshit...UNLESS it turns out the 360 gets more sales than the xbone. Which I doubt will happen -_-

At this point I'm pretty sure the tobacco giants have more respect for their customer base than Microsoft's gaming division does for theirs.

lacktheknack:
Dammit, guys, I'm trying to lose weight! This is too rich for me!

Don't worry, laughing burns a shitload of calories!

a ceo said something stupid? OMG SOMEBODY CALL THE LOCAL NEWS STATIONS NAOOOOO!

you'd think people would be used to stupid ceo comments by now...

Microsoft, at this point you need to be able to sell the Xbox One to as many people as possible, so telling a not insignificant number of them "don't buy our new console" is probably not the smartest move.

Then again just being honest and telling them to stick to the 360 is probably better then telling them to buy your new DRMbox even though it would basically be a $500 Tivo.

What's amazing about this (to me) is that the once-a-day / once-an-hour connectivity is NOT due to a necessity, but specifically as an anti-feature that works to disable the product. If it could be circumvented somehow, the XBone would continue to work fine. And yet all the MS goons seem to believe it is a functional necessity.

In fact, I wonder how long it will be before someone makes a ping-box that simulates phoning home. It sounds like a required accessory for the XBone much like the diorama you stick in front of the camera to fool it into thinking there's only one or two users (to circumvent group charges).

Now that I think of it, the invasiveness of the XBone reminds me a lot of the Riddler's television-enhancing machine (simply called The Box) from Batman Forever.

Like it or not those so-called dude bros are bringing in piles of money to support your hobby, so perhaps acting like a jackass to them isn't the best course of action.

These dude bros are not supporting our hobby they are ruining it by swallowing every coolaid that the industry puts infront of them.

All the negative sides of the xbone can be attributed to mindless and uninformed consumerism.. you know.. just what those so called "dudebros" do.

Also we should be thankfull for to them for only buying CoD BF and EA sports games?

Sorry to burst your bubble but dudebros are the problem here not the solution.

Sorry to burst your bubble but these guys are supporting your hobby, plenty of development studios make their bankroll off those who are only interested in buying the next COD/BF or Sports games. Wana take a few guesses as to where Destiny, Mirrors Edge, Battlefront 3 and Countless other games incentive publisher money comes from??? Mobile games, and sports games.

Complain all you want about how some guy enjoying his favorite title, that you don't find appealing is running the industry, but its just uninformed bigotry.

These dudebros as you call them are running the industry? sorry but as someone who's worked with developers and has worked with these dudebros I actually see them dump money into an industry that might not survive without them, I've yet to actually come across a dudebro that dost play COD; as well as fanatically support nintendo products, or delve deeper into some of the other aspects associated with the supposed "hard core" gamer.

Also take a little moment to put your critical reading hat on and look a little closer at my OP notice it says nothing of microsoft, or X1.

Soo... Would you kindly take your bigotry and stereotypical disgusting attitude and GTFO.

lol okay, gaming would have totally died out by now were it not for the dudebros shovelling money into whatever games have a soldier on the front cover surrounded by dust and military hardware...what, where am I? Oh I just passed out from laughing.

The video game industry isn't going anywhere, it will always re-incarnate in one form or another; the only thing these dudebro chaps are doing by continuing to make CoD a best-seller is perpetuating the regurgitation of stale ideas in the industry and encouraging publishers to eschew fresh and interesting concepts in favour of either sticking with what has been proven to make money or copying whatever does.

So, would you kindly drop your pretentious attitude and stop being so hostile to other users.

Jackasses run M$ it seems, no way they'll turn a profit till they get their act together, PS4 have simillar ideas but they speak in a less obstructive and reasonable way (5 euros for multiplayer a month, first party games won't be blocked or have drm but they've made the infrastructure for other publishers still).

This is a PR nightmare and they're only sticking to their swords (because they don't seem to have guns) in order to seem confident in their choices for the future... If we're lucky the Exec and Xbone won't have a future ;)

Ah, so THIS is who is filling the Toomey role. It MUST be deliberate.

neppakyo:

I really hope the EU does something drastic to MS, faint hope though.

I wouldn't say it is that faint of a hope. The EU and Microsoft have had a bit of a tumultuous relationship of late. First the EU forced Microsoft to include a thing that popped up on their OS, which gave links and info about other web browsers, so people could make their own choice on what to use. Then when Microsoft broke that agreement the EU fined them $731 million. And then Germany ruled in favour of Motorola in a court case, which meant all Xbox 360 and Windows 7 products were banned from sale in that country. (although that decision was apparently delayed by an American judge). I don't know if the EU as a whole would enact sanctions, but I wouldn't count Germany out from doing something about it.

Come on MS PR, " If you can't say anything smart or at least non-caustic, don't say anything at all".

Please, take this to heart.

who let Zune team make next Xbox?

I have a great Internet connection, in fact I am pretty confident that I could support an always on console, but that's not the point. I don't want to buy a console in which I need to check in because I don't like the thought of being managed like that.

EDIT: ooops

sturryz:
This is starting to turn to Parody really quickly. Microsoft needs to stop digging the hole their under or else the fallout of this thing is gonna be even worse then when this thing comes out and crashes and burns. They have become some twisted joke of how we envision Corporate America.

On the bright side, when Americans ask why us foreigners don't like their country or what they stand for we can point to Microsoft and say "Pretty much that". Thankyou M$ for being the symbol of corporate America :-)

perhaps I didn't say it in the best words, but the sentiment is that many of the games that we really want are clearly being funded through, Sports, COD/ Battlefield, and mobile games. I in no way meant to imply that gaming was otherwise dead, only that many of the games we would like more of would be dead. Pretty sure I'd be seeking employment in other fields if I was foolish enough to think gaming is dying.

"the only thing these dudebro chaps are doing by continuing to make CoD a best-seller is perpetuating the regurgitation of stale ideas"
O boo hoo lots of people enjoy a game I don't like and it sells well, theres always going to be a popular game the masses like that others think is garbage.

"So, would you kindly drop your pretentious attitude and stop being so hostile to other users."

No absolutely not, at least in this case. This attitude to other gamers is offensive and disgusting. They enjoy their games I enjoy mine there is absolutely no reason for this other then I don't like it and it involves my hobby. Dudebros ruining my gaming is the same attitude as female gamers ruin my hobby, people enjoying their facebook games ruin my triple A games, and ultimately devolves into, group X is there for lesser to me arbitrarily therefore I shall assert my superiority.

It feels like Xbox is in panic mode before my eyes. Look how weary and frustrated he sounds. How he lets that slip with that borderline snippy, unprofessional tone and listen for the shocked "Stick with 360?" reaction of the interview. There's a half second hesitation where you can just feel what an awful mistake they've made. Wow.

Oi, we actually do have good high speed connection (here in Australia), atleast some of us..... The NBN will help abit too, but regardless the XBone isn't even for those with perfect connection since once its servers are off so is your system :-/

Adam Jensen:
Hold on a second there Microsoft. Are you saying that Xbox 360 is the only offline device I can use instead of Xbone? I can think of a few more. PC, PS3, Wii U and...

...wait for it...

PlayStation 4!

Not to mention all those nice and powerful tablets and smart phones that have been coming out, granted not the perfect choice for 'core' gamers but considering the market they seem to be aiming for they'd probably be competing alot more than say the PS4 and PC will.....

between windows 8 and xbox one i wonder if there is something majorly wrong with m$ right now. i will still play on the 360 um maybe someday

Zachary Amaranth:

Beautiful End:
That's smart; attempt to get into the 7th gen gaming race...but encourage people to STILL get your old console.

INSTEAD of your new one.

When failing to make a case for why people need the upgrade.

Why not? M$ are probably past the point where they profit on the hardware now, the Xbone will cost them money for every sale. M$ will still get Xbox Live fees and licencing fees for every game sold, the 360 will remain profitable for a while yet so why not encourage people to buy one?

I swear to god, this guy must be being hired by Sony and been planted in Microsoft. There's no way someone can be as stupid as he's been recently without some sort of ulterior motive behind it.

Way to tell the roughly 30 million people with a 360 that's not connected to go fuck themselves.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/390583/76-million-xbox-360s-sold-worldwide/

Prick.

Gabe Yaden:

O boo hoo lots of people enjoy a game I don't like and it sells well, theres always going to be a popular game the masses like that others think is garbage.

I never said I didn't like games like CoD. Actually, I don't like games like CoD, but I do like CoD; the games in question aren't the point, here, but the people who will mindlessly buy them just because they have a franchise name stamped on them.

And this trickle down economics you seem to imply exists --suggesting that the sale of these games funds more interesting ones-- would maybe hold some weight if we weren't constantly seeing original series like Dead Space and Lost Planet being gutted of all their personality so they can be more like 'what's selling' and then shot in the back of the head when they fail to meet impossible sales targets.

Best case scenario: these series end up being butchered into the same homogenous slop as everything else because it's easier to sell and less of a financial risk.

And you want me to be happy about this? Thankful, even?

"So, would you kindly drop your pretentious attitude and stop being so hostile to other users."

Dudebros ruining my gaming is the same attitude as female gamers ruin my hobby, people enjoying their facebook games ruin my triple A games, and ultimately devolves into, group X is there for lesser to me arbitrarily therefore I shall assert my superiority.

No, the attitude to girl gamers is stupid because having a vagina doesn't automatically dictate what kinds of games you like to play; a woman will never threaten my hobby by wanting to be a part of it. If girl gamers were demanding that all games be pink and about unicorns and rainbows then you might have had a point, except it wouldn't make a difference because developers refuse to accept that girls make up a huge portion of the gaming population because, well whaddya know, they are busy exclusively catering to the CoD-gargling masses.

No, unlike girl gamers, dudebros are ruining the industry by only throwing their money at the same shit over and over again and stifling creativity. It's the reason we have umpteen Halo and CoD games, despite them all playing exactly the same as the last, and hardly any new IP in the mainstream to speak of (none that hasn't been killed off, or is soon to be, anyway).

It's the exact same way that idiots have ruined the landscape of television by making it clear they'd rather watch nothing but reality TV following the lives of talentless fuckwits rather than quality programming that actually challenges the viewer and makes them think.

We live in a culture now where money is the single defining factor in any business decision --not customer satisfaction, not creative integrity, not quality products-- and the Xbone is pretty much the perfect embodiment of that capitalistic apex.
