Sony Threatens Legal Action Against PlayStation 3 Hackers

Sony Computer Entertainment America has issued a statement saying it will "aggressively pursue legal action" against anyone attempting to crack the PlayStation 3's anti-piracy software.

Hackers have already cracked the PlayStation 3 firmware versions 1.10 and 1.11, allowing the system to boot illegal copies of games; at this point, however, they have not been able to make copied games or homebrew software run on the cracked systems. The PSP has a strong homebrew community, and hackers are no doubt hoping to establish a comparable base on the PlayStation 3.

"Unfortunately, hackers will try to exploit any hardware system software," said SCEA spokesman Dave Karraker. "The best we can do as a company is to make our security that much stronger and aggressively pursue legal action against anyone caught trying to use an exploit in an illegal manner."

Microsoft, when faced with a similar situation, responded by banning modified Xbox 360 consoles from its Xbox Live service; Sony could respond in a similar fashion with its PlayStation Network. Hackers also face the possibility of damaging their systems during their tinkering. "Naturally, any use of an exploit on the system software does void the warranty on the PS3 system, which could be a costly mistake to see if you can run an old Sega CD game on it," said Karraker.

I don't care, this will be great if it works, and Sony can shove their 60 dollar 2 hour games where the sun doesn't shine.

This will turn into a piracy flamewar but I don't care, that's my opinion.

Finally a good reason to buy a PS3. (moding)

Two hour games? Really? Which ones would those? The imaginary ones you made up?

Jesus dude, grow up.

OT: Good, smash the pirates into nothingness, hell, rather than ban them, just remotely destroy their PS3's. Now THAT would be awesome.

Good for them pirating ruined the PC market it shouldn't have to ruin the PS3

Well this is what should be done to combat piracy and hacking..jail the little fuckers.

Hope they ban hackers and freeze their consoles never to be used again..

They should also be fined, cause all in all, piracy is stealing..

Well they always can go the xbox 360 route. The block access to Xbox Live route that is. I am against the Cripple the HDD route. That is a jerk move!

So no HDD crippling, but yeah block the console from having access to PSN and hence.. online games.

Cracking consoles doesn't has to be all bad. With the PSP you gotten support for allot of older games out of the NES/SNE and so on era. Awesome! With the Xbox you did get a much better media experience then what came out of the box. Indeed it became a delightful Media box.

With the xbox 360 though, yeah that was pure to play downloaded games. There was no or almost none work into "emulators" or "improved media support" ha.. it was just all to play burned games.

Would you be ok with EA freezing a PC and making it permanently unusable?

Whoops did I? Oh sorry all ... I guess I was just not fully there when roaming the forum. Ya know sometimes you are just reading things and forget to check things like writing dates. Sorry again these things happen.
