Edge Names Ocarina of Time Best Game
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time tops Edge's "100 Best Videogames" chart.
British game magazine Edge has compiled a list of "Edge's 100 Best Videogames." Votes were compiled by thousands of readers, industry experts and the Edge editorial staff. After much deliberation, the winner is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Tony Mott, Editor-in-Chief of Edge, commented, "Ocarina of Time is nearly ten years old, but its position at the top slot in Edge's 100 Best Videogames shows that great game design does not age. In visual terms, it obviously cannot compete with today's Xbox 360 and PS3 productions, but, as with many classics, its appeal is about so much more than its appearance."
James Binns, Publishing Director of Edge, added, "The Edge team has created a gorgeous piece of work that is the definitive document of videogame excellence - although I am gutted that classic shooter Tempest 2000 didn't make the top 10."
The top 10 list reads:
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)
- Resident Evil 4 (GameCube, PlayStation 2)
- Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
- Half-Life 2 (PC)
- Super Mario World (Super Nintendo)
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo)
- Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
- Final Fantasy XII (PlayStation 2)
- Tetris (Various)
- Super Metroid (Super Nintendo)
The entire list will be released July 3 in a 260-page book entitled "Edge Presents: The 100 Best Videogames" for £10 ($20).
The best "Top Games" list I've seen (and also the most comprehensive) was EGM's Top 200 Greatest Games of Their Time. Personally, it fairly and accurately chooses a wide variety of games and where they rank on a scale against other high quality titles. Having the list made by industry experts, rather than a reader vote also helped.
EGM's list reads:
- Super Mario Bros. 3
- Street Fighter 2
- The Legend of Zelda
- Super Mario 64
- Space Invaders
- Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- Grand Theft Auto 3
