Microsoft Says User-Created Master Chief Is Okay With Them

image

A Microsoft lawyer has said that despite concerns to the contrary, Microsoft is not going to take issue with the creation of a Master Chief mod for Unreal Tournament 3.

Unveiled earlier in the week, the mod allows gamers to play as the Xbox flagship character Master Chief on the PlayStation 3 console by way of Unreal Tournament 3. Some observers felt the potential for a negative reaction from Microsoft was real enough that sources as far-flung as Business Week took notice, but on his DonkeyXote blog, Microsoft attorney Don McGowan wrote, "Many people are talking about the Master Chief mod for Unreal Tournament 3, that allows you to play in the character of the Master Chief on the PS3. Many people are surprised Microsoft is 'allowing' this."

"Actually it's nothing more than Game Content Usage Rules in action," he continued. "When these were developed, people all thought they were focused on machinima. The truth is that while they do address machinima they also allow for a lot of other things. Mods like this are one of them. The developers aren't selling the mod, they're not monetizing Microsoft's IP, they're just creating something to share their love of the Master Chief on a new platform. It's a great thing for us and a great thing for the gaming community."

Despite his magnanimous attitude, McGowan couldn't resist a parting shot at Sony's competing console. "This will also remind people of just how great the Halo games are and remind them that if they're done with the user-created faux-Halo experience, the real Halo is available only on the Xbox 360. And no one is taking characters from PlayStation games (do they even have any games?) and putting them on our platform..."

wow harsh words from the attourney

Yet funny.

Zing!

Does the 360 have any games worthy of modding PS3 characters into? (PS: joke)

can you mod m360 games? (minor grumble. why the hell not i scream!)

Hey, I suppose, then, that Cryptic Studios can tweak their character tools to let people make their own MC, no? After all, it spreads the faith.

Yes, you can. People have done it with GHII.

I would love to see The Arbiter jamming out on Guitar Hero... This sounds like it opens the door for a lot of other games to get mods to add Master Chief or other icons... Imagine modding SSBB to have MasterChief replace Fox or one of the other clone characters...

Oh, ZING. This is what corporate poltics should look like more often - agreement, acceptance, no lawsuits, pointing and laughing.

Give McGowan a medal for that outrageously forward comment!

Not quite what you asked for, but...

"And no one is taking characters from PlayStation games (do they even have any games?) and putting them on our platform..."

Maybe because they CAN'T. And this d*ck was doing so well.

Zing!

And I too would love the idea of the Arbiter rocking out on Guitar Hero.

Ouch, but ah well, "all's fair in love and war". And this is war, according to their, well, 'loyal' fanbase.

Seconded. The guy just stated that the PS3 was better for having User Created ports.

.......doesn't the XBOX 360 Live Arcade have Castlevania :Symphony of the Night, which was released on the ORIGINAL Playstation?

*goes to check the only thing that I've bought Microsoft Points for*

Well look at that.......it does. 8O

He was doing so well till he decided to be a twat-mouth

You couldn't mod anything into the 360 anyway. Well you can, But it would be just a complete waste of time.

Because you wouldn't be able to play XBL

Hahaha. Funny, but the shot at Sony was uneeded. Now we wind up with a potential fanboy hoedown as a consequence.

And I was so proud of him until he decided to be a fanboy.
This is why I don't own a console.
(Well, not really, but it sure isn't incentive to buy one.)

EDIT:

Malygris:
"This will also remind people of just how great the Halo games are and remind them that if they're done with the user-created faux-Halo experience, the real Halo is available only on the Xbox 360."

Or you could get the same experience from any FPS that has come out since Halo, for the most part.
(Again, not completely true, but I couldn't resist the parting shot. Guess I can't be a lawyer no--
Oh, wait.)

I prefer the Xbox 360 to the PS3 and Wii, but Microsoft as a company needs to shut up and suck less.

Aren't both Halo 1 and 2 out on PC as well? I guess since MS likes to ignore the fact they're losing to Nintendo they figure they can ignore PCs as well

Oh, come on. It was clearly just a joke, and you can't blame a man for being(or at least pretending to be) a fanboy for his employer.

I wonder if he makes two separate wages: Lawyer wage and fanboy wage... I'd work that job :D

He did do really well considering he is a lawyer.

I looked at the first contestant on that comic strip, then back to McGowan's parting comment and had a good laugh. I hope that was intended.

Microsoft made windows before anyone knew what an xbox was...
v_v

Also, microsoft isn't losing to nintendo unless they're targeting the same audience, which they're not.

Zing of the daaaaaay~

Kudos to the attorney, wish more people could be level headed like him.

Nice words attorney... a silent, subtle and public fuck you.

I applaud them for not jumping on the lawsuit bandwagon. "OMG we made that! STOP IT! Give us (INSERT INSANE AMOUNT OF $$$ HERE) for unspecified damages!"

Not to mention witty.

Oooh!!!
Ice BURN!!!

Love how he rises above the fanboyism, but doesn't really.

microsoft are such good sports

and sony got rinsed

Wow. This is pretty impressive, to say the least. I don't know if it can be taken as a sign of something new, though.
