E3 2008: Microsoft Joins With Netflix

image

During its press conference, Microsoft announced that it would be forming a partnership with Netflix, allowing 360 owners to watch Netflix movies via their consoles.

It only works if you're already a Netflix customer, but you'll be able to watch movies with the members of your live Party, a new feature of the overhauled dashboard. This partnership more than doubles the amount of TV and movie content available on Live.

You won't have access to all of Netflix, just the instant viewing queue, but it's still pretty damn nifty.

This is several different kinds of awesome, and might be the thing that pushes me over the edge to sign up for Netflix.

The temptation... Xbox has broken the boundaries between all forms of media, I'm beginning to think that Microsoft is gonna win...

I'm very excited about this. As an avid Netflix user, I'll be getting even more value out of my account.

Best 10 bucks a month I regularly spend.

darn, now i might have to buy that $100 Roku box.

While sounding very cool, I remember looking through Netflix's instant view movie list and finding very little worth watching for free except some old classics. Although, this may push them to update some of that content.

And even after finding movies I wanted to watch, I've still never managed to get the player to work on their site. Not that that will be an issue for Live.

there are a lot of great documentaries and music DVDs and independant films. it just doesn't have that much that people are familiar with.

the great thing though is that most of the documentary content was shot on video, so it doesn't suffer from a 480p playback

The list has improved, especially since they went free for Instant view content. This is awesome news for sure.

Ok, want to clarify something -- if you are a Live subscriber, you are now also a Netflix customer. You'll only have access to a limited number of Netflix titles (the instant watch queue) but you won't need to pay anything additional.

So hot.

I would be a lot more excited about this if I didn't live in the UK and therfore, can't get Netflix. Kudos to Microsoft though for continuing to expand Live functionality.
