E3 2008: Nintendo Announces GTA on DS

Nintendo delivered a few surprises during its press conference at this year's E3, including news of a brand new Grand Theft Auto game made exclusively for the DS.

The game, called Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, will arrive on the Nintendo DS this winter. It is set in a modern day Liberty City, and features a custom game engine, new characters, and the classic free roaming GTA gameplay.

Sadly, we didn't get to see any more of it than the logo, and we weren't informed how it will take advantage of the DS' touch screen, if at all.

When they say "classic GTA gameplay", how classic are we talking? I can't imagine them successfully pulling off GTAIII style gameplay on the DS, but if it's like the originals, this could be great news indeed.

by classic I think classic as in top down, or at least that's all I can see on the DS

Thats not that new. It'll probably be just like GTA Advance, for the Gameboy Advance. It'll be like the 2d top-down gameplay of GTA 1

I honestly don't know what to think about this.

But one things for sure, i'm going to get it...eventually.

It sounds like fun. As long as they have the multiplayer aspect on the first GTAs, well, that would be awesome.

I think stumbleupon brought up the cover for this earlier... at the time I thought it was a joke. It wasn't very funny, but "Chinatown Wars" didn't sound like a GTA title.

I guess I was wrong.

chinatown WARZ!!!!!

Cmon what good game has had "WARS" at the end of it? Chinatown would have just been fine but they had to add "WARZ!!"

Advance wars is the only acception =D

Hmm. I was never a fan of the old top-down GTA driving games. I imagine they'll attempt to implement a good bit of "stylus mechanic" into a DS incarnation... depending on how they well they do with that, I may check this one out.
