This frightens me a little. I'm worried what people (and I) will do for the sake of badges. I agree with Pedro though, a reward for not getting banned or probated after a 1000 posts would be great.

I dunno... this badge (or trophy or achievement) thing is getting a little out of hand. So, how come I still want to earn all of 'em?

I must admit, I'm also a little worried that people will start making random threads and posts just for the sake of badges.

I just hope it doesn't get as bad as the people who make rooms in online games for the sole purpose of getting achievements.

I think that this is a really good idea - I can't think of another forum that has this,and it will keep me interested for a long while (I mean, just look at all the purty colours).

i cant really see there being any problems with the medals, but i think it would be good that you got certain ones for the amount of posts you made, and you could choose what medal you got, well thats just me

So what do we do when we start to say, "well hey I should have X badge", cause its already happend with me about the "Has set an avatar" badge :(

Well, Forum Vagabond is impossible at the moment...Regular's coming soon, and Landmark would be difficult. But I believe I already should have "I can has friend"?

some of these badges are a little...unnecesary. Like adding friends and setting and avatar. It's the forum equivilent of "acid reflex"

Two quick things. First, we know about the ad overlapping the badge descriptors in your profile. We're working on that.

Secondly, yes, some asshats will undoubtedly do stupid things to try and earn badges artificially. Fortunately, we do a pretty good job of policing the forums, which should keep such shenanigans to a minimum.

Two minor details. I do have "Bestest Friend", which I really shouldn't have. And the badges track invisible details, like I had over 10 friends, but some people got banned...Indigo... ;)

Hey SA, I'm with...whoever said something the like on page one...can we PLEASE have one instituted for good grammar/correct useage of punctuation and capitalization/proper formatting? Some of the stuff posted here would make my eyes bleed, were I a forum novice. Is it really so hard to put your posts together with proper sentence structure? No, not really, just about as hard as...uploading your own avatar.

You were right, but the problem was a typo in the badge description. It was supposed to be 10, not 50 :P

Badges sounds like a fun idea, like the xbox achievement system. Is there a badge for having a certain number of badges? :P

Fun, fun, fun. I don't really like the way it makes each post longer- it makes everything a less short and snappy than it was. But I do like collecting things. As long as people don't start sending out 50 PMs a day to net that next badge, I'm down with it.

I feel like a Girl Scout, except I sucked as a Girl Scout. Although they are cool to have, I suspect they are also a symptom for me at least of being without a life.

The badges seem to be a bit bugged at the moment...I'm sure it'll be sorted out though.

Remember, there is also the possibility that the GamerLympic medals may just turn into badges. *cough*

Now, a small problem here. I do have a Warcry account from 2007 but I didn't know it was the same as the Escapist; before someone cracks my knuckles for multi-accounting, can I join the two?

As has been mentioned previously, in addition to badges that are earned automatically (such as for a certain number of friends are posts), the staff will be handing out badges individually for whatever random reasons we like.

And believe me, we are HUGE fans of good grammar around here. :)

Except that you get them for participating in social activities, albeit online.

"Square Eyes" : Watched over 20 Escapist Videos.
"Always a bridesmaid" : Entered competitions but never won.

The badges are awesome! If they sort out the minor bugs that seem to have sneaked under the radar they'll be even better. Perhaps you (admins) could give negative badges? Something to remind a person that they suck. Like "Forum troll" if they continue to be a troll or "Acheivement whore" if they beg for a badge?
