Actually, according to Wikipedia, the Ps3 is the most energy efficient machine that contributes to fighting cancer. User was banned for: Poll: What is your opinion on the Metal Gear Solid storylines?. (Permanent) |

Now if only we can watch Blu-Rays while folding, and productivity will increase even more so. User was banned for: Poll: What is your opinion on the Metal Gear Solid storylines?. (Permanent) |

Didn't I post this before -_-, this is only CNET, but:
I'll go check the cited sources on Wikipedia. Either way, the difference in only 10 watts, although it seems to vary from site to site, and I can't tell if some sites are biased towards the 360 or the PS3. The WII comes up top (read lowest waste) on all of them anyway, so it really doesn't matter. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3921 Joined: 17 Feb 2008 | I'm not sure but I am going to have to assume that you have misunderstood Indigo_Dingo. as he stated below. Indigo_Dingo: emphasis on. fighting cancer. as you can see he wasn't saying the PS3 was the most energy efficient console, but rather the most efficient machine that contributes to fighting cancer. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1811 Joined: 8 Apr 2008 | O... K... so, long lost sarcasm aside, when the Wii did something very similar, it was awesome... PS3 is a little too late to the party for me to be impressed yet again. "We do what everyone else does but with prettier graphics," seems to be the PS3's motto. Oh, and that's not a flame, if I could afford to, I'd buy a PS3 |

PS3 fights cancer? o_0 Really? You mean it gives off powerful enough radiation to destroy cancerous cells? Edit: My mistake, just read up on that folding at home thing. Still don't get what it's supposed to do... |

How many cancer patients does it take to screw in a lightbulb? |

On the Record Posts: 6209 Joined: 10 Mar 2008 | Well, what is anyone complaining about? It was bound to happen eventually, I don't believe the 360 has any sortof service like this (correct me if i'm wrong). It's just a nice touch to something, it isn't meant to be used seriously. I mean, how many people use the Wii's Weather and News channels? It's much to slow for me, when I could easily just click something on the internets. Similarly, I'm not really going to care to much about this addition, it's just going to be something to keep me occupied if i'm bored or something. Plus, I can watch the earth rotate in HD :D |

Can't you use a PC for folding@home or is this something different. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2904 Joined: 12 May 2008 | Folding started on PC, but most PC's use about 350 watts. PS3 uses about a third of that while folding. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3447 Joined: 8 May 2008 |
The Dell Studio Hybrid does 27-30 Watts. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 4637 Joined: 15 Jun 2008 | wow...thats completly pointless, so you can use your ps3 to see the weather (which you can see on a tv or a computor without having to turn your ps3 on...to be honest its just another pointless update. |

Well, duh? Though I wouldn't be surprised if people bought a PS3 and just used it for Folding@Home/Life with Playstation. Seriously, you guys are acting like Sony intends this to be a huge leap forward. It's not, it's a nice addon nothing to special about it. I've played around with it, it's about the same thing as the Weather/News Channel on the Wii only it's in one channel instead of two and I get to listen to "Bicycle Race" while stareing at the Earth :D What are you so pissy about? (I'm 100% sure that if the 360 got this sortof update, you'd all be saying "cool" or something, but nope, because it adds a nice touch to the folding@Home project, you're all cynical and say it's pointless. Well, DUH!) |

That is exactly what I was going to say.
You think working together to try and cure diseases such as cancer is a waste of time? Do I even need to start augruing with you on that? |
King of the Yetis Posts: 2539 Joined: 15 Jul 2008 | One big word guys. Overpopulation. So we've got Sony to thank when we're all driving around in dune buggies shooting each other with crossbows and fighting over the last remaining water supply. |

Beat Writer Posts: 175 Joined: 19 Aug 2008 | is it ironic i just watched Mad Max 30 mins before reading the 'sand dunes and cross bows' comment? anyways... i leave my ps3 on nearly all the time, and when i'm out at work, or sleeping, it's sitting there, folding@home, and it makes me feel better... the same way putting the 4p change from my cigs goes in the 'cancer research' tin at my local newsagent |

In response to the first part, no, just coincidental. By this stage, I hardly notice the F@H work that my PC is doing in the background. The program is mostly unintrusive, although as I'm not doing it on the GPU yet, I'm not contributing as efficiently as a PS3 would. Sony Launches Life with PlayStation
The PlayStation 3's news and weather service "Life with PlayStation" has been released over the PlayStation Network to compete with the Wii Channels.
Dubbed a "lifestyle service", Life With PlayStation delivers streaming weather reports from The Weather Channel with realistic cloud imagery provided by University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center and news via Google News displayed on a Google Earth-esque world satellite imagery from The Earth Television Network. Over 60 cities around the world will be covered by these information services.
Along with the Life With PlayStation update, Stanford's Folding@Home project received an upgrade with advanced simulation of protein fold. Users contributing to science through the program can now view rankings to compare their contributions against other gamers worldwide.
To install Life With PlayStation, click the Folding@Home button on the PS3's XrossMediaBar.
