Fable 2 Collector's Edition Gets Nerfed

image

Bad news for gamers who pre-ordered the Limited Collector's Edition of Fable II: Most of that cool stuff you were promised isn't actually going to be included with the game.

Lionhead Studios announced today that the game is now in manufacturing, and confirmed its release on October 21 in North America and October 24 in Europe. However, due to "supply chain issues," the company also said it's making changes to the Limited Collector's Edition of the game, and that the five Fate Cards, the Hobbe figure and the premium game box will not be part of the package. Instead, the Collector's Edition will now include only the game, a bonus DVD with a "Making Of" video, and for Xbox 360 owners with Xbox Live subscriptions, bonus game content including The Hall of the Dead dungeon, The Wreckager legendary cutlass and the Spartan armor and energy sword.

To make up for the shortcoming, Lionhead said it was reducing the suggested retail price of the game by ten bucks, from $79.99 to $69.99 (although actual prices may vary), and will also be offering a special Fable soundtrack, including a "wonderful selection" of music from the original Fable and three new tracks from Fable II, as a free download from sumthingdigital.com. The soundtrack will be available beginning October 6 with the "FableCollection" promotion code.

Is it just me or is there something mind-blowingly ironic about the collector's edition of a Peter Molyneux game being cut back a few weeks before release because the company can't deliver what it promised?

Yeah, Peter Molyneux does those kind of things. You just have to forgive him and admit he is doing a good job with everything else! Well... it is going to be a good game, right?

At least they are trying to make up for it, what with the reduced price and extra bonus item.

So the only things worth paying Collectors Edition prices for have been removed, and instead you get crap that nobody really wants and still must pay extra for it?

Who in the hell ever gave a shit about "The Making of" crap in games? Rarely if ever with movies, but games? Oooh, yeah. Real hot shit it is.

This upsets me. I had the limited edition pre-ordered and paid for and now all the best stuff is taken out? Oh well. I still want the special content (Armor/Weapons/Dungeon) so I'll just go get my $10 discount from GameStop and get it anyway.

While I understand it can be frustrating to most people, at the very least, Peter should be given props for at least attempting to quell people's anger by offering some sort of substitution and reduced price.

How many other companies (*cough* EA) would do this at all? Most would just cancel an offering with no redemption attempts.

This Reminds me of Fable, except in that case they just re released the game 6 months later with the extra content. I Still want a signed letter from Pete apologizing for not making the game I was told I was buying.

Makes me glad I don't waste extra money with pre-orders.

Wasn't his fault. Supplier's fault.

You mean that expansion with original they told you about that was the released 6 months later with the extra content? Who can trust those guys to do exactly what they say. They let the guy who likes talking say his ideas, then they tell you're getting the game you was told you were buying.

More importantly Liondead is releasing the five Fate Cards, unaltered, as .pdf's for you to download and print.

We can't blame Mr.Molyneux(man I love that last name, it just sounds nice)for a supplier's fault, while he is in no way talented at marketing wiz, he is still a great developer and is inovative.

I myself ignored all of his hype and I enjoy his games. For those disappointed, just ignore him until you play that game, and it will be fun.

Dunno why you're all blaming Lionhead and Molyneux, they only developed the game, it's not up to them to organise the suppliers, that's Microsoft's job. Still, I'm insanely annoyed that Microsoft have fucked this up, they've had months to get this all sorted.

They're blaming him because failing to meet promises is pretty much been what Molyneaux is known for.

Doesn't sound like a bad deal for a few $ more than the regular edition. It is sad that Fable 2 is already off to a "they're not delivering what is promised" start. :(

I think Fable would have been received a LOT better if it had not been for all the hype. The part that disappoined me the most about the first one (overlooking all of the unkept promises) was the short length of the main story.

I lose a heap of good stuff and get to keep ten bucks?
I can't post what I'm thinking for fear of getting banned but What the hell Molyneux?.

Stop promising what you can't deliver, and what's the deal they can't get any of the stuff out? How about they just say you can have it now or wait and get bonus stuff.

I wait and wait and already I'm getting screwed over...

The deal is that the supplier (i.e., someone outside of Lionhead) screwed up. It isn't Molyneux's fault. It's like me blaming Harmonix for Wal-Mart not having a Rock Band 2 drum set.

I know that this may not be Molyneux's fault, but, is anyone keeping track of how many fibs he's told?

I just think it shouldn't matter i don't buy a game for it's bonus content i but a game for fun and enjoyment now if he said there was extra levels equipment stuff part of the game taken away then i would be angry

When they're done right, it's always cool to see the behind the scenes. Sometimes you see things they left out and why they left them out.

I really like the way Valve does the commentary mode - it's like getting the 'behind the scenes' story while you play the game.

I do. The problem is that, as someone who wants to get into game development, they do very, very little to shed light on any of the development process. The average person already has no idea how many thousands of hours of hard, hard work from hundreds of people goes in to making these games that they either dismiss or accept after a grand total of five seconds of footage (it's incredibly disheartening, really). Putting up a few moving pictures of an untextured model going through an animation sequence and then saying "THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE A GAME" certainly does not help to dispel the myth, either. Maybe they'd like to show us the dozens of meetings discussing difficulty systems or game balance or use of copyrighted materials or level design, or maybe walk us through their AI decision trees, collision systems, or show us how to make a method that will randomly generate vegetation. Maybe they want to talk about the graphics, and the dozens of rendering passes that are required to do proper lighting and shading of any given scene? The reason those "making of" features are so disappointing is because they all cater to the lowest common denominator, which happens to be really, really low these days.

Count me in. I think they're a nice addition to the material. On the other hand, I don't think they're enough to justify a Collector's Edition on their own, or even as the primary upgrade. I'd be cutting my order for a Fable 2 CE down to a standard release immediately, if I actually had any intention of buying it in the first place.

Actually now that I think about it, God of War series was way more interesting when I saw all the making of stuff. Though, that was on the standard edition and it was just unlockable content...

So I'm with Malygris and searanox, make these bloody things worthwile! My pre-order bonus for Crysis was a god damn concept art disc. Collectors won't be that OCD.

Oh yeah, I got a limited edition of Medieval 2, it had the soundtrack and 2 DVDs of History Channels coverage on The Crusades. You'd probably think "boring!" but once you played the game you'd actually feel like you have an advantage lol.

Still, the kicker was that it was the same price as the regular edition. I guess they realized that what they were offering really wasn't worth an extra 10 or 20 dollars.

That's true, but there must have been someone along the way from Lionhead or Microsoft who chose which supplier to use. I think that person and the supplier should be blamed for this recent development. It is a shame that so many people are inclined to put blame on Molyneaux.

Not actually irony. It would be more ironic if they've sworn to never take anything out of the game, but this is exactly what people expect from Lionhead so its just... y'know... there. Personally, I haven't ordered a Collector's Edition, but if I did I'd probably be more happy with the new merchandise than the old stuff.

well that is really a shame. I really do miss the era when games included all sorts of tangible goodies in the package. Stuff like that really added to the immersion level of the game. For all its flaws Tabula Rasa really did put together a really fun collectors edition. Something more developers should follow suit.

It pisses me off a bit but I don't reserve anything in limited edition unless it has extra in game content so as long as they don't come out tomorrow saying there removing it I'll be OK.

Seriously? All they're doing after dropping all the COOL swag is lowering the suggested price by 10 bucks? Do they think that makes up for all the stuff? This is ridiculous. Next thing you know, the next Molyneux epic will end up being nothing but a picture he printed on his home computer.

I agree. If they really want to make up for all the cool stuff they cut out of the Collector's Edition, they should just flat out cancel the So-Called "Collector's Edition" version of the game and just give away the Fable Soundtrack & Making Of Fable II DVD for free to anyone that pre-ordered the normal version of the game. And if you did pre-ordered the Collector's Edition, then you would get all your money back.
