Play Calls Playstation Home Boring

image

The British games magazine has warned readers to "prepare to be bored" by PlayStation Home.

The magazine had summer access to Sony's PlayStation Home virtual world, but found the experience less than thrilling.

Load times, it seems, are an integral part of the Home experience. According to the article, "For every new building that we entered, a 30-50mb additional update was needed, which was a little bit frustrating- why not condense everything into one 500mb download, and cut out the middleman?"

Don't worry visitors; there's no rush to meet with anyone. Home's empty servers turned the bright, open world into "some kind of nightmarish, Sony-generated Dystopia," and a bit "Orwellian."

Not everything Play wrote was negative, though. When attending a Sony-sponsored event with thirty or so other early users, the staff was surprisingly able to engage in a few "non-terrifying conversations with other people."

"Were we hanging around with friends, rather than folk we've never met, the Home experience would surely be richer and more fulfilling," Play concluded. Home is still in its extended beta.

At least it's free!

So they tried it on empty servers? How can you really review that?

Plus it's not like it's an actual GAME, it's the frontend for the new PSN system.

Prepare for a Sony bitch-fit. I'd give my thoughts on Home, but Sony will never release it.

So is the flu.

That was the only bad thing said about it mind, i have the magazine in front of me now and there was only good things said after that.

I have been saying since this was first announced, when it finally does come out it will be no good. Looks as if I called it. Though since it is still the beta, me and play may have to eat our words. It's unlikely in my opinion, but possible.

Wow, I never would've thought a frontend that totally wasn't Second Life but totally was could've possibly been boring.

Oh wait.

Seriously how this is going to make the PS3 the "must buy" console is beyond me.

And just like the flu, it'll be a reason to stay home from work.

:P

Again. Home is just the frontend for the PSN community. It's not going to be some killer app. Why is everyone so disappointed/angry with what amounts to a REALLY fancy message board?

They tried a community based application when nobody else was on.

Who would've thought they might not have liked it?

I think it's an interesting feature, but the whole project has seemed like an odd use of resources, as though a nice 2D feature set like Xbox LIVE was all that was required and they sent a massive dev team to overkill the entire online concept. They went from nothing to overdrive, and it hasn't been polished yet to make it worth the investment, at least that's how it seems.

I'm looking forward to trying it out and don't dislike the idea at all, but everyone's acting like Sony's pinning it's hopes on it.
To the news that Home is an initially mediocre experience Sony haters say "Ha, take that losers." and Sony lover say "Oh God NO, it can't be TRUE!"?
It's interesting software and I will probably enjoy using it, as the community experience on PSN leaves much to be desired, but who ever said it was the second coming of Christ? Why is everyone so polarized over it?

Nonetheless, I'd rather have a virus than Home. It would probably take up less space, too.

Same reason people brag about 12 year olds on XBL. You really don't know about it until you either discover it by accident or hear about it on some gaming website.

Just another thing you don't have to do and can freely ignore.

Slap some quests in there for furniture, upgrades, and satchelpants.
Let characters have a bank, lightspeed mail system, and /dance.
Have social events in which a simplistic task must be begrudgingly fought down for more upgrades.

Sony can have the next world of warcraft!

Pretty much everything NumberNine is saying, you guys are acting like Sony's riding on this to save their asses. Their not.

Home's a cool (free) application, it's not meant to be some in-depth, amazing, breath-taking experience that you will spend for over 50+ hours. It's a nice addon and I'm gald they're atleast doing something other than making avatars that do absolutely nothing (see: Miis).

Home is a good step for consoles (hint, notice the word consoles.), I do admit it does look very similar to Second Life but what else could they do without;
A) Making it into an MMO
B) Make it seem like an actual game when it's not
C) Isolating the social aspect of online
D) Putting to much effort into this and what the player does?

Home is a good step for consoles in online socializing, and I'm glad it's comming around (hopefully). Do I expect great things from it? No, not really, but I do expect a cool addon to a solid online package.

And the virus causes a disease. What was the point of that?

Really funny how people are now not saying this is what Sony was banking on to save their asses wheras I could've sworn a lot of people were talking that way about a week ago. Isolated incident? Mayhaps.

I doubt it was actually the case either.

Exactly. They even said that the fun bit was the interaction, so, if the servers had some population, then, by their own admittance, it would be fun.

i bet it turns into a spam packet of people Looking for other people to play this game..

runtheplacered:

you'd think Sony PR would have thought of that. My surprise is why anyone else is at all surprised it is boring. It's just a kooky storage medium for your games and profiles that allows for potential social discourse. It's basically Sony's answer to Xbox live. I wouldn't spend more than a few minutes on live if I wasn't planning on downloading something or joining a game.

Not for another fifty years, no.

Sony will definately have to do something about that download problem they mentioned though. Stopping for a download when you enter a room is going to drive people away from it very quickly as they just won't have the patience to endure it. One big download to start with then small, automatic, updates later on is the way it should work. Otherwise the whole thing is going to have its kneecaps blown off right from the start.

On my connection 50MB would take about half an hour to download.

Oh well, no Home for me.

:(

Looks interesting none the less! Ill still be checking it out

This doesn't look too good for the PS3 since Play (if I'm thinking of the correct magazine) is Sony's biggest cheerleader outside of the Official Playstation Magazine.

Well No wonder- It's a beta, after all. Not like everyone will be there.

Does anyone still read game magazines nowadays? I mean the actual printed media? I find it a waste of money, since most gaming news can be obtained through a few websites such as this one.
