| Rock Band 2 "Not Competing" With Guitar Hero World Tour
Taking a page from the Sony playbook, Dan Teasdale of Harmonix says the developer's new Rock Band 2 game isn't actually competing with Activision's Guitar Hero World Tour.
Rock Band 2 is a music game from Electronic Arts in which up to four players form "bands" and use instrument-shaped controllers to play along with pre-recorded music. Guitar Hero World Tour is a music game from Activision in which up to four players form "bands" and use instrument-shaped controllers to play along with pre-recorded music. Despite the fact that they have different names, some observers believe there are enough similarities between the two that they could end up competing with one another over the Christmas season as flagship titles for their respective publishers. But Teasdale, lead designer on Rock Band 2, doesn't agree.
"I don't think we're competing," he said in an interview with Eurogamer. "At least from a design perspective, we're going after two completely different audiences. Rock Band is about an authentic band gameplay experience. We want people to have fun at parties, and we want to reach a wide audience."
Guitar Hero, on the other hand, which was originally developed by Harmonix, is designed to be a more "technical experience," he said. "There's nothing wrong with that, it's a valid experience; it's just not what we're going for."
"I don't sit around going, 'How do we beat Guitar Hero?'" he added. "I don't need to. My team's got more than enough great ideas."
And even if you do persist in thinking that the two games may inevitably come into competition over the holiday, that's okay with Teasdale. "Call of Duty and Halo are both great franchises you can enjoy," he said. "It's the same with Guitar Hero and Rock Band."

| I'm curious to play both and see which wins out.
On a side note.... who has seen the Heidi Klum ad for Guitar Hero World Band? |
| Lima: I'm curious to play both and see which wins out.
Played em both. Hated GH:WT. They changed everything around. It feels strange and I don't like it. I much prefer Rock Band now where I liked GH before. |
| HMX has a point. The games are similar, but from my experience with Guitar Hero games, and my experiences with Rock Band and Rock Band 2, then watching videos from World Tour, they are similar, but completely different challenge-wise. |
| Whenever people say "where not competing," with a superficially indentical product. I always take it as "They wupped us so bad we're not even going to try,".
How true that is may be up for debate, but that's how it always strikes me. |
| I going the way of Rock Band. I played GH:WT and i hated what they did to the drums. I would much rather play Rock Band. I think rock Band also has an AC/DC expansion pack! |
| GHIII was bad enough. Too loose; I didn't feel I was playing the notes. I was stumbling along and it was saying "yeah you hit those" when I knew I hadn't. |
| They both are very much the same gameplay, spare a few points. So how is it they are not going to be competing? Especially since everytime someone even mentions rockband or guitar hero online, some douche rants about how rockband owns all that is holy in simulated music/button mashing, showing already people like to show comparisons. You have to be slightly retarded or missing the portion of your brain that scream logic to not think these two games will not compete, because not everyone wants 2 clunky plastic drum sets in their living rooms...it messes with the feng shui. |
| I could say the same for the original Rock Band as well. Mainly since it still isn't out in my country! I've just given up on it now. Go ahead EA, keep your stupid game. I don't even want it any more. So there *childishly pokes tongue out* |
| Loved the Guitar Hero series (except for Rock the 80's - NO!) but I also loved Rock Band. You can't honestly say that two games so similar are not competing (remember that GH copied RB with the new instrument peripherals). It is so on... |
| Lies Fe Ninja it came out a little while ago |
| I hate games like this.
How can junk compare to junk? |
