Fault of the parents. They should have been regulating his playing time, and at any rate, wasn't friday a school day.

Yes. But Saturday, when this started, was not. Neither was Sunday, when he collapsed.

Come on, this is just the culling of the weak people in society :D Notice how none of his mates collapsed, this guy is obviously not built for hardcore gaming :)

Geez, do I have to nearly kill myself to be, "TEH HARRDCORe"? I'll stick to being bad at games as long at they're fun. And WoW, even at it's best, isn't fun. Not that it's the only one, the "hardcore" thing has squeezed the fun out of a lot of games for me.

Is collapsing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon any less silly than collapsing while playing WOW?

In the eyes of the masses, I'd have to say yes. And I agree, because come on. If you die at the end of a marathon, atleast you'll die knowing you never gave up. If you die from too much Lich King, you'll die knowing you got that sweet epixx set? Yeah, you can be real proud of that.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... I didn't want to post this but I just can't help the laughter this post has caused me...

Am I the only one who thinks that honestly, WoW does a service by rooting out these obsessives from the rest of the population?

Ohh pshh 24 hours is nothing, I've gone on flights and switched planes for longer than that. My best is 48(ish) hours. Oop sounds like we should have a competition "Who can stay up the longest." *

hehe, I managed 50 hours for a uni thing, 24 hour scav hunt around the city then results then party then die about 6am two days after i last slept, I was pretty rooted, especially as i was running around Melbourne for most of that time(and I had a physics prac which was bad)

True... but if it wasn't WoW it would be alcohol or Jodie Foster

The hypocrisy arises when the justification for dying during a marathon is that you never gave up. Finishing a marathon, assuming it's not for charitable reasons, is as pointless as getting an epic set of armor. There's value in running a marathon because it makes us feel good, but that's it really.

Most of us shouldn't even be running marathons; it was originally a sport confined to a small group of elite athletes. When the NYC marathon was first held in 1970 only 127 people competed, 55 of whom actually finished. The average completion time for a male marathoner was 3:32 in 1980. Today, it's more than 4:20. A lot of people walk the marathon, or run parts of it and walk others. They're useless to the progression of the sport, except for the fact that they grow it as an industry. Videogame players are the same way, they play for themselves, contributing to the industry only as a consumer, and its stupid to do so until death, but no stupider than the 43 year old man with 2 kids who crossed the finished line and died of a heart attack thereafter.

wow...first time I read this I thought it said "lion king" and I was like "wtf the movie?".

but this is just another stupid act of humanity, and I'd like to say something to the dad:

HEY IDIOT! Yeah you....how bout don't your 15 year old play a video game for 24 hours straight? At what point did you think that was a good plan? I like how "his father said he plans on limiting the amount of time his son can spend playing the game". Oh, so it only took a seizure to get off your ass and do some parenting for obviously the first time in your life?

I'm truly impressed at the scope of human stupidity and incompetence when it comes to MMORPGS.

I don't blame the kid or the parents for knowing he was doing an "all nighter".

What I do blame is the fact that probably wasn't the first time the kid did that or that the probably already played 8 hours daily.

People don't just collapse like that, the kid probably had it coming.

That's my guess.

I might just be grasping at straws her, but don't you think it just might be possible that the father thought his kid could control himself, and then took steps when it became clear he couldn't? If so...that isn't bad parenting, it just means the father isn't a control freak.

Lightweight. Pfft. I mean 24hours? *rolls eyes*

I second that. Only 24 hours? How have worked hard labor at Pacific Bell climbing telephone poles and fixing lines for upwards to 16-18 hours a day during winter. If you want to see real hard core labor watch "The Deadliest Catch". Those guys stay up for days hauling in the crab and make us all look like wimps. And this person collapsed after 24 hours of gaming? I would check him for drugs. Meth might be involved.

please, I think the father should have figured out his kid had no self control after, I don't know, maybe the first 12-13 hours?

Yeah, because my parents never let me do anything like that. Oh, wait, they did, because they gave me credit for knowing my own limits. The father thought the kid knew his limits. The kid didn't. Father reacts by setting his own limits. Sounds reasonable to me.

12 hours is perfectly reasonable? I would think that after the first entire half of the day, any normal parent would think "My son hasn't moved, eaten, or done anything else this entire day. I should be concerned." But no, he didn't. He decided that a 24 hour gaming session was perfectly normal and healthy and there should be no concern. Until the kid had a seizure, of course. THEN something is amiss. What could have possibly gone wrong? Oh wait. It's obvious. The guy should have stopped this stupid activity long before it became this stupid problem. But then again, we don't want another kid to get himself killed because a parent took away there video games, right? So let him get away with whatever he wants, right?

12 hours is perfectly reasonable?

As someone who regularly embarks on over 12 hour game sessions and has absolutely zero issues beyond a bit of sleep to catch up on, I would say yes.

Hey, any of you ever tried to get a complete WoW addict to stop playing? Especially the week after the new expansion came out?

Try convincing them to play another game with you, I've got two friends who, well, they aren't addicts, but they've certainly reached 70 pretty quickly. Bastards chose a week of playing Wrath of the Lich King over a weekend of Team Fortress 2 games *Sniffs*.

Hmm, so many points to make.

1. What a loser. Playing WoW until you go into convulsions? You'd think he would have realized he needed to stop somewhere before that point. Loser.

2. It was only 24 hours. I've never quite reached that but I would have thought somehting like this would have taken a bit longer. He was weak.

3. This truly is what WoW does to people. It has advanced from slowly stealing people's souls and money to phyically attacking them. Horrible. The plague will spread from Sweden, people. I promise you this.

I don't think the parents are at fault though. They might be, but we don't have enough information to say so. Blaming them only on the basis that he played too long isn't fair. We blame parents for being not understanding and too constricting of video game playing, and now we blame them for being too loose? They're right to let their 15 year old sit in his room and play WoW. Maybe they could have taught him to be more aware of what he's doing to his body, but that'd be hard. Maybe he'll learn from now on.

Good thing the father knew he was playing for that long and didn't MAKE HIM GO OUTSIDE AND DO SOMETHING. Thank God for good parenting.

Well, at least now they've seen what it can do to people and are limiting his time on it. Part of parenting is learning from your mistakes, so I say half-decent parenting.

I'm a hypocrite? What? Why?! I'm 20 years old i can play what i want for however long i want. However, surely a 15 year old isn't old enough to be up for 24hours at a time playing video games.

I guess the kid just has weak stamina or something. Nothing wrong with either the kid, or his parents. Apparently the kid can't take the LAN party lifestyle as good as some others. He didn't die, he didn't even get injured. Lesson learned and move on, knowing your newly found limits. This is more a story of growing up, then it is of epic fail.
I've passed out from exhaustion on a 3 day LAN before in the past, now I know I won't make 3 days awake, so I won't even try. I got sick/weak a few times at longer LANs, so now I watch my nutrition better.

Live and learn.

"Reports that World of Warcraft players from France are laughing and pointing in the general direction of Sweden remain unconfirmed." --> ha ha ha

Not only are the parents at fault, but those kids are, as well. I mean, seriously, if you're gonna play a game for more than a few hours, make sure you're prepared and take breaks for food, toilet and sleep. You'd have to be pants-on-head retarded to ignore hunger pains while playing a game. And energy drinks are no substitute for substance.
