Not as bad as the kid who ran away from home recently, but seriously, parents need to pay more attention to what their kids are doing. I respect his father for saying that he'll start to limit his son's play time, but I don't think it should have gotten to that point in the first place. | |

Ohh pshh 24 hours is nothing, I've gone on flights and switched planes for longer than that. My best is 48(ish) hours. Oop sounds like we should have a competition "Who can stay up the longest." As long as the father doesn't go on some rant about how video games hurt his family and such, I think this will blow over relatively quick.

I get it, you're trying to make it look like the father is a bad parent. I almost missed it. This kid is 15 Years old. He has a computer and free time and wanted to play a Computer Game. He also happens to have a Dad who said it was cool with him. Sounds pretty freaking sweet to me. Then he stays up for 24 hours (who hasn't done this?) probably eating junk food and drinking soda/energy drinks. It becomes to much for him and he has some adverse medical reactions. And you blame his dad? It's not his Dad's fault. And it's not the games fault. It is this kids fault and no one else's. By the way if you're Dad threatened you like you imply he did, I'm just glad he wasn't my father. Oooh? Was that too close to home? You don't like it when someone does this to your dad? I don't think the parents can be blamed for this one. If I had a kid that age (and I'm old enough to have a legit perspective on this, I'm not some 15-year-old myself) and he wanted to have some friends over for a balls-out weekend-long LAN, I'd be all for it. It's not the sort of thing you want your kid to be doing every weekend, but once every couple of months or so? Knock yourself out. We can't judge the parents' permissiveness regarding the boy's gaming habits without knowing their level of knowledge and involvement with those habits. But I think it's fair to say that if this is the first time he's reacted like this to a semi-hardcore gaming session, then they're handling it appropriately and all is well. | |
I don't blame the father, I blame the kid for not knowing his limits. Then again, I'm being a bit of a hypocrite, seeing as I recall playing WoW, falling asleep at the computer, and waking up an hour later to see my character running into a tree, since I fell asleep with my finger on the up arrow. | |
I actually laughed when I read this. I don't put all the blame on the father, I'd say he just as much to blame as the kid. This kid is just that, a kid. 15 or not, he obviously didn't know when to stop, take a break, and get some rest. But that's what parents are for: To guide their children because they don't know everything! Even at age 15. What?? A 15 year old doesn't know everything in the world about life?? Well that can't be! Oh wait. My dad would have been fine with an event like this (In fact, he WAS ok with it when I did it when I was younger), but he was responsible enough to poke his head in to see how things were going. | |

There have a been a few times where I've played a game all though the night, I felt like shit in the morning, but thats was really good games (or WoW, oooooooohhhh snap) do to you. | |

I have to say I do feel bad for the kid. We can all sympathize with doing something you love for too long. Three runners in the NYC Marathon died of what amounted to exhaustion. Countless others collapsed. 11 climbers perished attempting to climb K2 this year. Does WOW exist on same epic scale as being a marathon runner or an Alpine mountain climber? No, but If you're not part of the elite few pushing the boundaries of the human body, I would argue that, in principle, you're no better than the obsessed WOW player. Sure your heart may be in better condition, but ultimately most of us are running marathons for ourselves. Is collapsing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon any less silly than collapsing while playing WOW? | |

Swedish Teen Collapses After Too Much Lich King
Hot on the heels of stories that it took just over a day for the first Wrath of the Lich King player to reach level 80 comes news that it took less than a week for Wrath of the Lich King to just about kill its first player.
So says the English-language Swedish news site The Local, which has the report of a 15-year-old boy from Laholm, Sweden who collapsed on Sunday after playing the game for 24 hours straight. The teenager got together with seven of his friends on Saturday for an all-night WoW-fest, but the experience proved too much for him; around 2:00 pm on Sunday he collapsed and went into convulsions in what looked like an epileptic seizure.
"They played all day and all night," the boy's father said. "Maybe they got a few hours of sleep. They ate a little food and breakfast at their computers."
The teenager was taken to hospital by ambulance, where doctors determined that his body had been thrown of out of whack by "a combination of sleep deprivation, lack of food, and too long a stretch of concentrated game playing." He is expected to make a complete recovery, although his gaming time might not bounce back so quickly; his father said he plans on limiting the amount of time his son can spend playing the game. Reports that World of Warcraft players from France are laughing and pointing in the general direction of Sweden remain unconfirmed.
