SinisterDeath: Wait wait wait... So M$ paying off studios like Square Enix, and RockStar, so they can make Exclusive GAMES into Multi-Platform Titles isn't a 'petty move', but Sony making there 'movies' that they OWN the intelictual rights to, ISN'T?!
Serious, I can taste the Hypocracy in this and I tell ya, it don't taste good at all.
Erm... well the first thing is making it so that a game can be played by more people, and widening the media. This means increased sales for the game companies. Whereas Sony's move has mean't a reduction in how many people can watch the movies, meaning less sales for the film companies and Netflicks themselves.
MS made gaming slightly better and gave you more choice, and get gaming industry more money. Sony are trying to give us less, and making the movie industry make less money!

Sony have been using their bottomless pockets for years, poaching developers and titles from the Sega and Nintendo platforms when it was just them. Now that Microsoft is in the game their bullying tactics are matched pound for pound.

So, Microsoft making over 50% of computer games unable to be played on an Apple OS for years somehow doesn't count?
And I'm really sure a signifigant number of people are going to find that the only way they can watch a movie is to stream it on their 360, and not stream it over their PC for free, or go rent a DVD.
SmugFrog: It's a shame if things are going to start going this way.
I thought it was hilarious when I bought my original Xbox and hooked it up to my Sony TV. Even better was hooking up my PSP to my 360 to stream music off of it.
My 360 and PS3 live in harmony too. The controllers even cuddle up together when im finished with them....they spoon! adorable.
The Windows Operating system has undergone a recent update that will require corrective action on the part of some of our vendors. Sony DVD-RW, HD Monitors, and other peripheral devices will need to undergo a dedicated firmware update in order to interact with Windows based PCs. This issue cannot be corrected within Windows, so this will require a recall to be issued on all of your products.
In addition, we regret to inform you that we will not be renewing the license agreement to provide the OS for your Vaio line of PCs and Desktops.
Thank you very much, Microsoft Vendor Relations.
PS. Payback is a B****.
ya this seems most likely to happen out of all choices
rossatdi: Gloves off. This is going to get nasty. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony finds it has licensing issues with their office PCs!
This. Honestly, I don't really see how this can be that smart of a movie on Sony's part. I don't really think they have much to lose by allowing Xbox/Netflix subscriber's access to their movies, but peeving off the company controlling the most used OS in the world over something petty like this could probably have some dire ramifications.

Wish you would have asked me years ago when it was actually happening; my memory barely stretches a week. Pretty sure Squaresoft is one example (funny now that Microsoft are throwing money at Square Enix to move them away from Sony). They actually poached a few from Nintendo. Electronic Arts I think was another one (although the way Sega handled development with the Saturn it kinda strained the relationship between the two of them). EA don't really need anyone these days.
I'm not especially surprised by this move. Since the rise of the DVD, Sony has basically dominated all forms of circular disc-based media and it's various deviations (including Netflix or at least it's physical content), so using their brand licensing to essentially blacklist their competition from receiving their content is, actually, pretty damn clever. Sure, it comes off as a bit of a dick move and as a little underhanded, but it is a pretty smart tactical move.
For the life of me, I can't think of any feasible or practical retaliation along these lines that Microsoft can fire back that them. Sony mainly deals with media and devices that can play it, so Microsoft can't really reach out and touch them on their turf, or at least not easily. So, if anyone has a suggestion for Microsoft's retaliation that is possible, realistic, and of course legal, feel free to chime in.
Well...their first console was originally supposed to be NINTENDO'S. That count?
That's what I was going to say but if I remember right it was Nintendo who made their enemy. I think it was something like they wanted 40% profit of each game or something. I'll be back... later.

There was blow offs on either side. I think it was one of those situations where both companies performed some asshattery, split up, and Sony reamed Nintendo- Nintendo then panicked and rushed out a new console without the CD system it was GOING to have and spent the next 2 or so generations hanging on white knuckled while sega died and Microsoft came into the ring, until they finally pulled themselves up over the ledge with the Wii

I can't remember the exact name but I am almost certain this breaks laws to do with fair competition between companies, like how a supermarket chain can't move next door to your local deli and half the price of the meat next door until the deli moves.

Well, a few years back, there was an issue with CD's produced by Sony BMG. Apparently, when put in a computer, it gave Sony access to all of the data inside of it messed up the computer (sorry, misread the article). Linky.

What I've heard was that Sony and Nintendo were doing fine together, until it turned out that the agreement would allow Sony to make games featuring Nintendo mascots ( i.e. that all of the CD based games would be handled by Sony, and the thing wouldn't make sense without some Nintendo mascots on the CD add-on. I think it was common practice,). Fearing this would lead to a slew of bad Mario and Zelda games, Nintendo pulled the plug, and partnerd with Phillips. Sony, having half a console on hand, said "Fuck it", made the thing a whole console, found some talented studios and some interested directors, and went to market. Nintendo allowed the Phillips CD-i to be made, which actually did lead to 1 crappy Mario game and 3 crappy Zelda games. Not exactly ass-hattery on either side, just the gods of gaming playing a cruel prank on Nintendo.

Except... you know.... backwards compatibility, reliable hardware, workable handheld that works in junction with console...
Microsoft and Sony are just as bad as each other when it comes down to it. Microsoft isn't innovative or original in the slightest, they just happen to have the money to polish other peoples ideas into something workable.

are you on crack? name me one thing microsoft has ever come up with that hasnt been previously done?
Apart from the aforementioned Live?
Hard Drives Media Streaming Wireless Controllers (granted Wavebird beats MS here) In build Voice Comms?
Sony really haven't done anything innovative in a while. They've made alot of optimisations on existing tech however.

Actually, I checked the dates. PS2 network adapter came first. But Dreamcast beat them both.

Yep, and both the
Dreamcast Network adapter (/modem) and PS2 Network adapter were basically useless.
In build LAN (optional Wireless) and a decent online interface was the innovation. MS even beat Valve et al. Though, Steam works much better as an online distribution platform.

Well, thats as much down to the games creators as it is MS, Blizzard always made their games Mac friendly, as did a few other companies, but until the Mac got intel chips, it always required that extra bit of coding and "money spent" for a portion of the market that at the time, was relatively little.
Yes you can stream stuff elsewhere but that isnt what this is about. I personally don't have either a 360 or a PS3, yet I do have Virgin Media, and can watch a movie via that (though its a crappy selection), and how many people have media pcs set up? Or a normal PC wired to their TV. I certainly don't so should I want to stream via PC I have to sit in a cramp area at a desk on a crappy chair. The topic of discussion here is simply about how petty it is for sony to pull the plug on this surely... It's just costing everyone money, and helping no one, not even themselves.

Sony already has a video service on PSN, infact it came out WAAYYYY before this Netflix intergration and was launched on the night of their E3 conference. Though admitedly, it was sudden and out there and I've never really used it myself.
I don't see why everyone is saying that this is a petty move by Sony or why they're surprised, for one it's their own proporty on their opponent's platform and why the hell would they let their movies be on that platform if they already have their movies on their own platform through their own service?
It's not that surprising, it's business, I wouldn't want my crap on my enemies crap so they would get money off of my crap.

XBox Live.
So paying for a service that was free from Sony? Big improvement there
You do realize that Microsoft came up with the idea first, right?
dreamcast had online play before xbox even came out. so did ps2.

Ps2 had a port for a hard Hard drive, as youve said, wave bird did a wireless ps1 control, ps2 games had voice com back in august 2002 with games such as Socom US navy seals, whereas xbox live didnt even come out till november of that year. face it, aside from make gamers pay for a service they can get as good on ps3, microsoft havent done much for gaming. whereas sony and playstation has revolutionised gaming on so many levels

Yes like all that force feedback and analog joystick technology.
Or that idea that Backwards Compatibility can go suck it.
Oh wait.
And where's this Sony-built PS1 wireless controller you seem to be talking about?

well ps3 is backwards compatable with peripherals, you just need a usb converter for the ps3. as for backwards compatable games, sony took the ps2 chip out the ps3 to reduce production costs, to make it cheaper than what a 360 would cost given all the extras needed. if your so bothered about old games, pick up a second hand ps2 for £20, or jus get a 60gb ps3 secondhand. and i never said anythin about a sony wireless ps1 control. wavebird made that, but im assuming it never really caught on cos i only recently heard of it
Wow, make it sound like xbox will never be able to play these movies. It's only an issue with the licensing that they wanted to fix so that it couldn't be openly shared between systems and what not. As soon as that is rectified the movies will return.
