Al X and Ur:
you know what, i don't like nickelback but i think they are right, in fact anyone who actually defends guitar hero or rockband seriously needs to be put in some type of holding institution for being retarded. i like playing rockband and guitar hero sure, but when you can play all the songs on expert and 5 star them and all that jazz, or even play it for a couple hours a day, if you would have picked up ANY instrument instead you would be pretty good by now, and that is a problem. instead of making music and doing something different with your lives, you are gonna play a little squeaky plastic guitar and then have nothing to show for it. that is why guitar hero and rockband are bad.

and a side note, i dont give a fuck how good you are at playing FAKE guitar because in the end you are just a nobody loser who will probably be sitting in your room acting like you are above everyone else because you can play "insert name of rediculously hard song here" on expert.

Just for shits and giggles...how much time do you think you've spent in the last month playing video games of any variety? Because all I took from your angry rant of a post was that anyone who spends time doing something fun that you don't happen to view as worthwhile, is wasting their time. Not every minute of the day needs to be spent doing something "worthwhile" in the traditional sense. Some people like to have fun just for fun's sake.

And as a side note, I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and say, Nickelback can tell me too "OMGZORZ LEARN REAL GUITAR NUB!" when they...learn to play their instruments. I'm not trying to bash anyone who listens to them; we all have our own tastes. Lord knows I listen to my fair share of music that isn't necessarily on the top of the pile when it comes to technical prowess, but just because I listen to it doesn't mean I'm going to claim it's technically advanced.

*edit* Word fix.

This is tantamount to a chartered accountant telling Monopoly players to get accountancy degrees!

Mr Kroeger, you are an idiot.

I'll quit with the Guitar Hero when Nickelback quits with crappy songs and albums...please, this is a terrible band. They're probably jealousy that some of the kid out there are more accomplished musicians than them just from playing Guitar Hero and other such games.

Personally, I like a couple of Nickelback's songs. That's all I can really say about them. However, I do know that music is not my calling, and as such, I will enjoy Guitar Hero, though I play it rarely. I don't think he's saying that Guitar Hero needs to be outlawed, or that people should stop playing it, but that those who actually want to devote their lives to music should focus on real instruments.

To be honest, opinions about what you think about the quality of Nickelback's music aren't relevant to debating the point. Bash Nickelback all you want, they're a proven band with proven album success with proven fanbase, which makes the quote credible regardless of whether or not you think Chad Kroeger should die in a fire.

That being said, I don't agree with what he's saying. In a world where hip-hop and top 40 pop rule the charts, rock has found new exposure in Guitar Hero and Rock Band. It's doubtful that the games are taking away from playing the real instruments and are instead inspiring them to do so.

I'll start a rock band if Nickelback agrees to break up. It's an even deal.

Just gonna say what's likely been said a thousand times already:

I had a bit of interest in learning to play the guitar or drum set before Guitar Hero and Rock Band (I was at least a percussionist in concert band, but never learned the set). After those games, my desire has technically been increased.

But instruments are expensive and time to practice is, well, time consuming.

If someone wants to learn to play an instrument enough, then they will. It's that simple. As for a "lack of rock bands", I don't think there's any real shortage. Then again, I don't pay attention to rock in this country because it sucks. The way I see it, if the only people learning to play guitar and drums actually have a love of music and not a love of the rock star dream, the better.

actually they sound the same because for several songs they ARE the same, there's a site that i'm too lazy to find but they play nickelback songs side by side and and besides minor chord changes they are the same song

This might be what you were referring to. Or perhaps the Youtube version.

It's utterly amazing how many people seem to equate playing Guitar hero or Rock Band with playing real instruments, or at least assume that other people do.

Here's a news flash to everyone: PLAYING GUITAR HERO IS NOT THE SAME AS PLAYING A REAL GUITAR.

This is comparing Apples to Sauerkraut, and should be regarded as such by more people.

There is no need for people to start playing "real" instruments instead of Guitar Hero because there is some worldwide deficit of bands. There is no need to make such a stupid statement claiming thus.

I like Rock Band because it's a rhythm game with a unique control interface. During social gatherings it is a good draw to get people together because you are working toward a common goal, unlike other social games like Raving Rabbids, or Mario Party. It is entertainment.

Generally one starts a band for one of two reasons: You have the desperate need for an outlet for your musical creativity, or you want to make money. Nickelback, of course, fall in the latter category as evidenced by people's ability to mashup two of their songs and they synchronize unsettlingly well (Do a search for "How You Remind Me of Someday".)

So, please. Stop this petty squabbling of "I'm better'n you" because you either play a real guitar instead of "wasting your time" working to get 5 stars on Expert mode; or because you can ace "Between The Fire and the Flames".

Musical rhythm games are like Karaoke.

You never hear any modern dance choreographers bitching about people playing Dance Dance Revolution, do you?

I would bet the true impetus for this idiot statement is that Rock Band and Guitar Hero have introduced people to some of the highest quality rock music available, many of which the general public probably haven't been exposed to, and they are realizing that by being fans of corporate success story bands like Nickelback and other Top 40 "Pop Rock" stars they dove right past the cream of the crop to scrape the bottom of the talent barrel to get their music.

ditto.

this. And this.

it's not boring cause songs that make your head hurt can't be considered "boring"

I've never really understood all the Nickelback hate. I guess in a way it's kind of like all the people who dump on World of Warcraft; you have to think that the vitriol wouldn't be half as powerful as it is if the subject in question wasn't so damned successful.

basically they are corporate rock whores who make VERY bad music, they spout how awesome they are but they keep writing the same music over and over and to top it off the lead singer has some sort of ego trip

This is an awfully lot of bashing on them, I think Nickleback is a really good band but thats mine opinion, I still love some of the older songs they made, don't judge em by that (Shivers) Rockstar song.....

I can kinda understand what they are saying but on the other hand I can't play regular instruments (except piano.....) so GH and rockband is a s close as i'll get

never been a fan of guitar hero and i kinda share this view, since in the time it takes to get the gist of guitar hero you could learn to play a song.
but yea really bad people to send a message like this - hell i didnt even class them as rock just really "that crap my sister listens to"

I think a bunch of other people have already made all the points I could think of, so...

I wonder how long it will be before Britney Spears tells people to stop playing Dance Dance Revolution because she's having trouble finding decent backup dancers?

And I want Nickelback to stop playing the watered-down, same 4-chords bullshit that they call music, but hey I'm not getting my wish any time soon, and neither are they.

It looks like a throwaway comment to me. Not something that he means in a negative way. More a "If you want the rock experience, do something positive about it rather than pretend"

Fuck you, Nickelback... just... just, fuck you!

It's not like playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band is taking the "easy path" to becoming a rock star or something. It's completely different, it's just a fun little game to play.

Rock band & real guitar playing? Surely there's time for both?

In anycase I would have thought that Nickelback's unlistenable filth would be more of a deterent to any who entertain the idea of picking up a guitar. I would hope that in most cases aspiring axe-slingers would rethink their musical ideas in a humane preventative effort that, unlike Chaoger and chums, not to learn to play an instrument would mean never finding themselves poluting people's ears in the future.

Nickelback suck massively - for all in this thread who have praised the Kroeger party, or even expressed 'on the fence views' shame on you - my pity in droves. Wanna hear good canadian music? Go buy some Neil Young.

Kroeger expressed concern over the shrinking number of bands in the rock and roll business. "I feel like there's not enough rock bands out there, especially when we go on the road," he said. "It's tough to find other bands out there, because either they're making a record, or they just got done touring."

Lol, or maybe nobody wants to tour with such a fucking awful band.

I have no interest in learning Guitar, and Guitar Hero is a fun game.

This. I tried picking up a guitar and found I had the coordination of an drunk, injured moose. I can play Guitar Hero (or Rock Band in my case) and enjoy it. I'd rather not be told what to and what not to play by anyone, least of all Nickelback.

I reckon you don't have the coordination of a drunk, injured moose.
I reckon everyone sucks when they first pick up a guitar, because it takes time to learn, so you wont sound amazing as you would on guitar hero. I'm all for playing guitar hero, but it's putting a lot of people of instruments 'cause its easier .

I think Chad is a talking hand trying to say something controversial to get attention.

This theory is completely retarded:

I didn't play Duck Hunt to get better weapons handling.

I didn't play NBA Jam to work on my jump shot.

I didn't play boxing on the wii to work on my right hook.

I don't listen to nickelback because they suck and so do their opinions.

Don't let celebrities think for you. Leave that to politicians and Fox news.

Word to you mother.

I think the lack of people wanting to form rock bands has got a lot more to do with the huge rise in people who want to be DJ's (including me). I know many people who love, or at least appreciate good rock music but have no interest in playing an instrument or singing because they've got hooked on the idea of becoming a DJ and playing electronic music instead.

Though that is in the UK, not in Canada. I don't think Nickelback tour much here.

It's probably much more realistic to play guitar hero than to spend years of your life playing guitar only to discover your not "Nikelback" enough to be in the industry.

This is like those crappy "PUNK" Green Day chaps.

Not enough Rock Bands!? There's too many Rock Bands and there always will be.

There are so many piss-poor bands that it's a good thing if more of the people who want to play guitar pick up a video-game instead of a real guitar. It'll hopefully stop them assuming people want to hear their unoriginal, boring and contrived music, thus saving us all from having to stand through wave after wave of bad support acts when we go to see our favourite acts.

Fruhstuck:
Time for some flaming

Fuck Off anyone who thinks Nickelback are shit. They're not. They're a brilliant band demonstrating some true skill with their instruments (given Chad Kroeger's voice can be annoying and a bit whiny but that's only 1 instrument out of 6 that's not that good and 5 out of 6 instruments that they play better than most of you). Their music might not appeal to you but that doesn't make them shit, that just means their music doesn't appeal to you. When you can play stuff of their level or above Then you can talk shit, untill then what do you base your argument that it's hit on? that you don't like it?
Ooooooh that's a solid argument :-|

Fanboy-Flame aside: i think it'd enrich a few more lives to learn to play guitar rather than guitar hero, but w/e floats your boat - if you're more into guitar hero than playing guitar you'll never be an amazing guitarist anyway as you won't have the drive for it

I'd just like to say that I'm 16 and I've been playing Guitar and Bass for about 6 years now, self-taught, and I actually significantly better than what Nickelback leads on to be; Nickelback sucks, but its okay if you like bad music.
