Behold The Dragon Quest Ballet

Videogames have provided inspiration for numerous spin-offs including movies, books and music, but none are quite so unique as The Dragon Quest Ballet.

Performed by the Star Dancers Ballet of Japan, the Dragon Quest ballet actually debuted all the way back in 1995, and has been performed annually ever since. In 2002 the group released a DVD of the performance, and the whole thing can also be seen online via YouTube, in 13 parts.

I don't actually know anything about the Dragon Quest games so how closely this performance actually follows the plot is beyond me; I don't know anything about opera, either, so whether or not this is any good isn't for me to say. Give it a watch and let me know.

Coming from someone with a lot of ballet experience, I LOVE this.

I love seeing ballet's with a modern twist. I recently saw a classical ballet done to live bluegrass music. It was amazing and this just makes me even happier.

You know, given how wonderful Dragon Quest music is, this makes perfect sense. So very, very awesome.

There's also a (or, rather, several), Bleach plays (musicals, whatever), complete with many Songs, duels, and no Ishida because he uses a Bow and arrows, and they can't safely recreate somone getting shot with an arrow on stage.

Now if someone can find clips of the Hitchhiker's Guide musical, I'm a happy man.

Dragon Quest ballet? So they repeat the same four dance steps over and over for 25-35 hours and every hour or two the orchestra plays the seven-note level-up chime?

Final Fantasy I can understand; I've seen amazing performances of Aria di Mezzo Carattere, only the greatest piece of video game music ever composed, with actual opera singers. Hell, you could probably do a pretty good piece of actual theater with that game's plot. But Dragon Quest? They should offer a free meat grinder with purchase of a ticket so you can grind at home!

Who says that nerds can't be cultured. To be honest I have to agree that this is kinda lost on me as I've never had the chance to play any Dragon Quest games (except a quick shot on that Slime thing on the DS but I not about to take that as definitive material =P ) but I guess there is some geekish pride in seeing a video game get a tie in to something as traditionally high brow as opera.
