Obama Urged To Protect Cyberspace

image

American officials are calling for President -elect Barack Obama to set up a governing body to legislate against the dangers of the internet.

We've already heard of Europol's Five Year Plan and Australia's Four Year Plan, now America looks likely to join the throng, as government advisors call for a "national office for cyberspace."

The report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies says that the Department of Homeland Security is unable to deal with the threat alone, so it's calling for a new White House Office, revised laws and government practices.

The report states "America's failure to protect cyberspace is one of the most urgent national security problems facing the new administration that will take office in January 2009. It is a battle fought mainly in the shadows. It is a battle we are losing."

"Dubya" Bush put the Department of Homeland Security in charge of tackling cyberspace, but it's admitted it's not up to the task.

There's also the problem that the Department of Homeland Security only applies to America itself, whilst the report shows that a large amount of cyber-terrorism comes from abroad.

Worryingly, one of Obama's earliest actions as president, the commission recommends, should be to make a statement declaring cyberspace a "vital national asset" that will be protected by "all instruments of national power".

You have to wonder who they're going to get to moderate the internet, though. Perhaps Al Gore, as he did invent the thing.

They better not start moderating morality on us.

i do believe he's appointed someone who is in favour of net neutrality as his cyber-czar or what ever they call them

he's got a long hard road ahead of him that's for sure, wish him well in his office

on a side note i think it's kinda funny they call certain offices a "czar" considering the history with Russia

It still weirds me out that people still use the term "Cyberspace".

Yeah, it sounds so 90's. I still hardly even know what it means, why don't the just call it the internet, or the web.

What else would they call him? the secretary of cyberspace affairs? But then how would you tell his achronism apart from such prestigious groups like; Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget, the Swedish foresting company. The Society for Creative Anachronism, An international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating pre-17th-century European history. or even the most prestigious of all; Sexual Compulsive Anonymous, does that one need an explanation?

As you can see the Cyber-Czar is the only appropriate name possible.

Well if they try to muscle in on china's territory they'll get a massive DoS attack in responce...this is china after all they can be mean. Plus if they do it with britain...well we'll just hack the pentagons servers...AGAIN.

There is also the many problems you will receive under censored internet. Such as the internet speeds being slowed detrimentally, waste of tax payers money and the ever increasing realization that the world is becoming closer to an authoritarian based government. A living and thinking being deserves free will and limitless boundaries (to a legal extent of course).

I don't see Obama making any significant move to censor the internet. Police it, maybe (i.e, stop identity theft, you know), but not censor. That said, I can see Dubya pushing a lame duck order to that effect through.

I don't understand how counties think they can censor the internet, its not really an entity that can be blocked and censored try as they might there is someone out there smarter than they are who can get around it.

And as an American, not to be disrespectful to those receiving aid from the government if you honestly need it but, I don't want anymore of my tax dollars being spent to pay for anymore ppl to sit on their ass and do nothing.

It sounds to me like they want to use the word "Police" instead of "Protect".

Cyberspace is the only true model of anarchism (or at least the closest to it). Personally I like the Internet the way it is. Despite all its flaws it has been a good lad to me.

QFT

but then it's still "cyber-crime" is still a bit of an issue and some measure must be put in place even if it is joust to give a fake sense of security to the masses.

(I don't get this whole cyber-terrorism thing the whole problem joust seams a bit over hyped)
