Home Censors Gay Words

image

Sony's harsh censorship in its online space has confused members of the gay community and anyone who wants to give a greeting as to why so many words are moderated.

When the public Playstation Home beta open on December 11, 18-year old gay gamer Michael Marsh logged into the virtual world to start a gay community group.

Marsh soon discovered that the words "gay", "lesbian" and "bisexual" were all blocked from the service's chat rooms and group names. Religious terms "Christ" and "Jew" were also censored. Even "hello" was flagged for containing "hell."

"I can understand if they're filtering out profanity, but I feel like it's discrimination," Marsh explained. "By blocking a word like 'gay,' which is a preferred term by the gay community, you're encouraging it as a bad word."

Home has had a number of user issues since its release. Less than a week after going public, hackers broke the system, allowing for anyone to nearly overhaul and infect anything in Home.

Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesman Patrick Seybold commented to the San Francisco Chronicle, "The key message is it's a beta and it's evolving on a daily basis. We've said early on that user behavior and feedback will shape where we go with Home."

Home's biggest problem isn't censorship, it's sucking.

Seriously, it's like they let an executive from the 80's design "virtual reality"

Oh! They just need to turn down the 'suck' (Reminds me of a 'Farside' comic I once read...)!

Seriously, I love how you can't say 'hello'. Awesome.

It's a good thing this is free.
Although the way things are going, it doesn't even seem it's worth that.

Fuck the freedom of speech, I can see it now...

Friend-"Oh, hi SirDan."
Me-"H**lo there."
Friend-"You can't say h**lo, this game is ***!"

It seems like they went a little over the top with the censoring. Not being able to say Hello is just bad programming.

The word 'retarded' is normally banned with those kinds of filters; somewhat ironically in this case.

In all fairness I can half see the reasons considering the rather 'colourful' language on XBL.

As a PS3 owner, Home can politely go **** itself because it's totally ***.

The "hello" thing reminds me of the Trackmania games, in which you can turn on a multilingual language filter that censors words like "computer" and "captain" as well as the phrase "put a" because they contain French swear words.

ya but thats not the fault of XBL because most of that happens over the mic and it would be next to imposible to remove that now.

Yeah, but you also mentioned that it censored words like "Christ" which by your logic would be promoting that as a bad word too. See? There is a silver lining to every Cloud ;-)

But seriously, censorship is my generations black death plague...

Everyone knows that 'gay' in the modern sense doesn't mean homosexual, it's a slang for for anything bad.

And if you've got a problem with that, well stop being so jew.

(OK, it's funnier when Simon Amstel says it)

instead of blaming Sony for the censorship (which i agree sucks) why not blame the jerks that run around yelling hateful crap? So Sony knows there are idiots out there and we all suffer for it. i hate it just as much as the next guy. but they did go way way to far with this. As far as that "freedom of speech" comment i saw up there. Remember that only applies to public arenas. Home is not a public arena. it's owned by Sony. therefor Sony has the right to do what they please. they want to kick you, you're kicked. they want to censor you. you're censored.

true. but it's either offend everyone or face the wrath of 1000 angry Christan mothers who walked in and saw their innocent child being cussed out. they Sony gets sued for some BS. home is down and then everyone really losses

Ahh this reminds me of an IRC channel I once visited (weak moment, don't ask).
Saying some words resulted in an instant kick. A lot of them made sense but some were just downright ridiculous.
For example: what if someone's name is "Dick" or when you want to talk about the "Homo Erectus"?

God forbid I call someone by their name or use scientific language on the internet.

See? This is where censorship gets you. People should be able to say whatever they want. I'm not going to go on an annoying rant here, but this is a little bit crazy. I mean, saying Jew is not allowed? So you're not allowed to tell anyone you're Jewish?

While I admit Home is a little strange I have found it fun. I've beaten people at chess, watched a few trailers and generally had a walk around. It seems unnecessary but it has potential. It's basically a gaming website with 3D avatars.

Buying stuff for your imaginary apartment is GAY. I mean that in the modern way. Not the mid-90s or pre 80's way.

No. Now that Home is on the system menu by default AND has a version number greater than 1.0 AND is (over)charging real money for virtual stuff, they no longer get to pretend it's in open beta.

There is no magic beta shield anymore. Home has been launched.

To be perfectly fair I doubt anybody would've minded if all the other epithets besides "gay" to refer to homosexuals were blocked. I mean on Live the choice of word for smacktards usually is "faggot" anyway (which is hilarious given that word initially not meaning anywhere near that)

Let's just face it, Sony's afraid to offend anybody after they spent so much time offending everybody, and they're still missing the point; nevermind the fact that Home is just pointless all on its own.

While I could care less about the BETA part of HOME, I still don't get why people are so angered by the fact that, "Hey! Our service is free, but to get the good stuff you have to pay up." It makes sense to me, how else are they going to get money off of it? And you can earn stuff in the arcade anyway, not to mention trophys will have rewards on their own.

On topic: Once again, everyone is heavily overreacting to what Sony do. "Gay" isn't a word that is used to describe someone who has an attraction to the same sex in the online world very much. Neither is "lesbian" or "bisexual". I thought we all knew what people say when they hate something, LIVE proves that.

The Gay community are overreacting to this, and while it makes sense that they want to call each other what they are (gay), it's common knowledge that little kids scream the words "GAY FAG LESBO GAY MOTHER-FUCKER!@#!@" alot.

Obviously, if they hadn't censored "Gay" someone would be offended and everyone would be all over their asses regardless.

Though I have no idea why "Christ" and "Jew" are censored, probably an attempt to not to offend" anyone, but those are stupid censors.

And last I checked, the "Hello" censor was fixed.

Yes because lawsuits against Microsoft for people misusing their chat clients are just piling up

Oh wait. Face it, Sony is trying to prove "look! civility! not at all like Live!" by replacing a bunch of words with asterixes(sic), and it isn't going to come off well at all. Because if there's one thing people dislike more than no censorship, it's crazy censorship. And I'm not saying that it wasn't a bad idea in theory, what I am saying is it will utlimately solve nothing and will not cause a decrease in people trying to use the words. But of course I forgot nobody acts like a "360 user" on the PSN. Nobody could possibly everrrrrr act that way. *eyeroll*

Well no duh, of course they don't want to make it look like "LIVE with more apartments!". When was the last time you heard someone use "gay" in it's actual term, "someone attracted to the same sex"? Wether it's "FAG" or "GAY" makes no difference to trolls or spammers, either way they want to say "YOU SUCK".

I never said that, infact I completely reject that statement and anyone who says that or anything similar to that. There are retards everywhere, some more prominent than others. Nobody is safe, not LIVE not PSN not the Escapist not in real life. The problem is weeding out the really stupid ones.

I remember a filter that blocked "downstairs" and "Thailand."
